FCPX 10.0.9 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 14 Jul 2013 15:06 #28539

Just a bit of tangential rumor mongering.

On this weeks Accidental Tech Podcast with Marco Arment and John Sirecusa (writer of ArsTechnica's OSX reviews); there was some discussion of Apple's fall timetable. The implication being that John better be ready with his review sooner rather than later due to some insider info they both seemed to be aware of. Specifically, they were talking about a September launch for Maverics and the MacPro. And we all know what Apple has said is coming with the MacPro...

So I guess I could see Apple holding off on an update if the MacPro-timed launch was coming relatively early in September. It would be by far the longest interval between releases, but we might be looking at the most significant update to FCPX to date.

Marcus rubs his hands together...

I'm expecting earlier in autumn only because of the 30th anniversary of the Mac on January 29th 2013.

If Apple marks the anniversary with new hardware, they might want to make sure there's a reasonable gap between that date and the launch of Mavericks/iOS 7 and associated hardware.

FCPX 10.0.9 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 14 Jul 2013 15:42 #28541

My main question about the fall schedule was which would come first; iOS and iPhone, or Macs and Maverics. From what I've been hearing, iOS 7 needs a lot of work to be ready for release- so it looks like its going to be taking up the later release slot in Oct/Nov. That makes a September OSX/Mac launch pretty realistic. Apparently Maverics is already pretty stable and Haswell MacBookPros have started showing up in benchmarks.

As for your point about Mac's 30th anniversary. Apple doesn't tend to plan launches around those kind of dates.

Logic Pro X = FCPX update?

Does anyone know if the XML needs to be updated to work with Logic Pro X? It may just end up being a bug fix, but it is a Tuesday...

I thought about that, we'll have to see. But with the next major update probably only 6-8 weeks away (in September with Mavericks and the MacPro)- even a minor update seems unlikely at this point.

Whatever you prefer: "Tuesday" or "Logic Pro" -- XML needs to be updated. B)

Keep your appStore open. I'm doubtful, but who knows. A minor update to address XML compatibility would make sense if it's necessary.

There is no minor update possible to make XML work with round trips - there will be a major one or not.
Let's see what happens.

I'm not talking about round-tripping, only more XML depth for greater granularity and crossover of levels, filters, etc. But we'll have to see how it works already to tell what might be missing.

But yes, round-tripping, for both LogicX and Motion, will require a large update.

Something else is going on here. Look at this from the Logic X manual:

Page 90:

"Media Browser...

Movies tab: Shows the movie files in your Movies folder and iPhoto library. If you have Final Cut Pro X installed on your computer, your Final Cut Pro projects also appear in the Movies tab."

No idea if that is real FCP projects or not. Nothing else in the manual.

Yes, from what I've read, you can play FCPX Project in the browser as well as self contained QT movies. I'd make sure your Project timeline is rendered beforehand if I were you.

New features for Logic Pro X is already up on lynda.com.

This doesn't look like a rushed release at all.

Just downloaded the iPad remote app. Looks fantastic. Oh if we only had a mixer like that in FCP, and a color correction App for the iPad as well!

Here is hoping that Apple Pro Apps keeps up the momentum and the next Final Cut Pro update (just guessing) is a solid as this Logic update looks.

If you ask me I really don't want round-tripping between Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X's.

I rather see something like having both applications open and when I adjust the sound in Logic it automatically is adjusted in Final Cut Pro... :)

I don't think Apple is positioning Logic as a Post Production tool for mixing an entire project like SoundTrack was or ProTools, but rather firmly focused on music creation and a film scoring tool. You can bring in a temp music in a FCP sequence into Logic via FCPXML, or perhaps import a project for reference thought the media browser, then do you scoring. Then export a FCPX compound clip for placement in the FCP project.

It certainly seems "DAWish" to me. I don't see any reason for Apple to artificially limit its use. You can slice and dice SOT (SOFile?), dialogue, etc. with it as far as I can see.

Oh don't get me wrong you can use it for anything you like. I just don't think Apple is positioning it to be a Soundtrack replacement or a ProTools competitor in the area of audio post production.

I'm having the same feeling, and I feel it's a bit of a wasted opportunity since the app could use both. (and especially FCPX and the Apple Pro eco-system).

I bought it anyway, since I only got a Logic 8 licence, but wondering if anyone knows about specific post-production sweetening that you can do in Logic X, besides what we already have in FCPX?
For example, in FCPX you have automatic background noise removal, but I'm never impressed by the results. In Soundtrack Pro you could make a noise print, and then do the same, and results were MUCH better.

I have a Logic 8 and now X License, but I don't know the program really well. Does anyone know if it does some things like soundtrack Pro did, in regards to post-production sound sweetening?

Also, does anyone already know how projects and roles transfer to Logic X? If it doesn't do well, I'm thinking it's still waiting to happen in the next FCPX update, or if it's not, that would be really dissapointing.
Because X now gives us, in combination with FCPX XML, a decent audio mixer. And control hardware support!

Maybe Ripple Training should make a tutorial for Logic X geared towards editors.

Also wondering how big the need for XtoProtools is if you have Logic X.

All in all, glad to see Apple making an update on Logic. It's been 4 years or so, and however you slice it, it's a long time to update your pro-software. The interface looks much better, and reminds at FCPX.

Now it does look extra strange that Compressor and Motion still have numbers instead of just Motion X, Compressor X.

Logic is HUGE for musicians. Look at the quotes from the press release. Rarely will you hear of a musician using ProTools, engineers, yes, but musicians love Logic.

ProTools is HUGE for post production.

I don't think Apple is positioning itself as a ProTools competitor, even though it can really do many of the same things.

As far as training of Logic for film/post production, there is plenty of it on lynda.com

My guess (it's just that) is that Apple is going to come up with some collaboration feature that is going to allow multiple folks to work on different disciplines in FCP X simultaneously. So while an editor is working the edit a sound person would be tweaking audio while a colorist could be working on the color. In order to pull that off FCP's sound and color would need to be greatly expanded.

It's a good dream at least. ;)

Apple has always positioned Logic Pro as a ProTools competitor. The new Logic Pro looses no functionality, but gains a lot, plus is faster and easier to work in. I am a composer, and after two days with LPX, it is mind blowing fast and easy.

As for a post-production tool, hell yes it sure is! Once the bugs are worked out, I'll be doing pretty much the majority of my work in LPX, not FCPX. Mixing, sweetening, it is all so much easier and faster in LPX.

Not to mention the learning curve for LPX is really small, super fast and easy to learn.

Don't let the interface fool you, this is one mega-powerful DAW, that is geared to make life easier. Just like FCP X.

macProVideo.com has very comprehensive training up, and geared towards the Apple pro user certs, too. Very serious, in depth training. I'm going through it myself, and amazed at how far Apple has brought the DAW along.
