Concerning the Avid timeline, I actually think it looks pretty clean, and organized, granted the audio is an issue. I think organizing Audio on the timeline is going to be the next big breakthrough that the Final Cut Team is going to tackle. For example here is just a :30 spot, with compound clips for most of all the video, but as you can see the audio is out of control:

Intrigued to see the results, Alex.

It may be that there's little need to update the core FCPX within iMovie unless there are foundational changes, such as in 10.1's library model. If there are features with 10.1.2, they may not in any way impact the more limited functionality of iMovie.

I'm sure somebody mentioned this before, but color labels would be a great help in these situations.

Highlighting Roles could help, couldn't it ?

I might have had some random thoughts on the subject :)

This is such an elegant and well laid out solution to the inevitable messiness of the fcpx audio timeline. Thank you.

Even that layout is half the tracks and expanded so looks worse than it is. ;) .
I know that if I was editing this job in FCPX that 24 track timeline would be no more than 6! 1 Multicam clip containing 14 discreet mics, 2 tracks of music, 2 tracks of FX and 1 extra. Even better I could label each discreet track with the name of which person it was, and view their waveforms without having to wait for 5 minutes while the timeline redraws.

AVID really does feel like a Stone Age product next to FCPX. I reckon I'm nearly 50% slower using it. So it's costing my client some serious dosh.

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point there wasn't 'some' integration of the "Track Stacks" feature in Logic ProX:

The example of Stack Tracks is one of the possible implementations that Role Organization could take. Being able to collapse/expand a role, much like Audio Components, would clean-up and organize project timelines, without giving up individual clip connections to the Primary Storyline clips.

Alex4D has followed up on his post yesterday and found some hints at possible feature in the next version of FCP X.

Integrated LUTs and improved XML import/export at the most intriguing ones here.

I would love to see more control over secondary story lines. As an example being able to set in and outs without the range and skimmer tool.

From Larry Jordan's weekly newsletter this morning:

"Later this month, I have some very interesting product reviews - so June looks to be pretty exciting on the new product front."

Could be hardware but maybe a hint at FCPX 10.1.2?????

Here's an interesting note I got from a post I put up on the REDUSER forums- inquiring on who's update we're waiting for for improved FCP X RED GPU acceleration-

Apple will need to update FCPX with the latest R3D SDK. So probably in their next update to FCPX... Whenever that happens... For now I hope that they hold off a bit because we'll need an updated SDK from RED to address the Dragon colorful noise issue and it seems that is real close to being pushed out the door. Premiere, Resolve, etc.. will also need to update to gain those benefits.

So hopefully that's on the list for 10.1.2 for those nutters like me cutting in RED RAW.

Would be interesting to see if Mavericks 10.9.4 (which should be out soon, maybe tomorrow) actually helps that along or if we have to wait for Yosemite.

This isn't an OS issue. It's the RED SDK within FCP X that determines what control we have over RED footage (in the Red Raw Modification setting HUD), and what CPU/GPU assets can be leveraged.

Up until recently, you needed a RED ROCKET card to leverage GPU power for RED debayering/transcoding. Last Fall at IBI, RED announced that they would begin to support 3rd party GPUs.

Earlier this year, Davinci Resolve was updated with the new SDK, and RED performance skyrocketed. Premier Pro support was announced at NAB and released with last week's update.

This is just something X developers need to implement.

Darrin Roark said in another thread that he though this would be RED's job to implement in the APPLE WORKFLOW tool. But it seems this is a RED SDK issue, and it just hasn't been implemented yet on Apple's side- cause FCP X hasn't been updated since the SDK was presumably available early this year.

I have a gut feeling that we'll see an update very soon and not just a bug fix, but a real feature update release.

As with Neat Video, you can tweak the GPU render settings inside the plugin GUI that opens, yet FCP X is doing the rendering technically. So if Neat can implement it's own handling of the GPU resources within FCP X, it doesn't make sense that updates to the Red software would require additional updates to FCP X to allow that.

My understanding (and I'm not a programmer full disclosure) when I was demoing Red workflow at their booth at NAB the Red folks said they were working on FCP X having the same performance as PP and Resolve and hoped to have it out soon.

I think the next update will be FCPX 10.2, have loads of new features, and be a paid upgrade.
