AppleGuru beat me to it, but your software raid will still work in EC.
This is the first time I have heard that DU will include RAID in the future, that will be good news.
I may be in the minority, but I prefer software RAIDs over hardware, because a hardware RAID requires an exact replacement device including the firmware.

If you need to create a RAID in EC, you can use "Terminal" to create one.

Not really liking some of the changes to EC, DU and to 'sudo' root access in EC.
I routinely have to fix permissions, owner and other system files for clients and family. For the average user, the extra security is a good thing.

Hope this helps, Greg

Soft raid lite application will be available at 26. Oktober for 49 dollars and the full version for 180 dollars. I have a Yosemite clone disk and think I can build a RAID from there but I have not tested yet. One thing is sure the new generation of Apple system developers do not have a clue what RAID is.

if creating a soft-raid is optional in TerminaL, within minures some kind soul will piublish a frontend GUI for this task. And for free .....

I was the evangelist praying softraids as 'poor mans Pegasus', and owning a cheap 4k cam, fast media is a must. But meanwhile I got my first extSSD, ~400mbps transfer ... that's twice as fast as any of my home whelded solutions :)

But why dropping a useful feature? 'cause it's rarely used? Making trouble (here: never)? ... we will never know ... Yosemite done softraids will cocntinue to work, fine.

My new working horse has the size of a matchbox, is brutally fast, me happy ....

Karsten, I think that Apple is slowly abandon professional users, I would not be surprised that the company will abandon FCPX altogether and increase developing new emojs, Grumpy thoughts from a non professional

<snore> wot? oh, no, c'mon, Makki, not again that discussion .... !!

Apple turns TO the professionals, the new ones, not the dinosaurs. For decades 30 blockbusters are made a <ear, mostly by the same movie fabs. Making software for them is a business? nope!

But just waste some hours at YouTube or Vimeo (or even on some 'adult sites' <cough> a friend lately showed me <cough> ) : Highly 'professional' done stuff!

All those daredavils in their wingsuites, those blinkblink rappers, the make-up girlies with Barbi eyes, the colorful cosplayers - their movies/products 20y ago simply impossible. Now done by 14y old ...

Does FCPX support 100 years old standards* ? Who cares!! … and what is a timecode anyhow, as long as the app reads my GoPro files!!

.... ok, I'm a lil' bit over the top, and when Ronny starts to post full throttle here at fcp.co, I hold my breath "wohoops, that's all under the hood of my tiny, single-windowed edit app???"

Every crash report gets instantly to Cupertino, so, they know very precisely what is in use and what not. Softraids get extincted, I'm pretty sure because nobody asid me uses them ..... they had a short episode on my desk, but so is life.- And in 10y we laugh about SSDs ....-

* when I tell my kiddies at school, how those 'standards' were created, reactions are close to panicing "wot?!" Usually crowning my story tellings with, that the Spaceshuttle respects standards of Roman Empires ox wagons ... (it does! … or did, meanwhile .... )

....... more fun than 'what is professional'................ ;)

"The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." …FCPX; oops I mean Mark Twain.

What I don't get is the persistence of this rumor. FCPX has received more updates at shorter intervals than legacy FCP ever did. Yes I think Apple screwed up the launch of FCPX without the features we needed, but that has changed.

As for "it is only iMovie pro", I encourage anyone to try to achieve a multi-cam short film in iMovie and see the differences. Apple is maintaining lots of Pro feature differences between the 2 NLEs, just like Garage Band is not Logic Pro.
I for one appreciate making editing easier and faster. None of this is to say I don't want to see additional improvements.
I think people are not seeing the changes that Apple is making in the underlying architecture, this takes time, but go watch the videos from WWDC and imagine the future.

I don't think Apple is abandoning the Pro segment anytime soon. Just my wooden nickels worth of opinion.

Hope this helps, Greg

In my line of work I still have to see the first client that is formatting his RAID systems using soft-RAID. So, although I agree it may be an inconvenience for some users, I could hardly imagine that not having a soft-RAID option in DU anymore could be qualified as" abandoning professionals" ;)

This said, and reading the latest information published by third-party developers, I stick with my advice that updating to 10.11.1 is still not advised for professional use at this time. Especially if your workflow depends on third-party plugins or hardware, or if you are running any Adobe software.

The 10.11.1 update did NOT fix the AU validation issue, as has been posted by iZotope: www.izotope.com/en/community/blog/produc...Capitan+Notification

iZotope and others have reported that they are working on updating their products for El Capitan.

Disk Utility did provide the GUI for the Terminal commands to create a RAID volume. Not sure you will see anyone provide a free GUI interface replacement. Graphic User Interfaces require some serious coding.
If you keep an older copy of Mavericks/El Capitan then you will have a simple solution. Maybe it will come back to DU.

While "Terminal" can be intimidating, and can be dangerous for certain procedures, there are lots of sites on the Web where you can simply copy and paste the code you need for doing all kinds of things in Terminal including RAID volumes. This is a good way to begin to understand the power of the command line.
Not RAID 5, however, as Apple does not natively support RAID 5. For this you will need to purchase Soft Raid.

Yes ssds speeds are amazing. You get the same speed as ~ 3/4 7200rpm hdds with 1 ssd on a fast bus. Many folks worry about the longevity of ssd write cycles, but I think this is not an issue at all. Add a couple or more ssds in RAID 0 and hold onto your hat.

If you are using USB3 it is best to use an enclosure that supports USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) or (UAS Protocol) as it will dramatically improve the bus throughput over standard USB Bulk Only Transport (BOT). This is not an issue if using a ThunderBolt bus.

Hope this helps, Greg

iZotope officially hasn't said anything, but since the 10.11.1 bug update, my iZotope products are loading up just fine. All my AU plugins are working just fine. But no 3rd party developer has officially announced compatibility yet.

Hi Ronny
While I don't consider myself a "Professional" editor, I have and do use software RAIDs. I did state that I am in the minority, but given the possible issue of the device (enclosure) failing, not the disk drives themselves, and given that I can create RAIDs for half the cost of hardware RAIDs I go that road. Too cheap I guess. Software RAIDs are a little slower, but that is not an issue for me for the type of work I do.

I appreciate your advice about upgrading to El Captain. AFAIK there is no current benefit to EC over Yosemite for FCPX. I do not believe that FCPX has been updated to support "Metal" yet, even though some are reporting faster render speeds.

Logic Pro still has issues, so this is another reason to forgo updating at this time.

Having said all this, I may update as I am just now between edits. Down to only 1 editing computer, rMBP, so I stayed with Mavericks but then late in finishing project I loaded Yosemite onto an ssd external drive for certain features, mostly Color Corrections.
When I update OSs I always do a clean install, so face lots of archiving and rearranging prior to update. There are some features of OS10.11 that I like, some I don't, along with iOS9 so I may bite the uncertainty bullet and go for El Captain. I use very few 3rd Party Plug-ins in FCPX or LPX so hoping I don't regret it.

I think that FCPX10.3 is due soon and it will require El Capitan. Seeing WWDC what's new leads me to believe that we will see some major features, out front and behind the scenes in the next releases.

Well you have warned me, so won't be able to blame you for any crashes. ;)

Thanks, Greg

Ben,

The link I posted to IS an official statement made by iZotope, on their website.

Quote: "We strongly recommend that Mac users postpone their updates to Apple’s OS X 10.11 El Capitan, even with Apple's release of the 10.11.1 update on October 21.

Plug-ins may not be able to pass AU (Audio Units) validation, which means they will not load in hosts that support the AU plug-in format. Dialog windows within the plug-in (such as the "Do you want to overwrite?" window in the Preset Browser) may no longer appear."

It's great to hear that your system works fine, but this does not mean we can advise everyone to update.

Any of your posts helps, Greg, and thanks for your hints&tips concerning softraids .... I'm using it just as a workhorse, actual project files onto it, edit, off from it.

Meanwhile I switched to ext SSS - awesome technology.

Keep in mind: hobbiyst here ... ;)

VidGreg wrote: ... As for "it is only iMovie pro", I encourage anyone to try to achieve a multi-cam short film …

makes me smile, spending this rainy sunday afternoon editing a recording I did lately, a book reading (by a 'professional'! ;) ) to support a local book-store: relaxing on my huge chair, pressing randomly 1,2,3 (two unmanned, one in my hand), using reframing for a virtual 4th cam, having good audio from a Zoom plus mic ... will give a nice DVD ....

… hey, this HAS to be iMoviePro, if a Daddy like me, does it relaxed like me, in short time like me ...
;)

Those 'iMoviePro sayers' don't get 'professional' and 'easy' in one sentence... like most IT guys, who behave like priests of a secret cult .....

.... I like to make movies, just making them. Just easy. :)

What I meant was, iZotope hasn't officially said their plugins work yet. But on my three, and many others I'm aware of, with 10.11.1, they are in fact working. Even if it isn't official yet.

I took the plunge and updated both FCP X and my OS. The only thing I've noticed that doesn't work is the dashboard timecode display in FCP X as has been reported. Everything else that I use seems to be working fine. I did notice that some things are quite a bit faster. I especially noticed that my Pegasus raid runs way faster than it did under Yosemite, Relinking is much faster, and opening projects is much faster. I don't use the Izotope plug-ins so I can't speak for them.

If you want to look at in the birds view, Apple has left the Pro market awhile back when they dropped there major software and hardware (server/RAID).
I don't see the removing the RAID function from the GUI as a sign leaving any market. More... hoe many peoples and technical reason like the empty the trash securely. Which again is not Apple like... the elegant Apple way would have been the OS would recognize what drive is installed and it would choose the right command.

Who knows... but I have read in a developer forum that the RAID function in Disk Utility suppose to come back.
Ture or not I hope so!

I've heard that around different corners of the internet as well ... It is my understanding that Disk Utility was being rewritten from the ground up, The exclusion of the software RAID function may not be a matter of choice, but the RAID portion may not have been ready to release yet.

Sounds eerily similar to another Apple app many of us are fond of now that was released with some missing key components a few years ago, which Apple has done a fairly good job to bring it up to speed and then some .... :)

I'll bet a number of professionals use softRAID on OWC Thunderbay 4, which is software RAID whether Apple makes it or not. The built-in DU RAID was very handy for smaller RAID 0/1 systems like the G-Tech G-RAID. In fact Apple still sells the G-RAID on their web site: www.apple.com/shop/product/H8250VC/A/g-t...s=fh%3D3783%252B2aa2

-- Even though it's no longer usable (for most customers) due to removing GUI RAID support from OS X. Apple hasn't added any warning about this on their web site.

The problem is worse than inability to format new RAID 0/1 systems without 3rd party software. If your system ever crashes and you need to run verify/repair on existing RAID 0/1 volumes, that is no longer available from the GUI. Yes you can do it with Terminal.

Besides the deleted functionality, the new Disk Utility has ominous problems. Apple has removed the ability to resize the window. Also the divider between the disk names and info no longer works. When placed on the divider, the cursor changes to a symbol indicating it repositions the divider, but it just doesn't work. You can't even view the complete disk volume name. Early in OS development there was lots of discussion about support for longer filenames, which was considered good. What benefit is having longer identifiers if junky utilities like DU truncate this? We may as well go back to 5 or 8-character identifiers.

There are two possible conclusions for the El Capitan DU behavior: (1) It's a bug and they went ahead and shipped it this way, or (2) It's an intentional design decision. Either one is bad.

Non-resizable windows and broken cursor events are typical of a high school programming error. You don't expect to see things like this on a mainstream utility from a major software vendor.
