FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 03 Apr 2014 01:25 #43959

I'm not sure which is the easier problem to solve, that or a new Roles based visual language.

Here's one idea for how multichannel audio from two clips could be broken out. With each one having a DIALOGUE Role, and then one having a SFX, and the other a new AMBIENCE Role.

Thank you for this mock-up. It's pretty much exactly like I picture it. I don't think multi-track audio with different roles in a single clip is really that much of a problem. It really shouldn't show up unless you "expand audio components," and then if you do so, they should pop into place according to their assigned roles like in the diagram. There should be some global switch to expand and collapse all audio for convenience, too.

Someone wondered about the color, but why shouldn't it just be whatever color is assigned to the role? Personally, I don't really know why the audio portion on an expanded clip is still blue... I get that they're indicating that it's still connected to the clip, but I think a better way would be to use another color or indicator, or even a "blend" (like a blue-green). Subroles can be a slightly dimmer version of the same color, which you can manually override with a completely different color if you want.

So are we thinking an update before/during NAB?

FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 03 Apr 2014 13:01 #43973

The last two updates have been the Tuesday and Thursday before NAB. I think if we don't see one today, there won't be one this week.

That does potentially bode well for 10.1.2 being a feature release, since I'd imagine if there's new features to talk about, they'll want to release it after the press briefings they usually have this weekend.

If there's news to be had, watch Scott Simmons, Larry Jordan, and Philip Hodgetts for announcements.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Adobe Announced updates to their video applications. One interesting point of note was their mention of RED GPU support. Let's hope this we'll see this in the next release of FCPX as well.

And today HitFilm announced plugins for a variety of applications including FCPX and Motion. Don't know if this leans on the new FXPlug3 support or not. Press Release-

I like Disproportionate Pictures' idea, and I have an idea that builds upon it...

When you want to delete clips on from the timeline, a key command brings up a white bar at the bottom of the timeline window that you control horizontally with your mouse... accompanied by a square moving "ball". You use the white bar... a "paddle" if you will... to aim the "ball" towards the clips you want to delete. When the "ball" strikes a clip, the clip "explodes". Functional... and fun! See attached diagram...

Here's my wish. Make an iPad app that mimics the Java based browser from Final Cut Server. Allow me to keyword & organize my footage in the app. Allow me to share a link to the footage with my producer so they can access it on their iPad. Have an option on import to create this online review system; then I can drop my footage into the system and get a notification when it is ready to organize.
I got the idea from Stu Maschwitz, who wrote about an Lightroom iPad App that lets you organize your library on the go.

I think in the next coming releases (it may not be this next one) we will see some things reworked in the color board. Possibly features like luma curves, RGB curves, and perhaps even color wheels! ;) Oh and maybe the ability to import .dng into FCPX.

I would like to see better color tools, but I really think that's something they will leave up to 3rd party developers to create a plugin for. It's probably one of those things where different uses have different color grading needs, so eventually something good will come out again. I say again because that technicolor plugin looked amazing, I'm so bummed that they killed it off.

FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 06 Apr 2014 12:49 #44125

A bit of Pre-NAB news via Larry Jordan,

"Apple announced today that they had more than one million separate installations of Final Cut Pro X. Last year, they said that the installed base of FCP X users exceeded that of FCP 7. Today, they put a number on it."

Larry also says at the end of his post,

"Monday will see a variety of very cool announcements."

I remain optimistic we'll see an update from Apple this week. Probably Monday or Tuesday.

The function I miss a lot is the lost "noise print" from Soundtrack, where you can select some portion of a sound to delete in another one. For certain type of noise, it's far far far far far far far better then any gate or pass. Now I use Audacity for it but it's really time consuming in terms of round tripping.

Same thing last year. I would be (almost) shocked if an update for X came out this week.

We got a (minor) update for NAB last year. But we're not getting one this year, apparently.

It's only Tuesday. Personally if I were Apple, I would wait until some of the hype died down from Monday and Tuesday before releasing an update.

FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 08 Apr 2014 20:16 #44249

I would love to see it- but I don't think it is.

But 10.1.2 could come any week. Next week... or another month from now. NAB had been the only consistent release date for the past 2 years. But for whatever reason they either decided they didn't need to, or weren't ready to release.

I sometimes worry that FCPX does take a hit in "mind-share" by eschewing NAB. But Apple's mandate is to manage it's own message.

FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 08 Apr 2014 20:17 #44250

I'm hoping there's an unannounced presentation by Apple at the super meet tonight. While new features would be great, I think the pro apps team needs to demonstrate more case studies. Specifically, I think they need a "Cold Mountain" scenario: A major studio movie with big stars being cut on final cut ten. It's been reported on this site that such a movie is already in post, so maybe tonight we find out what it is?

FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 09 Apr 2014 07:28 #44266

Nada from Apple, but I wasn't expecting much. If anything, I tend to agree with most people that Apple's presence on the show floor is missed, despite the fact that deep down I know NAB is really a bunch of hype. Last year it was 4k. This year it seemed to be that everyone had a new camera, gyro rig, or solution on how to move the terabytes of data production seems to be more than happy to sling our way ;)

But in an interesting fact, during Adobe's presentation they mentioned that they had 1.8 million cloud members, while Apple said there were 7 million installs of FCPX. Interesting... no?

No not really unless hey can give us a definition of "installs"
