I too doubt they will be wasting resources on squashing bugs in 10.0.8 if there is a whole new version coming out in the next few months. I for one would be angry to find out they were! ;)

I suspect the release of the New MacPro will coincide with not just the release of FCPX but also ApertureX and maybe something new.

That way they'll really be able to "show off" just how much performance you can get out of software optimised for a dedicated piece of hardware.

FCP X is already a jet, I can't imagine what it's going to be capable of on this new bit of kit.
Probably never render again!

the new version announcement at WWDC seemed a bit premature figuring it would be a few months before it's released. who would spend $300 now just to spend $300 again a couple months later. reckon they were never too concerned about possibly killing sales in the interim.

I'm still confused by the "new version" announcement. Are we just basing this off of the keynote? Or was something else said at WWDC about FCPX?

All that was said in the keynote is that they are working on "a version of final cut pro team is hard at work on a version that will support all the performance and graphic capabilities of this machine".

Here's a link to the video, he mentions FCPX at about 5:30.

So in the keynote they just said "a version" not "a NEW version". Doesn't this just mean that when you download from the app store it will know you're on a MacPro with multiple GPUs and it will download the MacPro version of FCPX? Or am I missing more details?

I think anywhere between late August and late October, depending on the timing of the launch of Mavericks and the MacPro.

And you're assuming it will be a paid upgrade. It may well be, Logic Pro X has set that precedent. But Logic isn't fighting negative press the way X still is. So there could be an outside chance that 10.1 will be a free upgrade.

There have been a few references to a new version albeit open to interpretation. On the Apple site itself on the mac/applications/final cut pro page scroll down to the bottom. It says "The new Mac Pro is coming later this year. And so is a new version of Final Cut Pro X...it will be optimized to take advantage of the incredible power built into the new Mac Pro."

There's also a banner on the MacPro webpage talking about a new version of FCPX, and on the MacPro site it hints at stuff like:

Not only does it feature a state-of-the-art AMD FirePro workstation-class GPU with up to 6GB of dedicated VRAM — it features two of them. With all that power, you’ll be able to do things like seamlessly edit full-resolution 4K video while simultaneously rendering effects in the background — and still have enough power to connect up to three high-resolution 4K displays.

I think there's two distinct stories here. First is that FCPX will be optimized to take advantage of all the processing power that the new MacPro has.

Second is the fact that we haven't had a feature update since last October. A year is a long time to make a lot of enhancements to the software, be they fundamental UI changes (enhanced Roles, better timeline organization, or collaboration tools) or added features like mixing, round-tripping, etc.

The launch of the MacPro is just great timing. It was another sticking point for people who were giving up on Apple commitment to the pro market. Launching that along with a big 10.1 release should finally put to bed some of the garbage (and legit shortcomings) of FCPX.

Good points. I also think their announcement earlier this year about being committed to the pro market lost some steam in that there wasn't a big update that followed. After several months, it's like ok, so whats next? Just pretty words? The muscles coming with that awesome hardware now lets see what's coming. Hopefully free but doubtful. Who knows.

Yeah, the big marketing push fizzled. There wasn't any meat to it. that whole thing makes no sense to me at all now looking back on it. Why announce a push to win back pros when you have nothing to announce, especially when everyone else is making big announcements!

The MacPro announcement in June and the release of Logic Pro X in July have been two good new stories though...

The "free" idea could come with a caveat. I've heard some people speculate that 10.1 could be Mavericks only. While good for those willing to upgrade, those that can't would be dead-ended at 10.0.9.

wow that would open a whole new can of hate on fcpx with a new whoop azz version for the 1%'ers and fcpx-sx (like the old Intel crippled sx version chips) for us commoners. I think Apple would shoot themselves in the foot again with that approach.
