* Feature releases

Average Update Interval: 81. If we took that as gospel [which it won't be], the nearest Tuesday [which all feature updates have been released on], then we'd be looking at a release date of TUESDAY JUNE 18th. Though I'm more inclined to believe it will be a week later on the 25th.

After two maintenance releases, I think we can look forward to a substantial feature release.

FCPX 10.0.9 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 31 May 2013 01:07 #26570

Overall I'd say my priorities haven't changed since 10.0.6 was released last fall. In order of priority:

1. Expansion of Roles for better audio organization in the timeline, and audio mixing [blog post coming soon].
2. Motion integration/round-tripping
3. iChat theatre [PLEASE!]
4. Motion broadcast out
5. improvements to multi-user workflows
6. General performance improvements

Motion round-tripping and an interface that responds like butter, not peanut butter!

And faster rendering when doing a lot of layers...

Being able to connect clips to already connected clips would be great.

Better archiving abilities (i.e. archiving only USED media with handles instead of the whole clips).

Better audio mixing abilities.

Expansion of roles and maybe color coding clips for organization.

Better performance.

FCPX 10.0.9 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 31 May 2013 04:19 #26585

It will be really interesting to see when and how Apple handles the LogicX launch [hopefully this year]. It's a big deal for it's market, but what's the venue for it?

Final Cut Pro X had NAB when it premiered in 2011 [and I wonder if we'll ever see them back there again]. Without it, what would Apple have done? Just post FCPX on the Mac appStore unceremoniously? Cause that's the release challenge they face with LogicX.

With Apple's ability now to do virtual keynotes online and via aTV, I wonder if targeted launch events for specific software products like Apple's pro apps make sense. Would apple do a "Pro" event online to introduce major revisions to FCPX, Logic, Aperture, etc make sense? Logically I say no. But what's the alternative? To have LogicX or FCPX 10.1 appear on the appStore- with links to intro and tutorial videos on Apple's website? I suppose that seems logical. But I doubt there would be an AdobeMAX for Apple Pro apps.

It will be interesting to see how they frame the refresh of the MacPro at WWDC should it come to pass. To the best of my reckoning, this will be the first time the MacPro has gotten any stage time since WWDC 2006, when it transitioned from the G5 to the Intel MacPro in 2006.

Should it happen, I expect a presentation from Phil very similar to this one- except that I'd expect applause to last A LOT LONGER on the announcement of a new MacPro.

Instead of organising their own software events, Apple's recent policy is to use other people's shows.

By the way, the London SuperMeet is on June 28th. The day before EditFest London , two days after a London IBC conference .

However, however Apple publicise software updates, the post production world will be a-buzz on what they mean for weeks afterwards.

If pro software is the primary reason for high-end Macs to remain in the hardware lineup, then it will be Logic X to demonstrate CPU power, Final Cut Pro and Aperture to demonstrate GPU power and high bus speeds.

@Alex4D

PS: I'd like plug-in presets and styles please: The ability to name and save parameter combinations and change them globally - Define a style based on an effect (or more than one effect) and give it a name which you can save in the style browser. Once the style is applied in many places, make modifications such as 'change the blurriness to 35'. These styles could be project, event, user or application-specific.

... Once the style is applied in many places, make modifications such as 'change the blurriness to 35'...

that's partially already there. for each effect you apply enter a note to the clip. now you can search for blur for example in the clip browser. select all clips there and change the blur to 35 in one step.

That's a great tip!

However I'd also to bundle preset styles with plug-ins that I make do demonstrate their many abilities - as is available in some FxFactory-hosted plug-ins.

I would love to have this option too!!!

I'm not that involved in making FX templates, but a lot with subtitles. And it's really a pain for the user that there are no presets -- neither in FCP X nor in the XML option. Everything at any time falls back to default settings. This drive me crazy at some times -- the users as well (when working with subtitles). Imagine a documentary with 5+ languages with 600 to 1500+ subtitles each.
That's no fun and it's slow, really slow -- means it can take days. In this case the tip I gave only works partially as FCPX doesn't accept global change of horizontal text alignment.

But there might be a workaround for you (I haven't tried it) create an event with several stills, apply a special setting for any effect and a role or name. From there you can copy/paste settings.

Bottom line is that there is some base thing missing in FCPX.

P.S. Not to mention the "Open in Editor" option.

Would be nice if Event Manager X and FCP X were combined somehow into FCP X. I still thinks this part of FCP X is fundamentally flawed. So here's to hoping 10.1.0 deals with this.

When you deal with the large projects I do all the time there is no way I can work with them all loading at the same time, even with the most spec maxed out mac pro.

Responding to various posts.

Feature not on wish list: Subscription Model ;)

Feature not mentioned by anyone else: Multiple real time scopes on both viewers and allowing both viewers to have timeline clips.

The big marketing event for ProApp releases? Live streamed to AppleTV. Apple uses software to sell hardware. Now Apple will use ProApps Events live streamed to sell AppleTV.

Big surprise the upsets some people: Apple drops Compressor and integrates it into FCPX
Apple buys Pixelmator :cheer:

Are you just speculating or do you have some extra knowledge about this Craig?

Craig is speculating. But, if you look at Mountain Lion, it does look like file transcoding is being more and more built in to the OS. Right-click a video or audio file in the Finder and what is the last option in the pop-up menu? If it is dropped, that will be because it is integrated into the OS, not FCP exclusively. But this is all speculation.

I'd like to see a floating window for scopes, with a 2 and 4 up option.

Just for fun, I'll repeat what was told and can be repeated from Apple's private meetings at NAB Show 2013.
  • There will in fact be a new Mac designed strictly for high end professionals. It's form factor is unknown. I will be released "later this year".
  • FCP X was planned from the very beginning to have alternating bug/feature updates every 3 months, and that will continue indefinitely.
  • There eventually will be a paid update, but only when it is justifiable, warranted, necessary, and will be reasonable.
  • Collaboration/Multiple user environments are being looked at very seriously.
  • FCPX in it's first year and then at two years has sold more copies than FCP 7 did in it's whole three year life span.
  • FCP X was always designed from the beginning to be modular to a point, with reliance on third party developers for some functions. Buy the camera body, then get the lenses and rigs you need. That's how it works. (Personally I like it that way.)
  • No comment at all concerning better audio support, Logic Pro X, etc.

What I was whispered to by reliable sources on the show floor. Take some of these statements as second hand hearsay.
  • Apple has a number of folks deep inside the Hollywood production companies, seriously working with them on some big things.
  • Apple's pro app dev team is in more direct touch with their users than given credit for.
  • When FCP X was initially released, many of their higher education and corporate clients threatened to abandon Final Cut and the Apple platform altogether. To this very day, an infinitesimal number actually have. The numbers switching to FCP X are growing exponentially. The vast majority have NOT switched to any other NLE.

I am half hoping apple will continue to be slack on decent audio export support as then people won't need my audio export tool Vordio

Thanks Ben. That was a great roundup of the NAB news.

I'd only add that like you, I have some second-hand knowledge of Apple working closely with some productions to get them onto FCPX. Putting in way more man-hours than they could possibly justify on sales of the software. So it's obviously an area of intense interest for them.

As all but the most argumentative folks over on the COW Debated forum have conceded, there's no question whether Apple is going after the Pro market anymore. If they were trying to make a consumer/prosumer NLE, then every feature they've added and choice they've made would have been the worst one possible for that type of product.
