FCPX 10.1.2 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 24 Mar 2014 14:34 #43312
FCP 7 and X can't have both support for MXO because FCP7 is 32 bit and nog 64 bit thats the problem.
I have software from Matrox for the MXO2 which support FCP-X 10.1.1 and OS10.9.2 and it is working OK |

Then why would Blackmagic's box be able to have support for both? Which it did the last time I checked. |

With FCPX integrated mask/vigenette, you have buttons for changing form or size of your mask, and another one anchored to the center for turning the axe.
The problem I encounter is that the anchored one is strictly align on the "size" button. I always have to zoom/dezoom in my canvas for grabbing it properly, or maybe there is a keyboard command for choosing it I do not know. The other thing is that is about the canevas size. When you show your clip at 50%, you have "black" space around your clip that you can use to put or move mask outside of the frame. But when your at 75%/100% size, you cannot use such space, canevas size is stricly limited to frame size. |

A couple of interesting points brought to my attention on the COW forums by Bill Davis. For anyone attending NAB;
FCPWorks is holding a Trainers Event with Apple people in attendance. Here's the link- www.fcpworks.com/nab_trainers_event/ Second, RippleTraining have been announced as a Gold sponsor of the Supermeet on Tuesday, so they'll be up on stage along with Adobe, Black Magic, etc. Wish I was going... |

I'm not going this year. Last year I went to NAB for the 23rd time and I have decided it would probably be my last one. I agree with Ben this show has become a superficial fancy-fair, which I regret. I fully understand why Apple does not want to be part of this anymore.
I will be extremely glad if the 10.1 and Mavericks bugs all get sorted out by next month. Now that will be a happy day ![]() -Ronny |

I'm skipping the SuperMeet, I've lost interest in it, just a bunch of self-aggrandizing, and this will be my last year, also. Like Ronny, I've been going for a very long time. But did skip it two years ago. I caught everything and more online, without the crowds. Only going for two days this year. Last year. Yep, fix some bugs, we'll be happy.

I'm sure if you've been going for decades the general allure has probably lessened over time.
For someone like me, who lives relatively far afield from the collected training opportunities of PPW, and the ability to get hands on with gear and talk to developers... it's novelty is still fresh. Doing beta-testing with on-set logging apps, I know I'd kill for an hour or two at the Movie-Slate booth right about now. |

Sounds serious. ![]() I'm a huge MovieSlate fan. Just had a crazy two day shoot and it is a joy to have a shot log with circle takes and notes that are spit out from MovieSlate. |

It's criminal how little instruction there is online for the app. Any chance we could have a private discussion on this? I'm renting a camera to do some testing and a bit of a primer from someone who's used it would be really helpful. |

In case anyone missed it on the front page-
www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/news/1380-larry...e-in-final-cut-pro-x Larry has had early access to X updates in the past, but I'm prone to think if he's writing wish lists for the next update then he probably doesn't have insider knowledge this time. NAB has snuck up on me- If Apple keeps to it's pre-NAB release sched of the last 2 yrs, we could see #FCPX 10.1.2 as early as this week. The last two were Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Those were both maintenance releases though. If this is a feature update, then things could be different. Apple's press briefings will be this weekend as well, so if there's any news to come out of those, we should hear it by Monday of next week. |

My top wishes for the coming update:
- Bug fixes, bug fixes and bug fixes. The 10.1 copy/paste issues are on top of the list. - A further improved FCPX XML. - Being able to keep converted media outside of the Libraries. Those alone would make me a very happy FCP X editor ![]() -Ronny |

I know this isn't a big issue for a lot of people, but the scrolling timeline is a favorite of mine. Just imagine being able to sit back and watch all those clips and waveforms pass by in real time. I think it would be an awesome feature.
But on the very top is: Stability and speed! I work with long timelines and I really need both badly. I can live with a few bugs and workarounds (I know Apple is eventually going to fix these) but just give me stability and speed! Also it would be nice to be able to select which "Project" you would like FCPX to open. So if I have a Library with 10 or more Projects it would be nice to see a feature where I can select which Project I want to access from outside FCPX. Kind of like the Event Manager X from Philip Hodgets. Besides from that....I still love FCPX and I am sure this is going to be THE best NLE for many years to come. RYAN |

Beyond my "go to" list of areas for general development (audio mixing, Motion/Logic integration, Roles organization, enhanced colour correction toolset, collaborative editing)- some specific things I'm hoping to see-
1. XML improvement. Passing projects back and forth this way, I've found gaps in the information resulting in some errors in the new project opened on another machine. 2. RED 3rd party GPU support. Recently added to Resolve, support for 3rd party GPUs will certainly be a huge deal for new MacPro owners, resulting in even better r3d performance. 3. Scrolling timeline. Just to throw Richard Taylor a bone and axe the long-standing #1 item off his Top 100 list. ![]() |

I totally agree !!! *) The XML options are quite of a nonsense at this moment – nobody really knows what either of the options include.
A few notes on that. A "cross hair" playhead could be nice. But it would be a pain for the programmers and for the performance in case you got any kind of thumbnails displayed for any "track". A lot of "pre-render" is needed depending on timeline scale and fps settings. The selecting "Projects" had been an easy one in the old times of FCP X. Philip showed that and made a lot of people happy. Event and Projects had been different databases. My old X-Files app showed that as well in a different way. Now they are merged into an all in wonder database "Event & Projects" where several of these databases can exist in one library. So its not a problem to hide show one these "Event & Projects" all in one databases using a third party app. From production management it makes sense to collect events & projects into one database. The former implementation using 2 data bases did lead to situations where events had been disabled while projects relying on the events were still visible. So some stuff got offline. With the 10.1.x releases this is less likely to happen. But to make something reliable happen it needs a better file organization. If Apple would do that it would be great. Currently several of the "wrapped" formats can't be left alone in their original folders and will be moved and wrapped to the "Original Media" folder inside the library. To make them independent you can consolidate the project. But that will move them all into some big folder loosing the original structure. Anyway, one can live with that. But this requires a really good workflow structure of the person who sits in front of the machine. ... I could go on for endless. But I stop here and hope you get a better idea. -Andreas |

But this requires a really good workflow structure of the person who sits in front of the machine.
This is absolutely correct. We all have different workflows, even if we work in exactly the same branch of video editing. So it's not up to the developers of the applications we work with to come up with a system that fits every single need, that would be totally unworkable. It's up to us to look at how an application works and to develop the best possible workflow around it that fits our personal needs. And this goes back to the very first steps of any production: if you get your production workflow streamlined from the start you will have far less issues at the end, in post-production. -Ronny |

Ryan, I sounds to me like you just need to re-think the way you are organizing things. When I create a "Library" it is called whatever the name of my movie/video. Inside that Library are the assets, like video clips, photos, music as well as my project file(s). Only things associated for that production/video/movie. Then in FCPX you can chose to open that as well as any other "Library" film/video/movie. I would not create a library just for storing Projects from every video/film production. Make each Library it own individual thing. |
