There is no reason for Apple to buy rival NLE systems or companies. They are moving in a very different direction, pursuing very different paradigms then the rivals. Why would Lexus be interested in buying Volkswagen? Volkswagen has no technology to help Lexus build luxury sports sedans. But they do have that cute bug...

Even if Apple wants to implement some of the same things competing NLEs are doing- they're going to have to go about them in entirely different ways.

Apple has bought companies in the past just to kill off the competition like Lala in 2009.

I doubt Adobe is selling, and I don't think they would want the backlash if they EOL'd Avid. So the world is stuck with Avid for now.

Tomorrow is another Tuesday and there's a whole lot of quiet going on. If only there was something to buzz about.

Yup. Whole lot of nuthin'- and this year there isn't even any potential hardware/software to tie a release to, with Yosemite having been out for a while now.

We're another week ahead on my chart above- but still a few weeks away from the overall feature update average of 122 days which would come on December 19th. But all three of the last feature updates have been over 134 days, which would definitely put us into January.

Impossible to say what's happening, and as I've said elsewhere it will be interesting to see if the dev team has given any weight to a Yosemite-style UI update for ProApps, since they only JUST finished migrating all the apps to the current style less than a year ago.

Speaking of OS upgrades. One wonders how Apple's move to annual OS upgrades is impacting ProApps development. On the one hand, I'd imagine some core media handling improvements in the OS are a good thing but it has impact the ProApps development strategy as OS dependancies may be increasing.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of "hop scotch" thinking in that why do something this year when it will be a magnitude easier to implement next year. On the other hand, if there's really no communication between teams you may get a year of, "all that Pro Apps work and we have to do a major revision just for OS compatibility."

It would certainly be impacting their schedule.

The dev team must have their own multi-year agenda. And then every year they have to fit in any OS related development. In some cases this may mean instituting features could be easier- with a more verbose set of frameworks. But in some cases it could mean sidelining your own update schedule to fit in updates/changes motivated by OSX.

The new normal now that they no longer have to support three generations of OS updates and can focus on the current one, it makes sense they would be developing the features in tandem with the OS.

That would certainly be the case with the first ever current OS only release of FCP X 10.1.

10.1.3 supports OS 10.9.2 and up so it does support the previous OS so it did spread a bit again.

I wonder what the chart would look like comparing FCPX feature updates specifically to OS upgrades. It's not that overall development is slowing but that feature updates might a bit more of "fits and starts" as more features may be tied to OS upgrades.

I guess I meant to say that the 10.1 update being Mavericks only was because the massive update was based around key Mav only features.

The Yosemite AV foundation now makes it possible to make reference videos which would make Motion round tripping possible again. The AV Foundation seems to be a sleeping giant, Philip Hodgetts wrote an interesting blog post regarding this.

the phrase 'tic tock strategy' jumps into mind, doesn't it? :woohoo:

being an absolute engineering-ignorant, a few things are obvious anyhow:
a) a tool like FCPX is some sort of flagship

b) pointed to a 'pro' market, it doesn't have to offer the 'latest' features, but being rock-solid

c) this target-group is veeeery conservative&hesitant when it comes to 'all new/updated update/banana-ware' ... been in the ad-industry some hundred years ago, for me an excellent indicator for this policy is the naming scheme: not FCPX v2, 3, 4, but incriminations on the second-behind-dot, like FCPX10.05... nice ;)

… looking forward for new marvels to come … whenever!

User replaceable RAM, Hard drives and more than 2 USB 3 slots and true stereo on the ipads..
Oh, and which OS should I be using? Mavericks or Yosemite, or is there a new one coming in 2015? I wager it will be called Grand Canyon...

Nah, too obvious, it has to be hard and prickly, difficult to deal with, thinking Cactus or Prickly Pear.. Although I fancy Joshua Tree.. The next OS is going to be called Joshua Tree.. This is Tim's idea to make up for the PR disaster with the last U2 album...

The OS has all the songs as sound effects and the place holders in FCP 11 will be band members..
