In FCPX the timeline always zooms in or out around the playhead, so your playhead never gets lost. This has been in the app from day 1. No need for a scrolling timeline for this.
The only exception to this is when you use the skimmer and you place it on a different spot than the playhead. In this case the timeline zooms in or out around the skimmer and the playhead stays exactly where it was, allowing you to instantly go back to the frame you were on before zooming in or out with the skimmer.

So soft-selecting the top-level video (the layer that you actually see), so that you don't need to manually select clips to adjust transformation, colour, crop, or effects in the inspector pane isn't useful....
Audio is an entirely other problem, since you can be hearing dozens of lanes of audio simultaneously. Exactly what audio lane would the ball default to??

I was really hoping that allowing the library to be stored anywhere would allow me to access projects over the network. Really frustrated by this one. We don't have the budget for a big fancy SAN and can edit most things quite happily over the network using disk images if absolutely needed. But you can't share media in a disk image because only one person at a time can access it.
I guess more feedback to Apple is required here.

I have a few events which serve no other purpose other than to store commonly used items. For example my sound effects library is its own event. This way it stays separate and clean and I don't have to reimport the entire library for each event. Will this be a problem when upgrading to Libraries? For example, if I have a Sound Effects Library will I be able to use files from it in another event? And will used sounds copy to the active event so that they may be archived properly as a stand-alone library with zero missing files? This is a question that is very important to me.

I just experimented with this. If you have a separate library for SFX, when you drag the audio file into another library FCPX will alert you to the fact that you are copying the file from one library into another -- Unless it's linked to external media in this case a copy is not made.

With the new library structure of fcpx this could be a good 'always on' replacement for you.

Sir David Abraham, can I just, say, open the SFX library, drag a file directly from a folder/keyword collection in there to the timeline of a different Library/Event/Project and get that warning? I don't want to drag it to another event first otherwise that would slow me down immensely. I would want a copy made in every instance so that the Library can be a self-contained unit with all of the files it needs.

yes exactly, though it will give you the alert every time.
As of now it will put in the same event as the -project-. So if you had say two events in the target library, one for "clips" and the other for "projects" there doesn't appear to be a way to have it default to the "clips" event.

You are in luck, I just made a playlist with all of my goat sex SFX and it worked like a charm!
I'm not a fan of iTunes either, but once you get it set up the way you like, you don't have to bother with it.
You can make playlists for every category you want, then to search in FCP X, you just select whatever playlist you want IE "Gunfire" and then it will only list search results from within that playlist. This has worked well for me and it may not be for everyone.

You are correct. When you drag clips from a different Library onto your current Project timeline it is quite logical that the media will be added to the Event to which the Project belongs. If you want the media to be added to a different Event than the Event to which the Project belongs: just drag the clips from the different Library into this Event and not onto the current Project timeline.
No matter in which Event of the Library the clips are stored the Library will always be a self-contained unit with all the files it needs, and any Projects in the Library will be able to use any clips inside any Event in the Library.

But the whole display is black. Not like the thunderbolt displays now, that only have black on the frame of the display and the rest is silver. The whole thing is black.

Exactly what's new? I've been seeing / using those status indicators for a long time….

What IS new in 10.1 is that now you have a Reveal In Finder button under the Media Representations. Select a clip in the Timeline and go to Inspector > Info. Under Available Media press the Reveal in Finder button and your original file will be opened in Finder. A very welcome addition for anyone who has modified the name of a clip in FCPX and wants to find the actual media file (which has kept its original name) back on the drive. In 10.0.9 you could only do this in the Event Browser.

I'm working on a large Multicam job and the 10.1 Multicam enhancements would probably make it much easier to finish. Plus the size of the Event and # of Projects are making it a bit unwieldy. 10.1 is seemingly giving people a boost in responsiveness. I'd like that.
I know upgrading in the middle of a job isn't recommended, but since this job will probably drag on thru mid-January, I figure I'll end up upgrading AT SOME POINT while this job is still going, so why not now.

The old version is in it's own folder in Applications, and I log in to a different user. So far so good.
