If you look at the WWDC keynote demo starting at about 1:18:00 in

you will see that they already have a multi-level UI, from auto to picky tweaking. The more advanced level of the UI includes filters and retouch as well as adjustments. And given the access to the Photos database that 3rd parties will have in Photos for iOS (through PhotoKit), I'd be surprised if the OSX version didn't have the same plus good plugin support. Rather than just two apps in one, it looks like we will be getting the foundation for a unified photo ecosystem of apps – just like FCPX/Motion/XML provides the foundation for a unified video ecosystem of apps.

I predict it will be the usual way for Apple... The release a reimagined photos app that does things partly in a brand new exciting way. It will lack a few features that some people think are important. Then features will be added back in in updates.

I think it will be free with Yosemite, which also will be free. And Yosemite supports a "dark" UI mode. I expect the apps that come with the OS will also reflect this dark mode.

I'm certainly looking forward to Photo but, in the meantime, I had been thinking of purchasing Aperture before the announcement. Now I feel handcuffed since I can spend $80 for an EOL app or wait and continue to use iPhoto (ugh).

If only they'd make Aperture free for the time being.

So I'm just minding my own business today when suddenly iPhone and Aperture and all my libraries as well as Final Cut Pro 7 were instantly deleted from every Mac in the office!

Oh wait... that didn't happen.

Photos may rock my world some time in the future. When Photos comes out AND the plug ins I use are available in Photos AND the plug-ins can live in the raw processing stream I'll probably use it. Plug-ins that live in the raw processing stream was what I was hoping for as an Aperture update. Until then I'm not willing to wait. If the past is any model the first version of Photos will be somewhat less than Aperture and Aperture has been somewhat less than Lightroom for quite a while.

I can do pretty much everything in Lightroom that I did in Aperture, albeit some things not as easily. My original files haven't changed; they can be referenced by either system. I can export metadata if necessary. The library/catalog files are not so large that I can't keep both of them my disk. Starting about two days ago new edits are done with Lightroom. If I have to visit an old edit I might re-do it in Lightroom or fire up Aperture to make a quick tweak.

With CoreImage, that may not be an issue.

As long as the new Photos app has the smooth-ish ability to incorporate your stills into FCP X directly, then Photos will by my choice for stills manipulation.
(Have you noticed the obnoxious feature of the photos link in FCP where absolutely every place the Aperture library knows about is listed when you open the FCP photos pane? I found the solution to that, but is isn't obvious).

Friday's edition of FCPX Grill Podcast from Chris Fenwick, show 62, is an interview with Joseph Linaschke from apertureexpert.com about Aperture, Photos, etc. Great information, perspectives, analogies to FCP7>X and so on.
