Not sure if this is a trailer or a complete film.
Only 10 minutes but heavy on brutality & vengeance.
At first I was thinking, man this is dark, turn off the vignette.
The color treatment really helps to create the feel...

see what you think

Some nice film techniques in this one, as well as epic CGI sweeping vistas.

When you go see it, make sure you wear your painted on 6pack

(I know I will)

Still here?
Ok, just to freshen your palate a comedy trailer that mocks trailers!

One of my favorite youtube channels is Honest Trailers

Here they skewer JJ Abrams Star Trek

hmm... do you think they'll mention the Lens Flares?

This will be an odd addition to our thread. To fully understand what I'm getting at, you'll have to see the entire film (which I recommend). However, this trailer is extremely misleading, in that it makes the film seem like a taught action thriller, when in fact it's something completely different. Some might say they mis-marketed the movie thus obscuring it from the audiences that could have been drawn to it. Also they destroyed their word of mouth marketing because anyone who went to see the movie this trailer presents would come away disappointed. The actual film is much deeper & more fulfilling than the one the trailer portrays.

This misdirection is a form of bait & switch that I think fell flat.

I thought that I would post this one. Love the idea of artists and architects in a war zone ;-) Makes a pleasant change from the usual shoot em up and chop off their heads war movie. The editing for the trailer... It is hard to explain but the editing looks a little slow. It is edited the way an overweight person moves. There is the movement and there are the ripples. If you know what I mean.

But every thing speeds and gets tighter when things become critical. If trailer editing is about conveying a mood for a film I could imagine that this one is pretty close to the mark.

Great post, thanks Paurray. As you say, the slow build works perfectly here, we're drawn in completely. Interesting use of the wooden crates for the titles (which we see the nazis using to abscond art), the music is perfect (anyone know the song?), the subject is entirely compelling, as is the dialogue & delivery. Of course we have the subtle juxtaposition of the awkward & unlikely prospect of the nebbish stumbling blindly into harm's way, contrasted with impending doom in action sequences (again, toned down from the regular Hollywood fare), with the beautiful contrast of humorous breaks. The cinematography, lighting & color all look flawless. Adding all these components up results in the HookFactor being very high. Can't wait to see this one.

Hi TrixTrax cool to get your angle on this. I was just about to post another trailer. It really is crazy how diverse this stuff gets! Have to love the Danish people. Such a small country and they some how succeed time and time again in making crazy films. There is not one single explosion in this trailer. We hear a gun shot once and that is it. Layers of emotions on top of layers of emotions. Wow and my instinct tells me that the film is better than the trailer!!!

Wow, yes that's powerful. Very moving. And realistic. I was choked up, in under 2 minutes. Again, one you feel you just have to see.

Gotta love the framing when we hear the shot, to the lone tiny ship on the sea... title. Like you said, beyond the trailer, you can tell... that film's art.

Aww.. now you make me feel all embarrassed about posting this one. The complete opposite, but it kind of looks like fun conceptually, with the new spin on the angel of death.

Don't forever brand me as lowbrow for this one... hehe

How low can you go :P

It looks so shit that it might just be good :silly:

What I actually find intriguing about this trailer is that somehow there seems to be a blurred line between “fact” and “fiction” i.e. it looks as if the the old burnt out author and the new up and coming guy actually do battle in the story within the story, if you get what I mean!?!

What an exciting time for movies. Technology & creativity are both matching each other's advances in a surreal dance of delight. The Lord of War trailer was compelling, with another great component I don't think we've explored enough; the great line. The pause in the visual to deliver a quintessential turn of phrase, shows why dialogue is still more important than action, it's the true content. Ironically, even in a film about war, the pen is still mightier than the sword.

"What do you know about guns?"

"I know which end I'd rather be on."

But where the creative artistic flare really flourishes is in the opening sequence you've shared. The camera technology & VFX combination is captivating, the culmination chilling. The opening shot with a high crane coming down to the factory worker's level then ultimately diving right into the machine, brilliant. The shot they chose for the still, with him looking down the shell of the bullet casing, with the fingerprints in clear detail, gorgeous. All in all, high hook factor, I gotta say 8.7, not that this kind of film hasn't been made before, but the cutting, creative visual concepts, & snappy dialogue give me the urge to sit thru another Cage flick, despite previous debacles. The craziest aspect of watching this trailer is that even though I saw the film back in 06, the promo makes me want to see it again, or more accurately, the trailer supplants my memories of the film with reintroduced hype. Previous incarnations on weapons trade include the sizzling Strapped, directed by Forest Whitaker, highly recommend it.

As for the Sci-Fi writer's spoof: not sure all those jokes will work in an extended play (the transvestite hero wears thin within the length of the trailer!) But the kid sells his role with wide-eyed innocence & the actor playing the plagiarist (Jermaine Clement from the hilarious HBO offering Flight of the Conchords) is an extremely entertaining individual. I wouldn't mind seeing that film either...

Here is yet another approach to a trailer. It is mad, it a trailer for a film about a film. So what are you going to do. Show clips from the original film or show some grey haired guys and girls with gold rimmed glasses talking about the film.

I have not seen this one but seeing as how "The Shining" is one of my all time favourites… I have by the way heard great things about the film, Room 237.

It seems to be to me to be a very sensible approach, indeed :-)

On a side note here is also an amazing making of "The Shining"

The trailer is clever & powerful, on the first viewing, but in retrospect it leaves an unpleasant aftertaste for me. All he's really doing is mimicking the famous scene Kubrick created with a mildly amusing substitution. Of course it's perfectly executed, as all the best jokes are, but it's still far from original. The genius of Kubrick is in his originality, so if we're going to examine his work or propose hidden messages then we need to at least be original or the homage seems to be merely riding his coattails.

Continuing in the vein of originality...

I must confess my opinion on this particular film is slightly tainted since the entire premise & most probably the first time this particular theory was clearly articulated, appeared in an almost identical film which appeared without a tenth of the fanfare, over a year earlier.

Absolutely love & celebrate creative originality, vehemently despise blatant copycat idea ripoffs.

PS: The "Making Of" was great. Thanks

I think that it is important to put things in context. The film is a film about a film. There are different films critics who apparently do not appear once in front of the camera. (Have not seen it, yet) All you get to see are excerpts from Kubericks films. The Critics, all have wildly differing opinions which are probably so off the wall that you end up wondering what film they are talking about.

For me the trailer makes sense!

I am guessing that it is the only shot that was filmed extra for the film or rather the trailer!!!

Further I think that it is interesting in the context of a thread about trailers.

I can not think of any other trailer that consists of one shot! :cheer:

If nothing were original then there would be no such thing as copyright, patents, or plagiarism.

Yes, one shot for a trailer is a unique idea I can't recall ever previously being deployed.

Copyrights, etc, are simply new configurations of stuff done before. Look up a short film (about filmmaking and creative content) called "Pollinate: Chain Reaction". No, there is no genuinely brand new never done before content, just new ways of arranging and presenting. But the subject is very open to interpretation, thus a continuing would be fruitless, save giving it it's own thread. Just saying.

I would like to take the opportunity to quote one of my favourite Media Gurus, Kurt Vonnegut. The room 237 trailer is on the edge one way or the other and that is why it gets a mention!

"I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center."

Also like the way the time on the VCR blinks 12 noon :woohoo:

Love to see someone try "impossible to really copyright because nothing is new" argument in a court of law.

So, I guess people who believe this ideology, don't mind when you ripoff their stuff?

Hope this is creative enough :P

Have to love the camera work and the editing.

That first shot that goes on for ever and then all those fleeting edits that get pretty abstract fast!

Making of, of sorts here.
