FCPX on iPad Pro

I understand what you're saying ButchM, but if you think an iPad Pro would need to run full applications, then it wouldn't be an iPad, it would be a touchscreen Mac- which which opens up a whole other can of worms around OS X and UI touch target sizes.

An iPad Pro doesn't have to be a pro product for everyone to qualify. A MacBookPro wouldn't be a good professional computer for some use cases- But with its emphasis on larger screen sizes and beefier internals, that's the distinction Apple has chosen to make with it's laptops.

For now, the size and both touch and stylus input enhancements of the iPad are what separate it from the rest of the line. As I said, I'll be curious to see what happens if that touchscreen latency and stylus support comes to the rest of the lineup. At that time, the distinction may not be so clear. But then again by that point they may well have found other ways to distinguish it from the Mini and the Air- if this is meant to be Apple's goal with the iPad Pro.

Really doesn't matter to me if you would consider an iPad running OS X is no longer an iPad. That's not the issue. ... I would prefer an independently capable tablet that will run OS X. THAT device would be a truly professional solution for the masses of any endeavor. Not a niche few by comparison.

Like I pointed out earlier, the current Macbook is nearly there ... it would only require a touch screen and OS X brought up to speed. (Something we have both pointed out previously) It's not like the hardware tech doesn't already exist.

You may reference the resulting device in any manner you choose ... I am more interested if the overall capabilities can meet the demands of a true workflow enhancement. I wouldn't be offended if Apple, or you, didn't care to classify the resulting device as an iPad. I would only be concerned if they chose to label the device as 'Pro' ... it could actually live up to the title in capabilities and results for a broad user base.

After all ... if Apple is to lead us into truly 'post PC era' ... the iPad is going to have to make larger strides than the addition of a low latency stylus in order to reach that goal.

DUET

ok, on my mini thats … a bit fiddly:

a 'handy' screen is handy for short sighted people like me, names of effects/titles are way too small! LOL And no, that video is no demo of SliceX = pic replacement, that's an actual recording, no v/fx ... :silly:

"...and probably not being able to do any video editing on this device short of what is filmed on the iPad and edited in iMovie for the iPad."

With the camera adapter, you can in fact edit video from your external camera. I do it all the time. I can also use my Apogee Quartet to mix in multichannel audio in a fully pro DAW, on my iPad. There are more advanced NLE's for iOS besides iMovie, also, which would surprise you how much you can get done.

Unfortunately the software problem is much harder than just bringing OS X "up to speed". It would involve a profound and deep re-architecting of the OS, the API system, the event model, programming guidelines, etc. Then programmers would have to re-write all the apps for the new model. It would be a years-long endeavor.

By contrast (as you said) the MacBook is almost there. In fact the current MacBook is about the same weight as the iPad Pro + keyboard (not sure on weight of keyboard). It is the same thickness as the original iPad. You can run the real version of FCP X on a MacBook today, not some watered-down future version. That is a device that is smaller in the X and Y dimensions than the iPad Pro. It remains to be seen what the iPad Pro true operational thickness is when equipped with the keyboard cover.

Within the near future we will probably have a MacBook which approaches the power of today's MacBook Pro. That would enable true pro-level work -- on a device about the size of an iPad Pro without requiring total redesign of the OS and applications.

Admittedly there are advantages to a touch-oriented true tablet device. But there's no easy way to get a touch-oriented version of OS X and all the updated touch-oriented apps. The basic question is should OS X be moved that way, or should iOS (and associated app development) be moved upward to handle more "pro" type scenarios. Microsoft tried to merge both into a single OS and it didn't work out well. What path Apple chooses will be interesting to see.

What I would like to see is a fcpx lite type of app. More than imovie though. The app creates a proxy version of the footage to keep file sizes down. You can do a rough edit with basic titling and effects if needed. The project file syncs over iCloud so you can open it in FCPX and have your project to continue with. You can still cut completely in the app, but with restrictions. Pass it over to my Mac to continue or complete.

It probably won't happen, but with the pencil it would make it easier to edit. If this happened, I would consider an iPad pro.

P.S. MacBook Pros are Pro devices, considering I earn my living on one cutting video, I would say that quailifies as Pro.

I just bought Duet today and used it to hook up my iPad Pro to my MBPr so I can use the 13" iPad Pro screen as a full screen programme/preview option. Works a treat!

Ben I am interested in your set up, would it be possible to show your set up, much like Mark Spencer has done with the bioneers article? I am sure it would help others, it sure would help me understand new workflow methods...Thanks
