Disappointed because it means I'll likely be buying at least one existing Thunderbolt display that I'll probably have to replace next year. Not disappointed because the prospect of a $3,500 display on top of probably an $8,000 computer was a tad unnerving.

This. But an Apple 4k display is going to be the $#@^...

Good news is you can pick up 2 27" Thunderbolt displays for $1,600 if you're willing to go refurbished. I've had no problems in the past buying Apple certified refurb, so I think that's what I'll probably do.
I can always sell them later.

We could get more exact info later this month if Apple decided to do pre-orders for the new MacPro a week before whatever release date they have in mind. The MacPro production video would certainly seem to indicate that they're stockpiling inventory so they they don't have the horrible order-backlog they did with the iMac last December.
One other tangental FCPX point. I've been promising my parents my first-generation iPadMini- and now that they're out I've had the itch to head to the Apple store. But I guess I first wanted to wait and see if 10.1 does come with it's own iPad companion app (like LogicProX). If it does, then the iPadAir would seem to be the better bet with it's larger screen. Otherwise, I've been very happy with the iPadMini form factor and would be happy to upgrade to this year's Retina version.

Oh man, I had to show real willpower not to buy one yesterday after checking out the air at the apple store yesterday, and I have a 3rd gen ipad. I can't imagine they won't come out with a companion app for X, I'm surprised they haven't already.

As I and many others have debated, the real target for an iPad control surface would be for doing those tasks which other hardware control surfaces are already filling. Not just a new way to activate a command key, but for tasks like colour correction and audio mixing. Those are the two roles I'd really like to see Apple fill with an iPad companion app. A touch surface for the colour board would be great, and should 10.1 get improved audio mixing tools, virtual sliders would be great there as well.
My biggest hopes for 10.1, aside from the wish for further speed increases, would be a deeper colour grading solution.
Bringing more of what Apple's EOL'd "Color" offered, right inside of FCPX.
If they brought customisable interfaces to 10.1 too, that could open up a whole new world of opportunities. Hitting a key command to change between a standard editing interface, and a full on grading interface, and then a mixing interface, and back again.
Really hope we get some more control over the interface

I'd say the Event/Project restructuring is a done deal. Just about everything Alex lists here would be good news.

As Alex says, ALL of this stuff is probably not going to make it into 10.1, but the prospects are exciting.

Took the words out of my mouth.
A couple of big ones for me would be ability to store everything in a single entity (an event) instead of the silly splitting in to different folders….. combined with the ability to actually use projects/events stored in any folder, anywhere, rather than in the root. Now add the possibility of multiple editors accessing the same folder / event at the same time and yeeha!
Just don't break anything.…. like neat video plugins etc….. PLEASE!
Right now you can access your Aperture/iPhone library in different apps. So maybe the same will be true of the new FCP.
I'm personally looking forward to having a Library for each client. If I can share a Library over my network. Wow!
It looks like the future does point to a situation where an editor could setup different libraries with projects and events for different clients. I see FCPX round tripping to iMovie and used by producers and directors to mark changes in an edit.
Thank you Alex for doing the undercover work.

Using iMovie/iPad on set, an editors assistant and/or director could set up a rough cut and/or a fully key word organised Event before being opened in FCPX for editing.
I have to think that that rough cutting in iMovie and opening in FCPX will be very smooth.

it is!
What's gladly forgotten:
you could, years ago, implant code-particles from FC/p or FC/e into iM06 to taught it new tricks.
And iM08 demoed the new concept (Projects/Events, skimmer, etc) a year ahead (!) of FCPX.-
imho, iM13 is a smart way to 'test' some innards of forthcoming pro tool.
better the 14$-customer complains, than the Hollywood production.
… still missing evidence for '3D'/my 'return of the chrome title!' prognosis ...

I got thinking, this could (still not as a cheap client option) this could bring editors at lower budgets who want to get on set make it an affordable option in areas that budgets don't cover for it otherwise.
Setting things up on set in iMovie and editing at base with FCPX.
Part 3 in the series covers plugins, Motion, scripting and a possible new member of the Pro Apps family.
