FCPX 10.1.0 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION

I was kidding about the 4-6 weeks.

I was making a point that even though this version of Final Cut Pro is supposedly improved to make the most of the Mac Pro, if users only get their Mac Pros in 4-6 weeks, in theory we might have to wait that long for 10.1.0.0.

I guess they've made the demo Mac Pros for the Apple Stores around the world. Users who don't customise might get their orders in a few days. Business days that is: If Apple's shut down is from Tuesday 24th to January 1st, then 3 business days from Friday onwards means kit shipping on Jan 2...

Another problem is that clearly the new iMovie is designed as the stepping stone to FCP, while the current version of FCP does not support the new version of iMovie at all. This would behoove Apple to get the updated FCP out sooner rather than later. Already seeing complaints about the two apps not working together.

Almost 10:15am here (Pacific Time), I say give it at least 4 more hours to show up in the app store. Most likely tomorrow though.

That's way too clear. It must be more complicated than that! :)

Dual GPU raises an interesting question. Some Macs have two graphics processors, an integrated processor as well as a separate graphics card. Will the update support this I wonder as dual graphics? Would this effect what energy setting you use for automatic graphics switching?

I'm not sure the mobile GPUs you're talking about have the power to be used the same way as these ones. I could be wrong though. It will be interesting to see what overall performance improvements we get on existing hardware, not just the beastly MacPro.

Tom,

iMovie 10.0 (which shares a core with Final Cut Pro X) has new elements that reflect modern Mac configurations:

* HOpticalFlowAnalyzer2, oflow v2, use display GPU only
* HOpticalFlowAnalyzer2, oflow v2, use aux GPU only
* HOpticalFlowAnalyzer2, oflow v2, use CPU only
* HOpticalFlowAnalyzer2, oflow v1, use display GPU only
* HOpticalFlowAnalyzer2, oflow v1, use aux GPU only
* HOpticalFlowAnalyzer2, oflow v1, use CPU only

I'll do a little more digging…

Nice find. I wonder what the v1 and v2 mean?

The Apple press release on Mac Pro isn't available in most countries.

I tried all the following, and only found the press release on three Apple websites:

USA
Canada

Latin America
Brazil

Australia

United Arab Emirates
Qatar

Denmark
France
Germany
Ireland
Italy
UK

I think its interesting to define one of the Gfx cards as an auxilary GPU. From what I saw of the firepros, one of hem can drive 3 4k displays, so even then you have a full GPU dedicated for openCL tasks. B)

It seems likely that in the MacPro- one GPU is entirely dedicated to graphics rendering. The second's primary task is the displays, but unless you're maxing that out with the 3X 4K screens, there's probably some horsepower left over- Most people will likely have a GPU and a half to throw at rendering.

Hmmm... I want that problem. Oh I have too many 4k displays on my crazy fast computer.

I'm just trying to figure out what to do about displays for now. With no 4K option from Apple, I need to find a standby. I've missed having 2 displays, so maybe 1 or 2 Thunderbolt ACDs from the Apple refurb store: $1,600.
