I think you are right on.
Extensions will allow you to use different actions from other apps without opening them, and I think it will be a huge productivity boost. Both programs will have to be written to allow the extensions. I indeed think this may be one of the improvements in the next versions of FCPX, Logic, Motion, other 3rd party apps, etc…
Extensions will be limited in functions so if doing extensive changes you would still need to use the other app.
As to other 3rd party apps, I think this will be a big demarcation line of Apple ecosystem support and inclusion. For example, Pixelmator is IMHO more likely to buy into extensions than Adobe and Photoshop. Time will tell.
I am also going to like the ability of iOS to use Airdrop to send files to Macs. This was not possible before. Sending video off an iPhone to a Mac will now be much easier especially when it is someone else's iPhone. This just happened to me where we had lots of iPhones doing B-roll fill shots.
Hope this helps, Greg

All that control in one app would be overwhelming, confusing, and plain too much any way you look at it.

And Apple is clear about FCPX being the DSLR model; buy the core from Apple, buy the peripherals from others.

Opendoc is reborn! Cyberdogcow moofs with joy! :woohoo:

I guess that's why it's great. Just like the photo app in iOS if you're happy with the built in tools that's great.
If you want more power it's just a click away.

Awesome!, I don't think I used my free eWorld trial, maybe they'll bring it back too! Also, extensions are *potentially* very cool. Open an image in preview and check out the markup tools for a little taste...

These comments make me wonder:
Are extensions the way to bring back "Motion round-tripping" in a modern version?
Do you think this makes sense?

99% of the mark-up tools in Preview have been there for a very long while now, don't think that use extensions.

No, extensions won't be how round-tripping works. That'll be an FCPXML based solution.

I'm not so sure. The way mark up now shows up in mail could mean we possibly see things like behaviours, stabilisation showing up in FCPX. After all there a copy of Motion inside FCPX already. Certainly it would give greater scope for 3rd party interfaces, such as 3 wheel Colour correction etc. I'm sure photographers would love it if they could use their familiar tools to work on video.

I really love this idea of Apple building a solid platform for other developers to augment with their own wonderful ideas and not having to reinvent the wheel each time. Good for them and good for us.

Seanus wrote: Was using my iPhone 6 over the weekend taking some beach shots. They needed some editing so I opened up a the controls and started to play. Tools are amazing, but what was more interesting was that with extensibility I had available all the other tools from my other camera apps as well. Right in the Photos App.

Now I know this is what is planned for the Photos App coming soon, but it got me thinking about what might be coming for FCPX.

What if all the controls for Motion were suddenly available in FCPX? All the controls from Photos (for grading). All the controls from Logic Pro X?

Could this be why we are waiting? Could it be tied with the release of the new Photos App?

also notice that videos in the iOS Photos app can be edited with the iMovie extension

The prevailing theory seems to be that Extensions are how Apple plan to fill out any functional gaps between Aperture and the new Photos.app once it launches early next year. But since the full feature set of Photos isn't known yet, we obviously can't say what those gaps are.

I'm still a bit foggy how these Extensions fit into Mac apps, so maybe people could keep their eyes out for examples to post here.

Oh, and it IS Tuesday, but we're still a bit early I think so don't get your hopes up. B)

A personal bug fix/feature list for 10.1.4 to pass the time while rendering 3 versions of a 25 min project:

Bugs:
  1. Issue with files getting deleted when re-linking (especially over ethernet)
  2. Short 'spike' in video levels when using opacity sliders inside a compound clip with broadcast safe on (we use Magic Bullet Looks 2 auto-shoulder, but this happens with native filters as well). We work around this by fading in and out of a black generator
  3. Renders sometimes lost. Also unrenderable sections
  4. Performance still suffers on maxed out nMP 2013
  5. Forgets 'Group clips by' and 'Sort by' settings when reverting to original layout
  6. Updating waveforms slows system to a crawl
  7. Waveforms sometimes have missing blocks on clips - fixes when turning on loudness effect
  8. Crashes sometimes on paste attributes
  9. Retiming FS700 slow motion footage from i.e. 400% to 100% - 100% section is not truly 100% thus creating frame-blending artifacts or missing frames if Frame Blending is off. Btw this happens with all footage - the above is an example
  10. Inaccurate first/last thumbnail after trimming clips in timeline. The first/last frame of the thumbnail might be before or after the edit point. This happens on more zoomed out timelines as well. Would be nice to be more accurate
  11. When using export bundles, in the export dialogue window when clicking the arrow to go to the next element of the bundle the audio settings are not shown - workaround is to go 'back' and 'forward' once and the options show up again!
  12. Faster UI

Features:
  1. Types of curves for opacity sliders (and other effects)
  2. Paste attributes for individual color correctors
  3. Remove attributes
  4. Continuous playing of all clips in event browser
  5. Replace clip while keeping attributes
  6. Re-arrange audio clips based on roles - A visual segmentation rearranging tool
  7. Motion tracking for masks
  8. Ability to edit match color
  9. Drag-n-droppable effects
  10. White balance and Skin balance color pickers (editable)
  11. Searchable effects in timeline - Which clips use 'this' effect
  12. R128 Metering (over time) for audio
  13. Option for effects to be pre/post color correctors
  14. Better De-interlacing options
  15. Mono channels in multi-track exports are 3 db higher (due to stereo pan law) - give us an option to turn that off
  16. Don't lose renders for the whole compound clip when adjusting opacity sliders
  17. Adjustable cross-over for shadows/mids/highs
  18. Option to make color correction filters pre-post effects
  19. 'Master' metadata - renamed Favorites searchable in timeline
  20. Make adjustment layer a feature, so it passes on in projects without re-downloading missing effects on other systems
  21. Allow log processing to be post effects and color correction
  22. Allow custom LUTs for third parties
  23. Custom layouts
  24. Multiple scopes
  25. Better broadcast safe plugins/tools
  26. Range select-render only that section
  27. Setting to create default Pan Mode on imported clips (i.e. Pan Mode: Stereo instead of None)
  28. Organisation/Disabling of plugins/effects/generators
  29. Show a list of missing effects/elements - like After Effects does.
  30. Template libraries - Market place with user template libraries for different workflows!

Ideas:
  1. Easy (clever) options like 'Send to Mixing Engineer' 'Send to Colorist' and automatically creating projects :)
  2. Advanced hyperlapse tool! :)
  3. Create special subtitling class - Easier subtitling
  4. Versioning tool
  5. Custom export file renamer
  6. Proper multi-user sharing/editing
  7. Automatically detect audio and create blank titles for easier subtitling
  8. Beat detection for music and resizing music to fit time while cleverly cutting sections instead of time stretching

Oops - Renders are done!!... Bye!

That is a long and interesting list. I totally agree with most of them, the render issue, plugin management, better performance for nMP, I could ad roundtrip to motion, section for favorite effects.

Great list nick314

For anyone who watched the VUG yesterday- the biggest topic of conversation seemed to be Roles- better tagging and organization. Where have I heard about that before...

With all the attention it's getting, I'm hopeful we'll see some progress in this area in the near future.

FCP X is a maturing product, what I am worried about is Apple going to keep updating for Mavericks? Do we all need to update to Yosemite to have the updates? Already I see incompatible updates listed..

What I have never understood is why has Apple not bought a decent company of the likes of BMD or Adobe or Avid? Buying Avid for example makes sense, they have a huge range of products that could compliment Logic, and a few stinkers that just need a very quiet fade into obsolescence..

Apple have done this in the past, bought big expensive products, shipped them with Final Cut, I think of Color...

Why have separate apps anyway? Why is Logic, FCP X, Motion and Compressor not 1 bigger all in 1 app like Final Cut Studio, bang the whole lot, with an updated Livetype, call it Final Cut Studio X...

The one big thing that came out of the VUG yesterday was the multi-user at the same time ability of Avid and how this is simply not possible in FCP X, so really Avid is on the way out with the editing side of things, Tim really needs to stop fondling his iwatch and buy at least a portion of Avid, that allows for multi-user at the same time, re code into FCP language and post this update on the App Store..

• FCPX updates hinge on OSX frameworks and advancements. At certain points Apple has to cut off support for older OS's in order to improve the product further. There's no way around that. And OSX updates are now free, so there's no barrier to entry other than hardware restrictions, which are the same for Yosemite as they were for Mavericks.

• The more you bundle apps together, the more possible points of failure you create. The complexity of the code base increases- making bugs and performance issues more likely. So I'm not a fan of this idea. Final Cut Studio was never 1 application, but a suite of individual applications.

• I seem to remember the big thing out of the VUG is how painful everyone said it was to go back to FCP7 or AVID after using FCPX for a length of time. Features like multi-user improvements can be added. But it would be going backwards to buy a company like AVID.

Screw roles, I just want tracks back. (No I don't.)

The tagging methods for subroles leaves much to be desired. Has anyone had the idea of having a subroles shortcut HUD like keywords do? If so, kudos.

Will it actually be so? The ability to code in 2014 far more improved from what we had a decade ago. So the idea of bundled apps being more difficult might not be valid as a reason not to attempt it.

I don't think it is backwards buying Avid, Avid has a very successful hardware range that compliments Apple's Logic and Final Cut Pro sofware..

What does make sense apart from Avid is Da Vince Resolve, as a replacement for Color and Shake, a node based system to round trip from FCP X, for more complex effects...

The day will come and hopefully soon we forget the days when After Effects was not part of FCP X...

On the subject of After Effects, with it being subscription based, and in my case the subs are charged in US Dollars, thus making it a really expensive app, how much longer can this not be part of FCP X?

Will just updating the single app Final Cut Pro fix the problems without going to the market and buying more companies? Apple bought Beats, why? Apple have never revealed why.

Buy it, and keep the software and hardware apart but compatible, allowing for expansion of hardware under the Apple banner..

What magic potion does Avid have that allows for multi user at the same time and FCP X does not have this?

I will only reply to the last part of your question.

Media Composer software has specific features that allow you to lock files in bins and to enable multiple editors to access the same project file. This means an editor can lock part of a sequence, enabling other editors to work on the part that is not locked. So two or more editors can each work on different parts of a timeline, but they never can work on the same parts at the same time (that would be quite ridiculous).

However, to allow this level of project sharing in Avid the software also needs to run on an ISIS or Unity network. This is an expensive shared storage system that uses the Avid File System (AFS) protocol. Without a dedicated AFS shared storage system, project sharing in Avid is impossible. Some SANs such as EditShare and Terrablock can emulate Unity project sharing, but they are not cheap either.

With FCP X you can have multiple editors work on a Project: split up the Project, let each editor work on his specific part and assemble the Project again. In Avid different editors can work on separate parts of the same project at the same time but you have to spend a minimum of 40.000 dollar on dedicated hardware to make this possible. Of course you get a decent shared storage system on top of this, but that's not what everyone really needs. The final result is the same.

- Ronny

Thanks Ronny, that helps understand maybe why Apple has not bought Avid. No problems here, was interested in why Apple with all the money has not bought rival systems..
