It would be nice to see plugins managed in the App Store. Though I'd want a way to separate them from Apps. I don't see it happening soon though. FXFactory is a good example though of what you can do with that idea.

I think you may be misunderstanding "extensions" or maybe not, little unclear. Extensions are not plug-ins, nor separate app. They are separate strings of code added to existing "containing" apps that allow another app (hosting) to take advantage of a feature without having to go back and forth between the apps.

Quote…"
I for one would prefer to have all my plugins managed via the App Store. I have installers all over the place and it would be easier on my mind to go with the App Store model that iOS made popular. I believe the extensions approach requires an app bundle. , and This may be part of the mechanism that will allow effects/plugins to be purchased and centrally redownloaded the same way apps are."

Extensions have to be written in the "containing" app and made available in the "hosting app". Apple is providing the framework to allow this, but there are definite restrictions, including you cannot write an extensions only app. There are other restrictions with resources, processor time etc…
What extensions allow is to be able to take advantage of a small part of the containing apps features while still in a different app. In other words, if you needed to make a modification to a Motion effect while in FCPX, via extensions, you could say add X positioning parameter to an effect your using. So instead of having to open in Motion, add X positioning, publish, go back to FCPX, replace the old effect with the enhanced effect you just created, you just use extensions in FCX and go your merry way with editing. Motion would never open.
Sounds pretty cool to me. I think the next update to Apple Pro Apps will see alignment with Yosemite incorporating these types of features.
While I like the simplicity of the App Store, I find it to be a huge jumbled mess and very difficult to compare between various similar apps. Give me tabs in the store please. Now the only way is to drag and drop apps into Safari to do side by side comparison. Also what's with the small type. No one over 25 allowed to work @ apple web design? Sorry pet peeve.
Hope this helps, Greg

I've tried the new iMovie just to get the feeling of what we can expect from the next FCPX release. What we'll definitely get is an even more beautiful user interface. I hope to at least get color coding of timeline clips, and customizable UI like in Logic Pro X. But my absolute main things are an audio mixer, and improved roles.

So, if I get it right Photos app could with the help of extensions become better than Aperture? It depends on how many plug ins you will choose to install?

I thought for sure we'd see an update on Tuesday or at the latest today. Heck, even Apple's own FCPX page looks outdated compared to the rest of the site's revamp.

It would be great to see an update here quickly. BTW, They redesigned the page for 10.1 update to confirm to the new design standards of their site. Have you seen it?

Follow the same structure of the Yosemite.

Hopefully they will add some more In Action soon.

If it had been necessary for compatibility with Yosemite, then yes. We saw plenty of apps updated last week for Yosemite. But since 10.1.3 seems to be running fine on 10.10...

In a way it's a good thing. If we don't need a compatibility update, then there's more chance that 10.1.4 will be something more substantial.

That said, I think we're still a ways away from release.

See my chart here for guestimated timelines-

There are major issues with Motion and Compressor, minor issues with FCPX and Yosemite being reported. I'd not say it was 10.10 compatible just yet.

Which problems are you encountering, Ben? In Compressor and Motion?

Thanks,

My screen blanking out in FCPX and Motion from time to time. I know two others who have their screen flicker in a similar manner. Compressor hangs up exporting to social media sites. Motion crashes often, especially with more than a couple of emitters and animated replicators. mObject is playing hell on my Motion projects. There's more, I don't list them, but I've seen enough of other forums to know that the pro apps are not totally clear of issues due to Yosemite. LPX has a string of annoying issues suddenly, also.

Only advantage of being stuck back on 10.1.1. All this stuff will likely be sorted by the time I can update in about a month. ;)

I've been doing Online checks of my edits in Resolve the last few weeks for the colourists, and the playback performance for the native RED material is really pretty wonderful.

Even if 10.1.4 isn't a feature release, I very much hope Apple has been able to slip in the 3rd party GPU decoding that Resolve has had since January, and Premier has had since June.

Some more granularity for handling these formats would be very welcome. Right now we have "Best Quality" and "Better Performance". "Best Quality" tries to play back undebayered RED, which would be tough even if we were leveraging both the D700s, but "Better Performance" is 1/4 debayer, and also means if you have any 1080 graphics elements in the Project, they get degraded too.

So, like with Resolve, some better handling of RAW formats for mixed media sequences would be great. Cause my sequences look and play back so much better in Resolve then they do in X.

They should in a way play back better in Resolve considering what it's supposed to be doing! But yes, they have the best Red workflow between the big 3, (PP and Avid being the other two) just in the fact that you can transcode proxies while you are working and switch back and forth with a switch. PP you have to relink and resize, unless CC2014 has finally figured that out.

This week would be the earliest we'd see a feature release based on past updates, but the range is pretty wide-

10.0.0-10.0.1 91 DAYS
10.0.2-10.0.3 76 DAYS
10.0.5-10.0.6 134 DAYS
10.0.9-10.1.0 148 DAYS
10.1.1-10.1.2 162 DAYS

A release today would match the 76 days of 10.0.3.

The average of those intervals is 122 days, which would mean a release of December 19th.

The longest feature release interval (and the most recent) for 10.1.2 was 162 days. That would put it into next year at January 28th.

I'm hopeful we'll see something this year, and since FCP X isn't waiting on the release of any new hardware like the MacPro- maybe it won't be quite so far into December.
