FCPX 10.1.0 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION

It's kind of ironic that after fending off all the name calling of fcpx as "iMovie Pro", my impatience for the next release is calmed by iMovie.

It really does solve many mysteries as to what changes the next version of X will (likely) have.

Being able to open and close different projects, single folders for said projects, etc.

It's a sign of good things to come.

This looks like the new FCPX. No Project Library button in the timeline.
No rounded corners anymore.

Aside from that, it doesn't look that different.

Interesting that the monitor is Sharp and not an Apple Cinema Display of some sort. So is Sharp making 4K Thunderbolt monitors?

If I'm not mistaken, I think they make a HDMI/Displayport 32" 4K monitor.

Would love for Apple to bring out a 4K Thunderbolt Monitor.
They need an update anyway (still on USB2...)

I dont think this is the new UI of FCPX 10.1. It's just in a much higher resolution on screen so you cant really see the rounded corners.

Apple will definitely not release screenshots of the UI prior release.

It happened before. Magic Bullet released a screenshot of the then upcoming 10.0.6 release. It then had a different icon for the inspector, and the new Share button.

BTW, if it's not the new UI, where is the button gone in the timeline next to the timeline index button, which you use to go to your project library?

Hmmm.....

Oh I didn't saw that in your screenshot.
I just saw it now on Apples website.

Strange.

I agree that the seemingly sharper corners could simply be product of the interface on the higher resolution display; since the UI is being expanded vs just blown up on the higher resolution.

The missing timeline index button is curious.

But I'm really hoping we see more of a change to the timeline. Not tracks- but better organization.

I have been trying to find this online but you probably know Alex, will we need thunderbolt 2 cables? According to the diagram on that link it looks like it combines two of the 10Gbps lanes into one 20Gbps lane.

I'm hoping my failure to find anyone announcing Thunderbolt 2 cables is a good sign. I have a downpayment on a house invested in the cables i have!

I played around with iMovie last night and it seems like it's based on FCP X. If the changes in iMovie are evidence of what's to come in FCPX then that screenshot is probably the updated UI. It shares the sharp corners, no clutter.

iWork is even following the flatter look along with the tools you need popping up depending on what you are doing. I bet that is what will happen in X too.

The main thing about iMovie is it seems like you can open and close individual projects, and the events and projects are no longer separate.

Lastly, does this sound familiar? discussions.apple.com/message/23470349#23470349

That's proof enough for me that iMovie is the best preview we were given yesterday for what is coming in X.

Thunderbolt cables stay the same.

Thunderbolt has always had four channels of communication - two in each direction. The Thunderbolt 2 I/O system's Channel Bonding combines two channels in each direction into one using software.

Thunderbolt 2 is electrically equivalent to Thunderbolt 2. The difference is what signals are being sent down the wires - that is determined by what Intel's chips at either end of the wire know how to do.

From what I can tell looking at the acknowledgements and features of iMovie and Garageband, iMovie 10 IS a stripped down version of the future version of Final Cut Pro X, and GarageBand is a stopped down version of the current version of Logic Pro X.

Check out the contents of the packages of iMovie 10 and FCPX. It's the same.

Based on this, some things to look forward to in FCP 10.1

- Used Media Marked Ranges
- No more separate "projects". Projects will reside in the Event databases.
- Greatly improved performance (scrolling filmstrips for example)
- Rethought UI - Flatter, less depth on timeline.
- Much better Motion Template performance (iMovie 10 is monumentally faster editing titles than current FCPX)
- Will probably require 10.9

From my perspective, this is a great encouragement and acknowledgement that Apple is continuing to innovate. Seeing what worked with the current FCPX and adjusting it to be a more efficient system.

Can't wait!

Very interesting. I too can't wait what the next FCP will bring out :woohoo:

Also, with Mavericks being free I still have some hope the next FCP update will be free :P

Playing with new iMovie. I find it great that in new iMovie you can actually add music track that is not anchored to main storyline. Hopefully we'll see these kind of independent storylines/tracks also in next FCPX.

I stand corrected, projects seem to have their own separate database from events.

Below I created a "project" called Example Timeline. Notice it has it's own database in a folder, that resides inside the event, which is inside the library.

I also notice that cutaway/connected clips in the new imovie get fade/opacity ramps

The real ironic thing is that people are now bitching about FCPX's ability to handle all that 4K. "Who uses 4K?" "What's the point in 4K" "no professionals I know use 4K"

It's not pro, it's too pro... Jesus Christ, really?

Who is complaining? I use 4K footage all the time if the time lets me. ;)

Yeah exactly, I have no fond memories of the roundtrip to Color while using 1080p Red proxies. The directors all knew you could get away with reframing shots so it was no fun having to redo all the repos by hand later.

But that was using 4K five years ago. I can't even begin to think about how much time I could have saved if X was around. It's a mouse click to switch from proxies to originals.

iMovie feels crazy fast to me. I have a good feeling.
