Burn DVD was created by Brad Parsons
I cannot get FCP to burn a DVD. It constantly stops at 66%. Doesn't matter if I use a custom background or non at all. It constantly locks up. I have got it to burn an image a couple times but when I burn that to a disc it won't play. No-one here probably even used DVD's but why is the feature available if it doesn't work? Seems it hasn't worked for years.

I used to make DVDs all the time, but I was so used to the control you get with DVD Studio Pro that I never changed my workflow, aside from doing the edit in FCPX and exporting ProRes.
Might try burning one at home just to see if I can. Are you seeing any errors, or does it just fail silently?

It freezes at 66% every time. I have burned DVD's before but maybe never with the M1 processor. Also, I used to use DVD Studio as well. One of the other big mistakes by Apple, not supporting that wonderful program a little longer and giving us Blu-ray authoring. What can we do? They control it.

I seem to recall seeing a trick on the Apple FCP discussion group that when it fails at this 66% it's because it can't launch the Create Disc app. Before exporting from FCP, manually launch /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/Contents/EmbeddedApps/Create Disc.app
You'll need to right-click and choose Show Package Contents for both FCP and CompressorKit.bundle to navigate further. If it works you can drag the Create Disc.app to your Dock.

F C P is an absolute P I G when it comes to creating discs. I use Toast daily for DVD/BRD projects.
You can spend hours trying to troubleshoot this kink orrrrrrrr... punt the file somewhere. Send me the link to download it and I'll kick back an ISO file that'll work with better quality. Standard encodes are 4.0 mbps but I run all mine at 9.0 mbps. (Blurays get boosted from standard 16 mbps to 26 mbps bitrate and they are gorgeous.)

Do a forum search using keyword TOAST by user VTC. I've posted numerous screeds about creating discs. Here's but one of them:

I have looked at Toast numerous times but have read so many negative reviews I have shied from using it. I was looking at Toast 20 Pro. Does it work? I still love making DVD's for any of my events.

Wanted to be sure you received my message. Thank you. I've looked at Toast numerous times but the reviews were always terrible. I decided not to waste my money. If you believe it is a good program I would give it a try. However, it is on version 20 now and not sure if that version is any good. I probably need 20 to work on my M-1 Mac mini.

They offer a trial? Been using Toast since 7 or 8 and there's really not much real difference. Currently using 15. Since I made the mods I described in earlier rants about its cheesy menu graphics and offerings I see no need to grab a later / current version.

VTC, Thanks for sharing your "hacks" for Toast.
In case people are looking for other alternatives, there are a couple of free applications for making DVDs (but not BDs):
Burn
burn-osx.sourceforge.io/Pages/English/home.html
Burn can include some menus and you can download additional templates or make your own.
DVDStyler
www.dvdstyler.org/en/
DVDStyler can make DVDs with more elaborate menus and layouts. It is customizable.
I don't know anything for macOS besides Toast that can make BDs...

It's easy to use but yell if you have any problems.
The trick I use the most is setting DELETE CONVERSION CONTENTS to NEVER, under Storage in preferences. You save an ISO image and then check that with DVD Player or VLC. After you make that one ISO file you can modify chapters or any title or graphics and create a new ISO file in a couple of minutes as long as the CONVERTED CONTENTS remains in the Roxio Converted Items folder. If you swap out or add new video elements then it has to make a new file m2v & aac files.
