Doesn't show up in the updates for me. However, it does show up under featured apps. But I can't seem to download it. You were able to update?

Same for me. Can't update. Codecs are updated, but not showing in the compressor presets.

I haven't updated myself, but possibly you might have to update the Pro Apps Codecs before the FCP X update will be offered?

Didn't try to update FCP X yet, curious to see how others fare first.

I did install Pro Video Formats 2.0 though and importing (and relinking to!) MXF also works for FCP X 10.1.3

Pro Apps 2.0 downloaded but FCP still doesn't appear in the updates. On the product page and my purchases page, the app says "update" instead of open.

If you trash (Or better yet, compress to a zip then trash) the 10.1.3 version, then go to purchases in the App store, it will let you download it.

OK, new update out. But it is as lame as lame can be for the time we've waited. As a trainer, this will hurt us, and training centers who offer FCPX training. Motion and Logic training has all but died. But, they make all their training money off of IT training. So, I guess no one at Apple will care much. Major let down, IMHO. And those that know me, know I fight tooth and nail for FCPX. ugh... what a lame ass excuse for an update... MXF, that's all, really? Who cares? Audio mixer? BMD support? Collaboration on an network? Where are the "pro" features? I'm so disappointed...

Too many bugs and fixes, not enough moving forward. Sorry, but from a die hard FCPX supporter and trainer, that's what I'm seeing now.

sucks... ugh... so falling behind...

I have a suspicion that this update was geared towards high end facilities, and the last update for FCP on the mavericks platform. From personal experience the auto backup bug was plaguing our post facility for months and it would only occur if libraries were stored on an XSAN volume, local DAS was fine. I think that Apple wanted to fix that bug along with adding some pro functionality while not forcing high end facilities to upgrade to Yosemite. Again, from experience our place just fully upgraded to Mavericks two months ago.

As for MXF support, I am very excited. It was always a huge PITA before when sending to different media outlets and specific camera types.

Overall I am very happy with the listed features, but to be fair, haven't taken it through an extensive test drive.

I think we will see either a Yosemite specific update or even a paid update in the next few months.

Just my two cents.

I certainly can't say I'm not disappointed- but I had my suspicions for the last few weeks that this might be a minor update.

There's been hints of upcoming features- around Audio, Color Correction... the expanded Frameworks that Philip Hodgetts wrote about recently certainly open up LOADS of possibilities. But the biggest features we've been waiting for are the same ones since probably 10.0.6... always seemingly just over the horizon.

While they don't time releases to it, I would very much hope that we'd see a BIG release before NAB. FCPX has been picking up steam over the last year- I hope Apple doesn't squander the good will they've got by not being aggressive enough with development.

Broadcast is the world I live in, and for this market this is a major update. I have seen an increasing number of tv production companies as well as some large broadcast facilities adopting FCP X in the past year, or considering to adopt it in the near future. Such decisions are not made overnight. And for these companies having or not having native MXF import and the industry-standard MXF OP1-A or AS-11 export is an absolute dealbreaker.

For a medium-sized production company having to purchase third-party solutions just for native MXF import and export can easily make a difference of 10,000 $ in their software budget. For large setups this can make a difference of +100K, even with volume licensing. But also individual producers, who only need to occasionally deliver programs for broadcast, will be happy with having a free solution built right into FCP X now and not having to rent Media Encoder or spend 900 bucks on third-party plugins to create their delivery package. Not to mention the large number of news reporters and camera operators who finally can import the MXF footage from their Panasonic or Sony ENG cameras natively in their NLE and stream their edited reports in the standard MXF format straight onto the media servers of their stations.

Native MXF support was long overdue. That's why I am pretty excited about this evolution. Purchasing MXF4Mac and making it free just for the sake of their broadcast clients clearly shows Apple's commitment to FCP X in enterprise-level workflows. Seeing this I don't think anyone can pretend anymore that "Apple does not care about the pros" without sounding utterly ridiculous. I am pretty sure a more general feature update is also in the pipeline for the near future. One does not necessarily exclude the other.

I wanted to respond as well. But Ronny was faster.
Saved me a lot of time for typing.
I 100% agree with Ronny.
And I haven't thought that it would have been this short difference in time between MXF4mac's disappearance in the rebirth in FCP X.
Congrats to the FCP X team.

i'm somehow upset since i already spend a few hundred dollars in a plugin to import MXF files in FCPX. Of course i'm glad about the update, but for me it came late.
Now, i have a question. I have the calibrated{q}mfximport installed. It is save to download the pro formats update? or i need to uinstall the calibrated software first?

It's always upsetting when you have spent money on something that you can find much cheaper or even for free some time after you bought it. But unfortunately that's the way it goes with any hard- or software these days.

It is perfectly safe to download the new pro formats, you don't need to uninstall Calibrated.

@Andreas,

I knew this was coming but I admit they have taken me by surprise by the speed they have been able to implement the MXF workflow.

An important footnote here is that MXF is NOT related to the 10.1.4 update at all. When you install the Pro Media update you also get the MXF import and export functionality in 10.1.3. This makes me feel confident that a more extensive feature update is coming in the near future.

Hi Ronny,
are sure that it gives MXF export functionality to 10.1.3 as well? When I look at the folder where the MXF component is stored (/Library/QuickTime/AppleMXFImport.component) I only find an import component.

@ Ronny

I got it by chance cause I was involved in parts of the MXF4mac business.
And as said I am astonished how fast everything is integrated into FCP X.

@ All
The Codec update alone is worth a few hundred bucks Christmas gift. MXF for all QT aware apps from 10.6.x thru 10.10.x

And as Ronny said it is one of the biggest contributions of Apple to the broadcast market (since years) and makes Apple an even more serious player there.

But again - just my 2 cents

For export you either need 10.1.4 or Compressor. With Compressor you can build your own export templates.
