I agree with you guys, I was disappointed when i saw that it was the "move the folder alias into the root folder trick". Definitely not how i thought Apple would implement this feature.

Often Ripple does share the tricks to do "new" stuff that is not documented by Apple, but i really was hoping for a better method when I finally saw the Ripple Training YouTube channel updated and showing that video.

I agree......it is truly shocking that someone at Apple thought that this counted as a feature add......when it is a bit of a Duct-Taped approach. It not a feature, it's a hack, and a poor one at that. I'm glad it's possible.....but not thrilled that the quality control is willing to list that as a feature update.

It is actually adding back a function we had before the 10.3 update. This is how it always was, stopped working with 10.3, is working again with 10.3.2.

I guess the mention in release notes was intended for those people that used it previously and complained about it being broken. I didn't know about this functionality before but now I'm going to start using it to implement some sound effects libraries.

Use the feedback link in FCPX to let them know your thoughts about this. They do read our feedback.

Yes and no ...

In many ways ... it is not 'working again' ... they have offered up a workaround. They have not restored the feature as it existed or functioned prior to v10.3.

The function has been 'added back' only partially in a sense. Before, one only had to drag-n-drop a folder from the Finder to the sidebar .... for audio files (or image files which still has not been restored) ... to have direct access to that media without resorting to the import process or hacking a folder alias in the System Library folder. Although the end result may be similar, the path to get there is not ideal or as simple as it once was. It need not be so convoluted.

Software development is supposed to simplify the task at hand. Not make the process more difficult. This method is a step backwards or at least a drastic sidestep.

While I have the utmost respect and appreciation for the FCP X team, this issue is rather annoying and goes against the grain for most other facets of FCP X.

Considering they re-wrote the GUI from scratch, I'd give it an update to two, we'll have it back like before. I'm sure this is temporary until the new GUI gets all of its bugs worked out.

Hello expert community. I am just getting started with FCP and wanting to keep things organized from the get go, I am having trouble getting FCP to NOT display deleted media files from original location in the Photos and Audio sidebar iTunes import. As you can see in my screenshot, the file "first testing project" was an exported movie that landed in the /Users/davidhamadeh/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Home videos folder.
Even though I deleted that file, it persists in FCP sidebar. How can I purge it from FCP or hide deleted media. I fear with several testing files and media in and out this would become a very cluttered screen in FCP showing a big mix of available as well as unavailable files to use.

Many thanks in advance.

Hey David,
How did you delete it? If you deleted the project from the browser, that doesn't mean the exported movie to iTunes would be deleted. That would be considered a media item inside the iTunes library. I'm not even sure if iTunes items could be deleted from FCPX either.

Also, if you deleted the item from within iTunes, there is an option to move it to the trash. If you deleted the item from the path shown and didn't delete the record in iTunes, it could still be visible (?).

I'd suggest opening iTunes and deleting it there and removing it from the library when the window pops up.

Just wanted to add my ++++++ to this. Finally figured out what had happened to the missing Sound/Audio libraries in 10.3 after upgrading, discovered how to get them back into FCPX, and agree that with dozens of folders of loops, stingers, music beds, etc., the new interface is terrible.

Hopefully Apple can make changing content within these libraries simple, intuitive (and not at root level), plus make the selection interface one heck of a lot better. Also need to be sure we can add a Music folder to the interface without having to put things into iTunes so that when the tracks/clips are added to a project they are automatically set to Music and not Effects the way they are now. I have filed feedback as well, but hopefully anyone with direct contact can also make the suggestions.

I had posted about this on Apple Discussions, but surprisingly nobody there thought it was an issue --- and also thought I was crazy for trying to do audio/music within FCPX. With Soundtrack Pro pretty useless now and Logic overkill for short projects (commercials, etc.), really hoping the recent improved versions of FCPX could bring back some of the audio editing capabilities and ease of use we used to have in ST-Pro, especially like back in FCP-7. Obviously working with music elements libraries is a critical part of that.
