tpayton,

As regards "AudioMixBus," no more mentions in the Flexo framework in iMovie 10 than in Final Cut Pro 10.0.9.

These elements are in both:

__ZN14FFAudioMixBussC1EP12FFAudioGraphP17FFPlaybackContext
__ZN14FFAudioMixBussC2EP12FFAudioGraphP17FFPlaybackContext
__ZN14FFAudioMixBussD0Ev
__ZN14FFAudioMixBussD1Ev
__ZN14FFAudioMixBussD2Ev
__ZN14FFAudioMixBuss11ConnectBussEP11FFAudioNodej
__ZN14FFAudioMixBuss14DisconnectBussEv
__ZN14FFAudioMixBuss25AllocateConnectionElementEv
__ZN14FFAudioMixBuss24ReleaseConnectionElementEi
__ZN11FFAudioBuss12PrerollBeginE6CMTimeS0_S0_dP13FFPrerollSync
__ZN11FFAudioBuss10PrerollEndEv
__ZN11FFAudioBuss20AdvanceScopingWindowEP13FFPrerollSync
__ZN11FFAudioBuss31SetParentaudio scopingWindowPathEP11FFIndexPath

No significant increase in mentions of "AudioRole"

This doesn't preclude better mixing and role handling in 10.1: I'm looking in the normal place where I'd find these references - improved audio might be handled elsewhere.

There's no date-stamps in 10.1.X files that would give any indication on how old this version of the codebase is, is there?

Considering it was launched in late October- the FCPX code in this version of iMovie could have been delivered to the iMovie team several weeks before release- or several months; depending on how the two groups are linked and how "final" the 10.1 code needed to be for iMovie 2013's purposes.

Sadly there are no useful time stamps.

The version of Compressor in iMovie 10 is from August 2012. Hopefully the stuff I've been finding in iMovie is from an internal version of Final Cut that provided the requisite background rendering, importing and exporting.

Once Final Cut Pro X 10.1 does appear, there's a chance that iMovie will be updated to 10.0.2 to make iMovie - Final Cut round tripping work properly.

@Alex4D

PS: More frequency counts to come comparing Final Cut Pro 10.0.9 and iMovie 10...

Alex, Well that sure looks encouraging. Perhaps a mixing bus has always been there, but just not enabled.

Regarding Logic Pro X, my gut is that Final Cut is doing what is really a trend of the industry removing the concept of "picture lock". Sure you can export to Resolve, and ProTools for workflows that need that, but what if Apple was making FCPX so that everything could be done in the App. For my workflow the need to take a trip to a dedicated color app is almost zero. I can isolate objects and track with SliceX, and perform other color functions to the point where a trip to Resolve isn't necessary (granted I'm not in a multi person workflow, and I'm not saying Resolve or ProTools or Logic isn't fantastic, I just try to avoid picture lock). I'm thinking that perhaps one of the great ideas of FCPX was to bring all the stuff that was separate apps (server, color, soundtrack, and to some extent motion) into one App that can do it all without having to picture lock.

Can you imagine if, like Alex has suggested with the goodies in iMovie and previous version of FCPX, multiple disciplines (sound, color, editorial) could work on the same project at the same time?

I hope sound designers will be able to work with sequences that are being edited by picture editors. Note that in Keynote, Numbers and Pages in iCloud you can work on the same documents at the same time - even seeing different users with different coloured cursors changing things in real time. In Keynote you can even jump to whichever slide a collaborator is working on to see what they're doing...

Working with video is hardly mentioned in the Logic Pro X manual, and there are few Soundtrack Pro file editor-like features in Logic. Logic used to have Soundtrack Pro bundled with it. That leaves a gap for an waveform editor somewhere in Apple's pro apps portfolio.

A feature I'd like in Final Cut Pro would be to only allow in and out points of audio at zero-crossing points: e.g. when control-option dragging.

Almost forgotten about that.

It still could very well be that the results of this hire won't be seen for a while- but it's certainly more relevant now than it would have been to an update in the first half of the year (which is what many of us were expecting).

I think reading into the help wanted section is like making assumptions based on supply chain leaks like they do with the iPhone. This job could just be an additional person to work on a team with a bunch of people already doing the same work. Maybe someone quit and they need to replace them. I don't think it means anything.

If it's dependent on a Mavericks update then I doubt it. Don't they usually release a GM before they update? Or is that just for major OS upgrades like from ML to Mavericks or iOS 6 to iOS 7?

iMovie 10 is based on an unreleased version of Final Cut Pro X. Here are few more interesting elements in the 'Final Cut Pro X' part of iMovie.

Unless stated each element doesn't appear in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.9

FaceSelection appears 45 times - probably related to Aperture metadata compatibility
e.g.

-[FFFaceSelectionTool onScreenControlsForTool]

WhiteBalance appears 119 times (7 times in 10.0.9) - this might be for an iMovie-only feature

[_WhiteBalanceSelectionToolDelegate actionStringForSaveChanges]

ModelDocument 131 times - a new kind of document that can be saved and opened - for editing templates?

+[FFModelDocument findLatestBackupInDirectory:]

FFMotionSettingsTool: 63

-[FFMotionSettingsTool inertiaCamButtonChanged:]

FFJSONArchiver: 24 - used for the uploading projects to the web - not just movies

-[FFJSONArchiver _encodedRepresentationForObject:]

Syncronized: 12

-[FFAnchoredCollection isSyncronized]

JumpCut: 32

-[FFAnchoredSequence(FFRetimeCommand) actionRetimeJumpCutPreset:framesToJump:allowVariableSpeedRetiming:error:]

PaintTool: 47

-[FFEditPaintTool skims]

Alex - remember white balance was in the fcpxml 1.3 document?

Ben - I will still try to use ccs as audio bus but it still requires picture lock.

The colour balance part of the new Final Cut Pro X XML:

<!-- The 'adjust-color' element modifies the color adjustments for a clip. -->
<!-- This element contains adjustments for color balance, color match, and color corrections. -->
<!ELEMENT adjust-color (colorBalance?, colorMatch?, (cb-correction | filter-color)*)>

<!ELEMENT colorBalance (data)>
<!ATTLIST colorBalance enabled (0 | 1) "1">

I sure hope the color controls get a new UI, or at least new options in 10.1. Color in fcpx has incredible potential but is simply lacking because of the UI. Curves, white balance, a circular 3 way color corrector, and more precise color board... and oh yeah the ability to name color correction instances, would be a great addition.

B-spline masks and a simple tracker would be icing on the cake.

Alex - do you think color balance = white balance and skin tone match from iMovie 10? It seems to me it would. Those controls are excellent and simple in iMovie 10.
