Maybe for iMovie users. But I don't think FCPX users are using their baby photos and dog pics as source media. The idea with iMovie is that is exactly what it's market is. With FCPX the expectation is that you're importing your media into a library for a specific project. On my home suite I have thousands of iPhoto pics. It's nice that I can import something from there if I wanted to, but I don't need it cluttering up my workspace by default. I can count the number of times I've pulled a pic out of iPhoto on one finger. If a client gives me photos I certainly don't drop them into my photo library for import. I just import them directly into the library. I suppose that might behoove some workflows where you want to cache up 10 years of photos, but not me. one area of the app is for project (library) media and the other is for resources that are not yet part of the library like music, photos, generators, etc.

So I just triple-checked. There's not a single baby or dog photo in my Photos library.
Besides if the Photos library is so irrelevant to FCPX users perhaps it shouldn't be in the app at all. Even less in the important area where all the professional filters, transitions and other tools are.
FCPX libraries can be selectively hidden, no reason the Photos library couldn't be similarly implemented.

It's there. You have it. Don't understand why you want to mix things which you've imported into your production workflow with stuff that you haven't. Why put them in the same place? Don't get what's wrong with where they are now. Don't get the benefit of mixing them into the library panel when they behave differently and have different structure. Just not seeing the point. I guess you'll want your iTunes library there as well. Btw, really bad idea to import your video into Photos and use it as a way to get your footage into FCP. FCP does a lot of stuff with processing media when it's imported from a camera, which is not happening when you go through iPhoto or Photos or Aperture, all of which use the same library structure.

I'd agree. Very irrelevant to FCP users. But it is there to appease and match iTunes iMovie users moving up and to have upward feature parity.

All my stock music is in iTunes playlists, all my stock photos are in Photos. Not irrelevant at all.

Do you like the idea of Photos and iTunes libraries appearing in the libraries panel Ben?

I love it. No way do I want all of my pre-recorded music, composed music, photos, and video to all be in one massive library in the manner we are speaking.
Now, Final Cut Server, that was a whole different ballgame, and I used to keep everything there, even business and production documents. But it was way more powerful, affordable and customizable than anything we have now.

thought it was a dumb trick then, still think it is. Haven't had trouble finding effects. Want to look for music. I'd rather find it first in iTunes. Why bring it all into FCP. Really?you need more stuff and clutter in the libraries panel?

We have been testing this long before this video was made, only to find that it bogs down FCP X with massive sound libraries. So I would be very careful with this workflow. This can be a good idea for some if you only have a couple of hundred SFX. But real sound libraries as the ones from BBC, Sound Ideas, SFX Series or similar contain between 3.000 and 10.000 WAV clips each. Putting multiple collections like these inside an FCP X Library is not something I can advise.
Add to this that professional music and SFX collections get updated all the time. When you keep them managed in iTunes or a DAM the updates are automatically added to your media management system. Not so when you manage your music and SFX in an FCP X Library: you will have to manually add new clips over and over agin. Very easy to forget this.
That's why, just like Tom, we manage and search music and SFX collections externally and we only add the ones we need to the FCP X Library. iTunes and dedicated asset management systems also have more controls for organizing and searching clips. I agree with Ben: Final Cut server was really good for this. But I am pretty sure we will get something similar back, even much better

as a sidenote:
Here looms a dilemma, you always have, when you're offering a 'universal' product:
For my tiny school projects, a central SFX-storage, integrated as a Lib with all the organizing and search features we love from FCPX, it's a heaven's gift. To mention: we have exactly ONE Mac in usage...
For 'fabs' like BBC, it's perhaps nonsense/unsmart (<< does this word exist??) ...
Esp.for BBC: alone for their radio productions (audibles) from the last 100y, they must have warehouses full of SFX ... !!
Having the option, to make it so or so, is perhaps 'better'.

I wish there was a way to add audio and graphic effects (footage for compositing etc) in the same way that transitions and titles were added. In the way that the are not added to the files in the event browser. I usually find myself adding numerous different ones while trying out which ones fit, then you have a damn clutter of files you're not using that you have to manually remove.
Maybe an option to add only the ones in use to the event as you close FCPX or something for people who still want them there.
How are you people dealing with this?

Apple released updates to FCPX in the weeks leading up to both NAB2012 [10.0.4] and NAB 2013 [10.0.8].
It will be interesting to see if Apple will update on user numbers in their press briefings.

Hi
Regarding SFX Libraries:
This is what I use www.icedaudio.com/site/
As it stands there is a function to have Audiofinder drop a selected clip in the timeline of Logic Pro and Pro tools (at the play head location).....maybe the developer could add FCPX to that list. We can dream.

NAB one week way! Does Apple have anything in store for us? Before, during, after?
Nobody knows until Apple says so. That's the Apple rules, kids, can't change it.
I'm still not holding my breath, or getting my hopes up too high.
Yet I'm sure there will be something significant by the end of 2015, I hope.
Spanish Inquisition and all that.

Well, at least Apple will be present at the FCPWORKS event and according to Sam Mestman "Apple Product Marketing will present an update on Final Cut Pro X".
