What, specifically, technically, makes the MacBook Pro, not a pro level product?

I've used my MacBook Pro professionally for video editing, graphic design, Audio recording & mixing, DJing and sound cues for theatre. The results have been good and I have gotten paid. How is this not a Pro machine?

Would you buy a camera that did not have removable batteries? No, the same for media, if the camera had only fixed internal storage, this limits your ability to carry on working.

So why do allow this for what you say is a professional device? Why is the macbook pro hobbled to 1 fixed internal battery? This limits it ability to perform on set away from power. The previous iteration had slip in batteries, you charge a number, and you can work for days without recharging..

Upgrading RAM, this is also a factor, from the time I bought my first new mac, post 2013, I was able to get it exchanged from 4GB to 8GB RAM, as FCPX refused to work under 4GB, even though the Apple website confirmed 4GB as minimum.

The base 13inch model, mine, basic graphics, why not have this as the top of the line Macbook, why not in the pro range have top end graphics, then it the whole range has top end graphics, and the RAM and SSD are your only variables... www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/ why is Iris Pro graphics not standard across the entire range???

Why the 2 options for graphics? Apple knew that a large number of consumers would be buying the cheapest pro laptop to use with FCPX...

I live in Africa, where prices are through the roof, the basic 8GB 256GB SSD version, costs more here than the top of the line version in the US....more than 2.5x as much...

As I am not a technical person, I cannot converse on matters of a deep technical nature, I can only comment on what I have experienced, between 2 types of macbook pro, the old and the new...The older version had a way better sound card, way less tinny than this late 2013 version, a brighter display than this 2013 hunk of junk...My previous laptop had 2 batteries, RAM when it failed, was a 1 minute job to replace, when the fans went, I replaced them, easy, and I have had no formal hardware training...

The late 2013 and newer laptops are not truly professional grade..yes you can make money, you can make money on Alienware running a emulator of Mac OSX and FCPX...

Why does not being able to upgrade the RAM or remove the battery make the Macbook Pro unsuitable for professional tasks? I've managed extremely well to make money using mine without having to upgrade or remove either.

MsJustine,
You seem to just have a different definition for pro. Would it be awesome to be able to switch out RAM, hard drives, batteries. Of course it would. i don't know if that determines it being pro or not. I put 16 GB of RAM in my 2011 macbook pro, only to be told by an apple genius that the system only reads 8GB of it. Now, i am still curious if he was right about that or not...but if he was then i threw that money in the toilet. The current MacBook pros seem to only use 16gb of memory, and thats what they sell it with. also, apple doesn't charge a lot of money for RAM like they use to. so upgrading when buying the machine isn't all that bad. I have also had to have my machine worked on 4 times since i have had it since 2011....and i think i spent all of 200 bucks....they gave me a new battery for free, 2 times they covered the motherboard (due to a recall they had on it), fixed my charging port, given me a free charger, fixed the dents that have occurred in my use, and a whole new keyboard due to water being spilled on it. So, to some extent they take away the need for having to fix it yourself, cause they would rather you come in and have it operated on i guess. I guess they see it as you will be happy because they did most things for free and you might spend some money while in the store...who knows.

Also, if your video editing, the bottom of the line macbook pro isn't the best option...why didn't you get one with a video card? They don't name it pro because it's professional for video editors exclusively, they name it pro because it is probably pro for web designers, musicians, and other various professions. Any video editor will almost always need the most expensive machine they sell, especially if that is their only computer they work on. That way you can get more milage out of it instead of having to update it over the years.

sorry if my definition is different, I regard professional as more robust, more industrial than consumer grade, the same can be said of video cameras, the consumer grade camera is light, has many automatic features, where the professional cameras a different lenses, less automation, more features, to allow the professional to take shots that they determine to be the best shot.

I expect the same from my laptop, I could buy a macbook, without the pro suffix/moniker...That should have all the glue and solder Jony can stick in there..The macbook with the pro should have swap out batteries, replaceable solid state drives, RAM, I can think of a whole raft of places where swop out batteries, solid state drives would work, yet Apple has determined what is best for me, and I frankly resent that...

I have a choice of what brand gas I put in my car, what brand tyre I use, what grade oil I use, I over-rule my gps all the time, so why do we as professionals allow Apple to determine for out business what is best..Apple know nothing about you, or me, or anyone's business...

That is the crux, allowing Apple to determine what they think is best when they have no idea in the first place....end of conversation!!!

vice versa:
ONLY the huge surface of solidity, by glueing, gives a filigree structure as a MBpro the firmness to survive in a rough enviroment - you rarely hear on a film-set "don't pick my laptop just with two fingers, it could bend!"

A 'hole' like a battery compartment destabilize it. No need to be a rocket scientist to understand that part of product design .... For me, they should/could grout mobile devices completely with some mysterious substance, which is tough but lightweighted...-

Didn't Apple once bought a patent for foam-aluminium? (Sir Ive, please, how do you pronounce ...? ;) )
Titanium-foam,… and if I remember some other rumors correctly , German car makers experiment with ceramic foams... Jony, aside visiting your prefered laser-cutters here in Munich, that's another good reason for a trip to Krautland ........

No not true about the whole, my previous macbook pro, had a very solid laptop, and was abused plenty and it lasted and lasted, way more than this precious hunk of silver junk retina 2013 macbook pro.

Jony is a great paper designer, no question about his talent, but no one questions his talent in heavy duty industrial design, there was no reason to discontinue the previous version, with the swap out battery, RAM, that was a tough old bird...

The decision was done for the number 1 client, the super boss of Apple, and no that is not Tim...Tim's boss calls the shots...

Sorry you do not see it the way I see it, I see great design on paper, yes this macbookpro should be a great laptop, the specs are ok, but in reality it is not a great laptop, and it was the best I could afford, we get ripped off here in the ex colonies..Exchange rates and price gouging, leave us little choice in the matter...

Being able to change RAM later as funds improve would have been great, to swop out 256 for a 1TB drive for a project, I would save for that, I could before, now some idiot at Apple thinks he knows better...I dont accept that, and I am somewhat sad that I am the only one speaking out about the poor design decisions....

People shouldn't strain themselves trying to figure out why the the new iPad is "Pro"- it is simply because it expands usability in several key areas vs the rest of the lineup.

1. Screen size- which does make a difference for a lot of applications, especially when you bring iOS's new multitasking into consideration. Also the reason this iPad has 4GB of RAM instead of the Air2's 2GB.
2. reduced touchscreen input latency- both for traditional touch input and most importantly for...
3. Stylus input- which allows for a dramatic improvement in it potential use as a Wacom replacement. I've already read some reviews saying that the reduced amount of air between the surface and the screen, as well as great low-latency when using the Pencil already make it a fairly attractive alternative, as long as you can live with the 12.9" display vs much larger Cintiqs. Plus, the iPad Pro screen's color accuracy and resolution is a huge step up over Wacom's panels.
4. Enhance keyboard tools and integration- though some of this is iOS9 wide.

Artists will undeniably benefit most from this product- I know I'll be taking a hard look at whether to sell my Cintiq and buy one of these (and have money left over for an AppleTV).

It's taken Apple a lot longer than I would have thought to bring more artist specific tools to the iPad. The point I'm most curious about is whether future Air's or Mini's will gain Pencil support.

That is Apple's scheme of naming things.

I disagree ... I tink Apple could have chosen a much more accurate moniker for this new iPad if they had opted for 'Plus' rather than 'Pro.' Simply building a device with a larger display, does not not automatically equate it to full professional capabilities.

Don't get me wrong, the improved powerful underlying hardware and the improved display capabilities coupled with a more finely-tuned stylus does not escape my recognition .... but these items alone do not enable the device for pure workflow enhancement across the board that could substitute for other existing hardware. Yes, artists who prefer to draw, design or annotate with a stylus, this is a special and welcome addition ... what about photo editors that would prefer to use full versions of Ps, Lightroom or any of another popular and established image editing options, vs. the pared down and limited iOs versions.

It is the level of software that can be called upon to execute a full wide spectrum of daily workflow, that would indeed fit the bill. iOs 9 and it's supported applications is not that solution. Even if MS offers a souped up, more desktop-like version of Word ... how does that help a professional video editor using an iPad Pro get the job done?

First of all since this is a forum about editing video with FCP X ... show me how and where the iPad Pro will allow any of us to import footage from our cameras directly to the device in the field ... to be further edited and enhanced in NLE software of any kind. I would think a truly professional device would be capable of such a mundane task.

ButchM,
I get what your saying. Not having OS X on the Pro tablet, and probably not being able to do any video editing on this device short of what is filmed on the iPad and edited in iMovie for the iPad.

I don't think this is a device for a film editor. Nor do I think it was meant to be. It's only got 128GB of SSD space, so even thinking about editing 4K on this seems a little retarded. Now maybe with some cloud computing going on somewhere this could become something of an editor, but I still don't think the video editor was thought of with this product.

From what I have heard of the surface Pro 3, which allows tablet with stylus and access to full programs like photoshop, it works pretty good. But the software wasn't built for touch and stylus input. it was built for mouse and keyboard input. And for some that might be good enough, but when it comes to an app built for touch...there isn't really a substitute. If Adobe could make PS for the iPad Pro and make it just as powerful as the desktop app, I think it would make the creativity part of PS come out more. And it's not a question on whether the iPad Pro can run an app like that or not...because it can. So that is why they call it Pro. Apple has given the developers a strong computer to make applications with, its now up to the developers. If they don't make the applications....then the Pro in iPad Pro will not hold up so well.

So muddy ....

The new iPhone 6s and 6+ will be capable of capturing 4k and editing same in iMovie for iOs ... but it is "retarded" to expect to do the same on an iPad 'Pro'? The aforementioned, have a slightly inferior hardware base.

Why is it up to Adobe to port or rewrite their pro software to iOs ... and Apple shouldn't be held to the same standard?

The simple solution, rather than forcing developers to nearly completely re-invent the wheel to support iOs ... would be to develop a tablet that can run OS X. Which, after evaluating the newest Macbook, I really thought that was where Apple was heading ...

Look at the hardware configuration and design of the Macbook ... replace the bottom shell top cover keyboard with a touch screen and you have a more fully 'Pro' large screen iPad capable of impacting a much broader spectrum of users.

Yes, as I indicated earlier, changes have to be made to OS X to accommodate a touch screen environ ... but who better to pioneer that aspect than Apple?

iOs is severely restricted in it's capabilities ... regardless of the power of the underlying hardware. For any tablet configuration to truly and fully answer a broad spectrum of use, independent from other external host hardware (as in breaking the leash with iTunes on your desktop/laptop to support iOs devices over the long haul)

Bottom line is ... in the field, I could edit externally captured photos, video, and audio with full desktop versions FCP X, Photoshop, Lightroom, Logic Pro, etc. on a lowly 11-inch Macbook Air for $899 but on a $1,079 iPad Pro? Not so much.

That is why I don't think this latest iteration of Apple tablet has fully earned the label of 'Pro' ...

ButchM- if your measure of any product called Pro is that it has to work for the Professional discipline of every creative/professional field, then I think you're expectations are overreaching.

At $899, an iPad Pro may not be a laptop replacement, but it's a heck of a artists tablet- insanely competitive on price with comparable products from the industry leader.

Professional editing may always be compromised on a pure tablet device. Maybe that's never going to be it's calling.

As with all sorts of products, just cause it isn't for me, doesn't mean it's not for anyone. I think Apple will find loads of success with the iPad Pro, with artist and professionals of all stripes. Video editors just aren't one of them (at least for now).

You misunderstand my point. I don't think I ever questioned whether or not some folks would consider the iPad Pro a great addition to their toolset. Professional or otherwise. I considered the original iPad an extremely valuable asset to my endeavors from the moment I took it out of the box. ... I am in no way inferring that this new larger iPad is without value to many users ... Only that Apple chose an inaccurate label to place upon the device. Based upon the total capabilities of the device as compared to existing hardware in the current lineup.

I also think I pointed out in my first comment on this thread that I personally had no desire to necessarily edit video on an iPad Pro ... merely point out if Apple wanted to use the descriptive add-on phrase ... perhaps it should be capable of running such apps natively in order to qualify for the title.

Yes, this iPad Pro will be (and should be) quite appealing to many artists who draw, paint and design freehand. I think I fully pointed that aspect out earlier. Beyond that limited, finite group (as we are well aware, Apple does not seem to develop products for narrowly focussed niche groups) ... just what exactly does the device offer, as a solution to enhance the productivity to a working professional, in any field, above and beyond what is capable of accomplishing with the current iPad Air 2? If the software utilized has the same exact capabilities on both an iPad Air 2 and a n iPad Pro ... does a larger display alone, qualify the device a 'professional' impact upon ones daily tasks? Is the difference between a Mac Mini and a Mac Pro based upon the physical size of the display employed?

My assessment of that question is ... not very much. iPad + would have been a much more accurate name for the device.

I do not think there is anything wrong with the inherit qualities of this new, larger tablet ... I just think it needs to offer more to fit it's moniker for a larger spectrum of users.
