Wow, that one's rather impressive I must say. AND, they've got the massive horn sound! (as mentioned in the Honest Trailer of Inception above)

Here I was just coming to post what I thought looked like a pretty good action flick, but now I feel embarrassed to show it compared to yours. The effect of the tidal wave of humans running at you is really something. Waves, bridges, mountains of scrambling bodies like driver ants, very original & realistic looking. Love the way it starts with average family (well, if you can call Brad Pitt average), mundane commute, cute children's game, then suddenly the Zombie Apocalypse from hell with the lid off!

Huge HookFactor, I give it a 9.

Really feeling kind of sheepish about posting mine now, it seems so lackluster...

The most unorthodox trailer I have seen in a long long time:

Nearly 6 minutes long. 3 songs. Multiple stories. No narration; rather a collection of eclectic sound bites from the movie.

But then again this is an unorthodox movie; 3 directors, 3 hours. Multiple stories with actors appearing again and again as unrecognizably different characters in different times (sometimes as different genders - much like one of the directors Lana Wachowski).

Do you want to see this movie after watching this trailer? I did. I have rarely watched a trailer more than once, but I watched this many times.

Totally amazing.

Yes, Simon, I'd have to agree, the Cloud Atlas trailer is the longest & most out of the box in its unconventionality, thus it's extremely mysterious & compelling. It makes you want to see it, at least a HF9.

Unfortunately at 3 hours, the film for me was a bit of a disappointment. Not because of its length, but because it wasn't as mysterious & enchanting as the trailer. It's probably a bit cliche for people to say the movie wasn't as good as the trailer, but this one promises, dare I say it, a great spiritual experience. Alas, it was more of a tedious, predictable, hippy's metaphysical class in new-age mysticism. Oh sure, I get it, we've abandoned spiritual institutions or traditions in the West, so we grasp at anything that's promoted as spiritual "truth" now, especially if Tom Hanks is in it, & as long as no one mentions that it's religious. But all that illogical reincarnation gobbledegook aside, I just didn't feel the story engaged me, not for that length of time. The trailer, absolutely, but stretched out over 3 hours & countless eons, epochs & ages of time, man, I felt like I'd aged several lifetimes by the time it was thru.

Now, of course, I have to apologize, sorry if I offended anyone. This is because many people take these things so seriously, it actually has become their "religious experience," so they become deeply offended, or want to start a jihad or some crusade against any nay-sayers.

So, suffice it to say, I applaud the grandiose ambitious project that this set out to be, but merely felt somewhat unsatisfied in its delivery.

Again, as I always say - everything begins with the script. Just to clarify, I'm not picking on your version of spirituality, I've said the same things about my disappointment with Lincoln & ZeroDark30.

Great trailer though.

Looks like the Good Day To Die Hard marketing campaign is seizing people's attention so effectively that it's difficult to concentrate on driving...

Feeling a bit reluctant to even post this one. It just came out... well, I will but with a warning. This trailer is Rated R for extreme violence (I can't even remember a trailer being Rated R). Anyway, you've been warned...

But you have to admit.. it's intriguing ... thus a substantial HookFactor rating of 7.9

Ugh. James McAvoy. I just cant watch anything with him in it. Why is he always either pasty faced or sweaty? Why is he always shouting? Why is he always miscast as some sort of tough guy?

Though I do love everything by Danny Boyle. What a conundrum.

A movie directed by Michael Bay starring James McAvoy and Shia LaBeouf as two tough guys. Thats my nightmare.

I dont know man...it sort of depends on the length of the movie, and the format its presented in. I can always flick over a TV channel, so a fleeting glimpse of the offending pasty faced tough guy would only momentarily boil my blood for a couple of seconds. Maybe give me indigestion.

But a long movie in a cinema....well, that could be off the scale....

Incidentally the trailer looks very very good. Definitely piqued my interest. I wonder will the movie live up to premise. Vincent Cassell is always interesting.

I think I might have to force myself to watch it. Take a couple of valiums and antacids first though....

Indeed, tough guys can't be pasty, that just doesn't work. By law, don't they have to be swarthy?

Torture is sure big in films now. We had the fingernails thing in Syriana, now again here. But that final shot is a bit much. I mean, how can you even retain the power of speech without a brain? Well, unless you're in politics.

Too bad, looks like our new Die Hard movie is being universally panned. Don't worry, it'll still make money. Apparently they're planning on making at least 12 of them...

This one starts slow then builds to a frenetic pace. The flash cuts, impact transitions & sound effects are.... too much? or just right?

Well, how about some classic trailers from older movies then.

Some trailers dont really give away the premise of the story, keeping it a secret, but rather set up the story. Here is a great one from the movie Unbreakable, which nicely protected any notion of the twists to come:

This was back when M. Night Shayalamans name was not mud, and he was making interesting movies. You can see his artistic vision is captured effectively is this trailer.

How about this classic trailer for the original Mission Impossible movie. This is an effective action movie montage; it makes good use of the Mission Impossible tropes; the recognizable music, and the fuse imagery. The whole trailer is set to the beat of the music and the lit fuse acts as a countdown to the end. This sort of trailer necessarily has lots of little spoilers (its an action movie so they have to show it), but it also captures some of the signature camerawork of Brian DePalma (all the Dutch Angles and close ups). Don't you want to go and see this movie again?

Enjoyed those, thank you Simon. Quite a contrast between them. Perhaps a serious study could be done on the evolution of Movie Trailers over the span of the form. They've certainly transmogrified throughout the years.

While watching the M.Night (maybe it's Mid Night, hehe) trailer I was struck by the lengths of dramatic darkness he used. Not sure you could get away with that now. It's very effective, as is everything about that teaser. The music, sounds, titling, shards, & glimpses of mystery, all up our interest levels exponentially.

As for sounds, he creates all his own, eschewing stock (great quotes & craft insights at that link too).

One of his movies, The Village, is grossly underrated, I feel. There is a scene on a porch at nightfall with Joaquin Phoenix & a blind girl played by Ron Howard's daughter Bryce in her breakout performance (who names their daughter that?). That scene is, for a myriad of reasons one of my cinematic favorites, it's so gorgeous on many levels. Like most of M. Night's movies, this one also has a stellar twist completing the ending. Don't search for a spoiler if you're planning on watching it. Although, like all his movies, it made money, it's unfathomable why it scored so low (6.1 on IMDB, should be over 7).

The Mission Impossible trailer is a real roller-coaster thrill-ride, though some of the action bordering on cartoonish implausibility. Perhaps the action trailer has not changed so much over the years. Though, of course the Willis type contain the obligatory wisecracks, which I think started with the Bond franchise. Which, like the MI syndicate, is fortunate to have a well established musical theme to build on. There's definitely something substantial about riding that old familiar wave of musical excitement which triggers years of visceral memories. The problem with the action genre is that it must continually outdo itself, thus the trailers need to compress more explosive adrenalin pumping mayhem into each second. That's a very tough task master to serve.

Ahh... well written dialogue... remember that?

Speaking of... M.Night was Hollywood's highest paid screenwriter. (5 mil for Signs)
