FCPX 10.1.0 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION
I'm not ordering only for FCP X editing, I consider what I'm ordering beyond what FCP X would actually benifit from. Seriously, I currently have 16 GB RAM, and I've never filled up all of that, ever. But, folks do notice more RAM than 8 helps system performance. I've never seen FCP or Motion use up all of my CPUs, or even come close, ever. All that on a 2008 Mac Pro.
I do 3D modeling and very heavy special effects compositing, too. So, I pushed it. I checked and my app developers for my heavy hitting apps said they would be going dual GPU support on the Mac Pro soon (and Mac Pro only).
8 core, 32 RAM, 1 TB flash, D700 6GB, Apple Care (a must for anyone making a living off of this hardware).
Does not come with any keyboard or mouse. Keeping my Magic Trackpad, but need a new Apple full sized keyboard. The one I have is so used, NONE of they keys are visible. Fortunately I can type well enough to not ever look down at it at all. Hate the "min" wireless keyboards. Hate color codes on my keys. I know what key is what, don't need colors to babify me.
Was told that packaging is very minimal. Does come with "Thunderbolt cables" (no clue what that could mean; 1, 2, 3?). Comes with a "Memory Kit". No clue what that is either. Maybe a kit to install slower, older RAM? The native RAM it takes is very specific and unique, but not proprietary. Just not widely used, yet. I don't suspect OWC or Crucial to have third party available for a month or two. They'll need to do enough QA testing first, IMHO. And not sure they'll be much cheaper, considering the actual tech specs, and Apple's pricing.
Also getting Pegasus2 Diskless, and using the four 4TB drives in my current 2008 MP to populate it. Local Apple business rep verified with Promise that it has no drive size limit they are aware of (some do for heat fan and controller board through-put reasons).
And I'm up to just over $8K on the purchase.

Yup Aussies and Canuks are kindred spirits. Small population on big land. Like a drink or three.
Don't take things too seriously.
See I'm doing my bit to get this topic above 2K before launch!
I would also like to hear what Ben has chosen and his rational.
I'm still thinking six core with upgraded graphics, though the way the Aussie dollar is falling it might end up being a MacMini!

I like your config, 1TB on the start is more than I would need, but thats because I'm used to my macbook air with 128. My hakintosh also has 128. For me I think the stock 256 would be fine, but the PCIe speeds would be tempting to use as a small scratch drive maybe on a second partition.
I think your Pegasus Diskless is a good migration path. Thanks for sharing!

The spread isn't as wide as it used to be- I'll probably just get the RAM from Apple.
I currently have a 2TB system drive, and it was over 3/4 full two weeks ago. Logic plugin (Native Instruments and such) add-ons, Aperture library, iTunes library, etc, etc. Just huge. But I've worked very hard on trimming it down and moving things to a 6TB USB 3.0 RAID in preparation. Have to REALLY figure out how to have a system drive that is only a tiny 1TB large. Geez, do y'all not have your whole album collection from 1960 to 2013 in your iTunes library? And every photo you ever took since then in an Aperture, too? Yep, having to move lots of stuff to external storage, and configure the apps for it. My personal demonic dilemma. Help me Ozzy, you're my only hope!
$475 vs $470? I'll go with the Apple RAM. I think you'll have to replace everything in the MP to do the upgrade. I could be wrong.

I'm also going to start the machine clean, and NOT install FCP7 on it. I haven't had to open Legacy in about 6 months, and those jobs are just getting farther and farther in the rear view window...
Never looked back.

Also I am beginning to think the 10.1 update will be free. mainly from a comment about iMovie compatibility. The new iMovie will not work with the current fcpx. If iMovie is supposed to be a quick cut solution, then the interface should probably be backwards compatible a bit if there was going to be a difference between a paid upgrade or not. Since they are targeting 10.1, they must expect a quick upgrade to 10.1. free is easy to make quick.
