Sharpening within Neat works very well, there are defaults that can be applied and you can control the amount of sharpening manually for a more refined result. I don't bother to use any extra.

That sucks but we still have other denoiser that work great.

You can get a demo version - just mail the guys at Neat. I did, they sent a link, it worked...

Thanks for all the info Jason.

I emailed them to see if I can get the FCPX demo. I have a music video shot in a club that has serious noise. If Neat can sort it out then I'll buy it for sure.

Ok, I emailed Neat Video, and I got an email back from Vlad almost instantly with a link to the FCPX download demo. The email also had all of the info needed to install the program and some troubleshooting tips - great attention to detail.

I'm very impressed with the level of service with Neat Video and their level of professionalism so far (especially bearing in mind this is on a Saturday)!

I ran the Neat Video filter on a couple of clips that were shot in a very dark nightclub at 6400 ISO. The original clips were shot to get an idea of the ambient light in the club before the real shoot, so they were never intended to be used for a real video edit and were totally unusable. However they cleaned up surprisingly well with the Neat Video filter.

These were extreme cases though; I'm going to have to run a couple of real world tests on footage that could be potentially savaged with noise reduction.

I did run into one small issue where FCPX 'greyed' out some controls and refused to close down after running a test. This issue was noted in Vlad's email to me, and the solution (CMD-Q to close it and then reopen the app to restore functionality) worked as explained in the email.

So far Neat Video looks like an amazing program run by people with great attention to detail!

Demo version of the plugin for FCPX can be downloaded using this link:
Code:
http://www.neatvideo.com/files3/fcmd/NeatVideoFC.3.1.3.Intel.pkg.dmg

Important Notes:

I. This is a release candidate version of the plug-in, which
means it may be not as stable and reliable as a release version
(for example v3.1). Use this version only for testing and do not
run it on production machines to avoid possible data loss due to
any crashes, hangs, etc.

II. Installation and use:

1. Download the dmg installer above
Double-click the downloaded dmg file to mount it

In the mounted volume, double-click NeatVideoFC.Intel.pkg to
start the installer and then follow the wizard to complete the installation process.
You may be prompted to enter Name / Password of the OSX
administrator account to install the software.

2. Start FCP X, use the panel Effects > Neat Video > Reduce
Noise to add Neat Video's Reduce Noise effect to the clip

3. Go to Inspector > Video > Effects > Reduce Noise and use the "Options window"
popup menu to open the main window of the plug-in (in older versions of FCP,
it opens via the "Options" button).

4. Then proceed according to the regular workflow described in the user guide.

III.When used in FCP X, the following issues may arise with this
release candidate version of the plug-in and with the current
version of FCP X (10.0.4):

- If the clip where Neat Video is applied to is located in
non-main timeline in an event (not project but event), the
filter may not work. The problem is caused by a bug in FCP X
(in version 10.0.4): FCP X does not provide all frames
requires to conduct temporal processing. We are contacting
Apple to fix this bug in FCP X. Until it is fixed, the
workaround is to apply Neat Video in main timeline only or in
a project instead of an event.

- FCP X with enabled skimming and background rendering may be
slower to respond to user actions when a
computationally-intensive filter (such as Neat Video) is added
to the project. Please consider disabling skimming and/or
background rendering in FCP X Preferences or temporarily
disabling Neat Video (in the panel Inspector > Video > Effects
Reduce Noise) when not adjusting Neat Video's settings.

- On systems with CUDA-enabled video cards, Neat Video plug-in
may try to use CUDA to speed up processing and in some cases
during the first start of FCP X, the plug-in may give an error
indicating a lack of free GPU memory. Please restart FCP X in
such a situation, this may help to resolve the problem.
Alternatively, disable use of GPU in Neat Video's Preferences:
open the main window of the plug-in using the "Options window"
popup menu, go to menu Tools > Preferences > Performance and
select to use CPU only.
