Yeah, but it is kind of funny that this article is the only one that doesn't have a gear list in it. All the other in-action articles have a gear list.

Hi
I have a question - maybe naive :-)

Do you like buy at the moment FCP X 10.0.9 to version 10.1 (11) will be a free upgrade?
As far as I can remember so far was probably with Aperture ...
Will there be a new version for which you will have to pay?

Important question because for five days I run out of trial :) and after several previous attempts at last major job I want another edited on FCP X and filming for the next job will be start next weekend...
But as I have about a month back more than 200 euros to spend on the next version of FCP X is an order to mount the AVID :cheer:

In the past Apple has always had a very decent policy for people who had purchased software right before a new paid update was released. You could get a free switch to the new version if you could prove that you had made the purchase of the older version less than one month before the new version became available. So I guess (but of course no-one knows for sure) they will maintain this policy with the release of the new FCPX.

Personally, I'd wait before purchasing if I could. I'd maybe even start a project in iMovie'13 with plans to move to FCPX 10.1 when it arrives – just in case they do charge for upgrades.

That said, my hunch is that 10.1 will indeed be a free update. Wishful thinking, quite likely, but also based on what just happened with Aperture, iWork and the iLife apps. Heck, I believe you could get those updates even if you had just the trial versions installed – Apple seems to want all of us on the latest and greatest of everything, and I don't immediately see why FCPX should be different.

We'll know soon enough.

I still believe FCPX 10.1 will be free. Look at what they did with Mavericks.

Cost to develop OSX is higher than FCP (I believe). If they managed to give away Mavericks why not FCPX 10.1? That will shut up many more people who're still critical at FCPX

Well Logic Pro X isn't for free so I doubt we will get a free Version. For the update who knows. I would like to say it will be standard update... but if not I think update will follow the OS standard be somewhat cheap.

I think people are in error conflating what Apple is doing with it's OS and consumer offerings with Pro apps.

It's two distinct and different groups.

On the one side Apple is selling an experience of "ease of use" to average users. No paid system updates and solutions for basic computing tasks come right with the machine.

On the other, Apple is selling specialized software to users.

I believe that as long as there is a "consumer" and "Pro" version of an app (Garageband/Logic), Apple will continue to charge for the Pro experience.

The only way that Apple will not charge for 10.1 is-

if THEY don't consider it a major enough update to warrant the charge.

if they do it as a concession this time to appeal to users, and get FCP7 users to give it another look.

I don't put much stock in either of those ideas.

Note that iWorks for iOS wasn't initially free either but became free retroactively. It's possible that Apple is transitioning. Note that iWorks free for device purchases but not really enforced as demos can be updated.

Of course the ProApps are on a different battlefield but I wouldn't be surprised if Apple may do a rethink on this.

I'd just like to note here that Aperture's update was not a full, new release, but a point update to 3.5. I believe schiller said, like Final Cut, a new version for the Mac Pro would also be on the way.

True... but wasn't Mavericks more target for the pro users then for the consumer?

It was only targeted at Pro users more in as much as it offered more pro features than in the last couple of updates. But there was way more on the power/performance efficiency side- which an everybody feature. Plus there were lots of features for consumers like iBooks, Maps, iCloud Keychain...

Apple's only selling one OS, so it's all part of the package.

I would suggest that the only reason Mavericks was free was because Apple release a load of new software that only works in Mavericks. I wouldn't mind betting that 10.1 requires Mavericks, which is going to cause me some issues because some of the drivers I have for LTO etc don't yet work on Mavericks, or they are wanting some crazy number to upgrade.

Dave, Apple has gone on record say that all OS updates for Mac for the foreseeable future will be free.

I'm also fairly convinced that 10.1 will require Mavericks.

No, I wouldn't believe either of those reasons either. But I might go with option 3: they don't have a mechanism for charging for updates in the App Store. Rolling out a whole new app (and keeping the current version around for those who don't wish to pay again) wouldn't be an elegant solution: they're not going to have 'FCPX 10.0.0' and 'FCPX 10.1' alongside each other in the Store, surely?

I fully expect Apple to continue charging for FCPX, but my hunch/hope is they'll deploy it as an update to the existing package. Which would suggest no update fee.

As for the Logic Pro X example: that was the first release of Logic available via the App Store, yes? If so, it's the next major version that's significant, and that hasn't happened yet.

Hi JJ.,

Logic Pro 9 was the first version to appear in the Mac App Store (after it used to be only on disc).

When Logic X came out, it was a new app, and Logic Pro 9 disappeared from the store for new customers to buy, although (I don't know because X was the first I bought trough the app store) I recall people who bought 9 trough the App Store saying that it was still in their purchases menu, and they could re-download from there.

That's why a lot of people think it could be the same scenario with FCPX 10.1.

Yeah, Logic 9 is still available in my purchase history. I don't think the cost to keep those apps available in the store are that big of a deal to Apple.

I actually hope they make the next version of FCPX a paid upgrade and keep the price at $299. If it's a paid update then it's going to need to be a major update to justify the cost. If it costs less than $299 then it will be even tougher to sell as professional. At this point "professional" perception is a big part of what needs to happen with the next version. It would be great if they would do some sort of keynote showing it off, even if it's just on their campus and added to Apple TV.

Ah, interesting. I didn't realise Logic 9 had been sold as a download, thanks for correcting me. Aperture's the only pro app still in that situation, then, where the current version (3.x) was sold as a physical disc and is now in the App Store?

It wouldn't surprise me to see a revamped Aperture appear as a fresh purchase, under the 'Aperture X' branding. However, I don't think we have a precedent for a major upgrade to a pro app that's only ever been sold in the App Store. My hunch remains that 10.1 won't be charged, but I guess none of us know. Heck, it's possible the decision hasn't even been made yet. :)

As a side note - I caught up with a filmmaker friend yesterday and asked him what he used to edit with. He said FCP still as FCPX is like 'a babies toy' and how he was waiting on 10.1 as that will be the pro version.

I certainly get that impression a lot from people, but don't understand the thinking? While 10.1 may be a major update it's not going to change the game? If you didn't like FCPX before I don't see how you could suddenly take to a newer version? It's not like Apple will be like - timelines are back - you didn't really think we were serious about magnetic clips did you?
