With all the stuff about camera features, they made no mention about the iPhone 7 (especially the Plus) video capabilities. That, to me, was the most unfortunate thing about the event. Given the specs it could certainly be a useful utility video camera.

The video specs are now listed on Apple site.
4K stays at 30fps, not 60 as some speculated.
The "normal" lens improves to f/1.8 while the "tele" is f/2.8 in the iPhone 7+.
I expect better low light performance.
Image stabilization for both 7 and 7+
Color gamut improvements.
Faster processor and increased ram, just in time, but if you plan on 4K plan on going with 128 or 256 versions. Jet Black only available with higher ram.
Overall some nice improvements. Not going to replace anyones Red Epic, but might give some action cams a run. Water resistance helps in that regard as well as video stabilization. Nice to hide B-roll camera for close up scenes.
Sure we will see lots of videos "Made on iPhone7(7+)"
Wonder what camera APIs will allow in terms of using 2 lens technology. Could offer some cool 3rd party apps/modifications.

As an aside, Apple released developer Golden Masters for all OSs today. Public releases soon. Apple calling for App Store submissions for new OSs.

FCPX 10.3 release Oct 12  :silly:

Hope this helps, Greg

...the expected keynote is over and still no news.

It is very sad that there is a whole community of professionals waiting for news about an fcpx update or new MacPros... and we are with an event in which only talking about phones and watches. I'd say it's a shame.

We all agree that FCPX is a tool with incredible potential (all except apple) and also will agree that is still unpolished all. but they did not seem to care even half as we .... It makes me sad.

I'm already seeing what will happen in the next update: Minimum bugs fixed, and see you later.

in recent months Avid has been updated more times than the final cut. are we crazy?

It's great to know when everything is going to be released...

... except FCPX.

FCPX must absolutely be their most valuable commodity because it's the one thing they keep secret.
Perhaps Adobe will completely rethink what they've just announced when the next FCPX update is release (sarcasm).

Everyone knows there is a major update coming in the fall. The FCP X team have their own roadmap, and this has nothing to do with what any other company announces or not. I prefer unexpected updates that truly improve our workflows, and no marketing hype.

Was there ever a Keynote from Apple where Final Cut Pro X was ever mentioned?
Also I do recall the Mac Pro line was announced and presented during the October timeframe.

Maybe, just maybe the keynote that was watched yesterday is for a different audience?
I mean macOS had also on air time.

Well when you think about how they started the key note, with Mario! then you understand, its all about consumers and large markets. The developers and pros are mentioned but a keynote media event is more geared towards the large populous of consumers.....

FCPX is great...and I'm sure will be updated..... I'm just upset that we can't make a new topic called waiting on 10.4 or 11? I just wanted to start a new thread....

I'm also thinking that FCP11 is due. We've been on 10 for a long time now:

FCP 5.1 - March 2006.
FCP 6 - April 2007.
FCP 7 - July 2009.
FCP X - June 2011
FCP XI - October 2016 ?

It took two years to go from 6 to 7 and the same again to go from 7 to 10. We've been on 10 for what, 5 years now?
( Mind you we've been on OSX for 14 years or something and it seems to be Apples favourite number, something they seem very attached to )
I think It would do the brand good to shake off the X stigma that still reverberates through the industry from the botched FCPX launch to this very day.

I didn't expect anything about Mac Pro Or FCPX yesterday.

It did surprise me that there was no mention of the iPhones video camera capability though.

Mac Pro was peeked at at WWDC, months before it was released. But that was most likely due to its impact on software development for it.

At this point I don't think they need to do "marketing hype" regarding FCPX. Just a professional courtesy.
There may be some who see Adobe's update and may move their workflow towards it. This is more "market" than marketing. People make long term decisions based on what software will give them workflow solutions for upcoming projects.

Being secretive is a marketing decision and I don't see any value in it at this point. I don't think they gain or retain users with it. I don't think it steers competitor's decisions at this point. I don't think they are protecting against unfinalized development decisions that would disappointment users if not fulfilled at this point.

Sorry if I'm slightly off topic.
Just read an article at BuzzFeed about the elimination of the TRRS phone jack/port, something I totally support because it is crappy from mechanical/electrical/data perspective. Personally I think Apple should replace the Lighting port with USB-C, better, more capable and roughly same size, be more Apple and universally ubiquitous.

The article is well worth the read.
www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkowski/inside-i...Nn7XGjNZ#.nk5eqMpDaG

In the article is some description of the video in the new iPhone7(+). Like these quotes…
“End-to-end these camera systems are a massive jump in capability over the ones in the 6s,” Schiller says…"
And this… “The new iPhones are crazy powerful,” says Neill Barham, founder and CEO of Filmic, a highly regarded mobile video app for iOS. He’s effusive in his praise, saying Apple’s new A10 chip has brought a “seismic” improvement in video processing to the iPhone. He jokes that Stanley Kubrick probably would have loved the 7 Plus, though he concedes he probably wouldn’t have shot Barry Lyndon with it.
“In layman’s terms, the prior 6S/+ is like a sprinter: it can do a lot of work in a short amount of time,” Barham offers. “The 7, on the other hand, is more like a marathon runner, or better yet, a triathlete that can perform multiple processor intensive loads all day long.”
Anyway just thought I pass this along. Sorry if OT

Hope this helps, Greg

… imagine, Apple would bake its very own 'V1' GPU for Macs …

Companies like Nvida improve their cards every year by more transistors, smaller transistors, more pipelines, faster pipelines etc. But respecting 'old' industry standards like PCI, voltage, size ......

What, if you're allowed to develop a GPU from the ground… ignoring 'the obsolete' …

Phil said what? Courage.
Axe old, think different.

Just to remind everyone, what did it take to release Final Cut Pro X??

Courage, to ditch the trusted tracks, and go boldly into a new concept, ok the launch version tanked badly, but really no one can say it was a total loss, 10.2.3 is a wonderful version...

With the addition of a reliable, roles based audio mixer, OMG, that would be great...

Final Cut Pro X is totally all about courage..

I forgot, courage to allow apps to be developed by 3rd parties, that was a huge bold courageous decision, and FCPX would be frankly shitty if Apple did all the plug-ins inhouse!!

I don't have any secret knowledge, I just read a lot.

Shallow DOF
I don't think the depth of field effect (when released) will be for video. Everything they focused on yesterday was for photography. While it would be great to see it for video too (and down the road I'm sure we will), this feature when released will reside in a new Portrait mode—similar to Square and Pano. Unless they want to really surprise us, it looks like it's just for photos.

For video features, I think they did all that last year with 4K. Nothing really new except for low-light performance. Perhaps it's up to 3rd party apps to add more there. For the 7 Plus, would it be possible to shoot video from both cameras at once? Apple's trademark documents present that idea.

Mac Pro
I've been seeing a lot this week about the Mac Pro and perhaps an effort to move away from it (from Apple). Reports today talk about the help documents being archived. BUT, people have already forgotten that a new Mac Pro is already referenced in El Capitan and Sierra. I think that just like the Macbook Pro's and iMac's have been held back by Intel, the Mac Pro is in the same tough spot. And until they have Arm-based chips to move to, they are stuck with Intel. (I do think they have a roadmap to Arm just like they did from PowerPC to Intel).

FCPX
We will get a new version soon. Sooner now than from NAB this year. Things point to October (and people are dropping hints that's the case). I'm calling it 10.3 and I don't think Apple will jump to 11. They always stay at 10 anyways. Can something even be taken to 11? (Spinal Tap Joke Success)

The most exciting piece from yesterday to me: iWork. If that doesn't excite you about potential workflow with FCPX, I don't know what will.

Even just a mention that the 2x zoom from the 7 Plus works for video as well would have been nice.

If you look at which documents are getting archived from the Mac Pro there's mostly no surprises as one would expect new port configuration and another makes references to OS 10.9.2.

The interesting thing is the document regarding laying the Mac Pro on its side. My guess that archival would mean either differences in cooling or perhaps a change in the form. Even if minor it would require a new article.

Hi Dave
I agree that iWork simultaneous multiple editors is very interesting. Using iWorks myself, just for me that becomes interesting. Take to say logging on set, sub titles, etc… makes it even more important. Apple hasn't said AFAIK if this requires update to iWork apps and Sierra to become available, but I think so.

Sierra contains lots of additional frameworks that allow specific video enhancements, like being able to split video libraries into multiple parts and storage locations. AV Foundation contains lots of new abilities.
Maybe we will see FCPX10.3 (Sierra based) allow multiple editors do collaborative simultaneous editing on video, while say sound is sent off to sound editor, hopefully all new Audio abilities in FCPX. We'll see.
There are many other underlying aspects to Sierra which makes me excited. I think this is why we haven't seen 10.3 yet, but soon my friend, soon.

I really expect Motion to be totally rewritten too. A person can dream, right? Personally I hope they totally change the UI in MotionX. Currently it is too cluttered, confusing with features stuck all over the place. Shades of older models. I think we will see whole new 3D abilities. If we see it here, it will be in FCPX.

I think you will be able to select which lens is used for video. I also think that using both lenses for video will also happen. What would be cool is the ability to change focus in post. Imagine being able to rack focus and zoom in a clip in FCPX B)

When Apple moves to the new Apple File System (APFS) then I think we will see some truly amazing changes including much more robust and secure data and near instantaneous updates for all changes and constant versioning.

Happy Editing, Greg
