@BenB and @cseeman: Those are great data point that support the idea that Photos.app = Aperture X with a simple UI turned on by default but lots of power available for those who want it.

This will give Apple the opportunity to provide a seamless photo-related experience across all of their devices and an easy path for users to grow in sophistication – more potential for lock-in in the Apple ecosystem.

Yes I have successfully purged my computer of all things Adobe and I don't want to pollute it again.
So I'll hang out till 2015. It's not like Aperture will stop working in Yosemite.

I wasn't referring to the WWDC keynote speech, I was referring to a few of the seminars they had for developers. They record them and post them on a developer site. It is going to be wide open to third parties, and from what I saw, I was impressed.

Yes, aside from Flash in my web browser, I'm Adobe free.

The big thing is that any third party app will be able to easily access the Photos app database/catalog, which means more interoperability with not just FCPX, but with Motion, also, I would assume, and cool apps like Pixelmator and Studio Artist.

Of course! So you get a really great library manager with some pretty cool tools but then any decent image editor can access that library as well! I love this new "more open" Apple that we are starting to see under Tim Cook.

and here's a much larger image of the pictured interface-

What's shown here certainly isn't Aperture level, but a step up from the WWDC demo.

I'm puzzled as to why you say this. When I zoom in on the photo it looks to me like a UI revision of the same capabilities that Aperture has. I find the 'Add' button at the upper right particularly revealing since it suggests the Aperture-like ability to access many more adjustments than just those shown.

We don't know, but I have yet to see any data points that indicate Photos.app will be any less capable than Aperture – although (as with FCP7 -> FCPX) it may take a few updates to get there.

BTW, great find of that picture.

Taking a few generations to get there (assuming it does) will put Apple photo editing about 3 years (or more) behind the competition. Some of us have been waiting patiently, doing without features already supported by Lightroom, for example, thinking that eventually Apple would get there with Aperture. We were wrong.

I liked Aperture. A lot. But I'm not going to add another years worth of photos to a library that will eventually have to be converted to something else, anyway. I think Lightroom will do most everything Aperture can do (except for multiple version of the same master file) today. It can also do a lot that Aperture couldn't do. It's time for me to move to Lightroom. Grumble.

marchyman, if you like Aperture so much (as I do), why do you need to move to LightRoom? Seriously? Photos is going to rock your world. And between now and then, Aperture will run just fine. I don't see any need to grumble and purchase Lightroom at all.

In fact, Adobe announced there were NOT working on a translation from Aperture, so you'll have to export/import all your work manually. But in Photos, it will be seamless.

Adobe is taking this as another "Final Cut moment" as an advantage. I like Aperture very much. Apple will make translation to the new Photo app full, fast and easy. I think Apple has even more in store in relation with other OS X apps.

"I think Apple has even more in store in relation with other OS X apps."

Yes, when you start to discover things like CoreImage and other technologies that are coming to maturity in Yosemite, it is glaringly obvious. Photos is going to blow away anything we saw before. Stick with Aperture until then, cause there is not a single reason to leave it at this point in time.

I'm with Ben on this. If you've been using Aperture, the future is likely now brighter and in any case your alternatives are no better than before the announcement.

+1 on Aperture, and I'm looking forward to Photos and optimistic about being able to continue to keep my Mac Adobe (and Microsoft) free.

I purchased Lightroom a few weeks back even though I have been using Aperture for a few years. The main reason was for doing timelapse videos. Anyhow, once I got to using Lightroom I realized it was pretty much superior to Aperture in every way, and started using it for all my photo work, not just timelapses. Pretty glad I did given this news.

I can't understand the mentality where people say "I won't use Adobe" or "I'm Microsoft free" or "I won't use Apple" etc. Surely pros will use whatever software gets the job done, and no doubt Adobe is due some credit in the computer photo editing world?

That said, I would not have bought Aperture if it was only available in the Creative Cloud; luckily it's still available as a standalone piece of software you can own, but who knows if that will change down the line...?

"Pretty glad I did given this news."

I do not understand what is negative or bad about the news we've gotten so far?

Also, time-lapse can be handled with QuickTime 7 Pro for $30. Or in FCPX which I assume you already have.

Apple also publicly stated that Photo will have the same cataloging, metadata, adjustment power as Aperture and iPhoto, and even more powerfully.

But, again, as stated before, having seen the WWDC video of the seminar about CoreImage and other technologies like CorePhoto, the new Photo app is going to blow away Aperture or Lightroom. It will also be more open to third party apps and plugins than either. I'm VERY excited to dive in to Photo!

Face it, Aperture (and Lightroom) is 10 year old coding, which is out dated, slow, bulky, and can't take advantage of Apple's new frameworks and technologies that are in OS X Mavericks, and coming even more in Yosemite. I can't say I'd actually blow money, personally, on an app based on outdated programming code that is becoming more limited every day.

Photo is amazing news! Can't wait to dive in!

Anytime a product gets EOL'd it's going to create some anxiety.

I applaud Apple for announcing this so far in advance of the the Photos.app launch. They've been less understanding about this in the past.

Even if Aperture was EOL'd simultaneous with a pre-announcement of Aperture X, there'd still be much hand wringing. The fact that it's being replaced with another app that is supposed to merge lighter consumer needs with Aperture's depth is bound to raise some ire. But there's nothing that can be done about that.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as the old saying goes. So it's all speculation until Photos.app is released. It will almost certainly meet my needs- but then I never purchased Aperture either.

Simon, I assume you mean you wouldn't have bought *Lightroom* if it was only available thru CC. So, there are obviously some business practices of Adobe that you disagree with. Me too. That (and various other reasons) are why I avoid supporting certain companies.

I'm not a pro, so have more freedom of choice than some might. I'm totally fine with it if not everyone agrees :-)

1) It's always a pr-stunt to announce any product is set to EOL ...

2) … announced at WWDC just means: "Hey. update your plug-ins to the new architecture, tell us what APIs you need, still time to adjust a few things!"

3) 'Photo' stands on FCPX' shoulders! - All that meta-data, tagging, organizing stuff, how to 'group' zillions of files into Events, Stacks, Albums, Smart Collections, Libraries, wotever ... sharing such data-bases in networks… hey,'we' had that already!

4) … iMovie is the dumbed-down version of FCPX (sharing code, says Alex) = makes sense, 'cause there's 'basic' editing, and there's complex editing (grading, comp, b-roll...) What iMovie lacks are a few 'automatisms' and official (=already built-in) plug-ins support.

… Garageband is a dumbed-down LogicX = makes sense, 'cause there's basic music-making and complex ... not my tea, but was told, Apple dumbed a few wrong tools down - anyhow... room for improvement.

… iPhoto a dumbed-down Aperture? … THAT is the interesting part! Will Apple, the GUI-geniuses, accomplish to offer a two-face Photo-app? A 'white one' with Panorama-maker, spot-heal and album-templates "Baby shower", and a 'black one' with curves, meta-date-editing, XDL-lists (does somewhat exist in 'stills'?? ;) ) ....??? Two apps in one? Two for one? - Price-tag? If any … ?? ......-

What about pre-press (CMYK, raster, vector...) => let there be Photoshop (DaVinci has its existence too, or as AE). And what about 'painting' => there's Pixelmator. :D

Comparing what happened the last 6y (since appearance of FCPX' ugly beta, iMovie08) in the 'moving picture' area, the early announcement of EOL aperture/iPhoto vs Photo offers a positive perspective!

my 5¢ …
