iPhoto and Aperture EOL it seems
www.loopinsight.com/2014/06/27/apple-sto...lopment-of-aperture/

This may impact how people access photo libraries in FCPX. I guess FCPX will have integration with the new Photos when it's released.

And before anyone panics, Jim Dalrymple has already covered the FCPX question. From www.loopinsight.com

"Apple was very clear when I spoke with them this morning that development on other pro apps like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro is continuing. Professionals in those app categories should not worry about their apps—they will continue as normal."

Which has me thinking that maybe FCPX will have direct iCloud file access?

Photos is far from professional. I hope FCPX starts reading Lightroom catalogs, cause Photos ain't gonna cut it. My Aperture library is way to massive for iCloud. The cost every month for the extra storage would suck.

It seems unclear that there will be a version of Photos on Yosemite.
If there is, it's unclear if it will have professional level editing abilities.

What is the logic of pulling the plug and driving all the Aperture users to Adobe?

This news really makes me very upset.

From Macworld

The Photos app, previewed at the 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference, will become the company’s main photographic focus for both professionals and consumers. As it grows, Apple intends the single app to serve the needs of both consumers and professionals.

Apple thinks it will suit the needs of professionals FWIW.

Don't bleed your $$$ soul to Adobe just yet.

Not by forcing all my stuff into iCloud. I'd have to see the app first. The little I have been able to see, I'm not impressed. Looked like mega-babyfied iPhoto in the WWDC preview. Not like FCPX, but in the way FCPX was accused of being. We will have to wait and see.

I honestly do fear it will be like QuickTime mess, where 7 is better than 10, but...

Yes, I certainly hope that iCloud is optional in terms of the new photo management scheme for Yosemite +

The MacWorld report differs from others I've read that specifically say Photos will NOT be suitable for those who use Aperture in a professional manner. There's even talk about a plug-in to help convert an Aperture Library to Lightroom.

I've been using Aperture since 1.5. I'll miss it. I hope the plug-in rumors are at least somewhat true. I don't want to have to export versions of every photo in my library I've edited to get the edits into Lightroom along with the original image. Grumble.

At least we get a warning, not like with Final Cut Server, or mislead like with Shake.

This image from The Loops article shows a lots more detailed controls than what was on stage at WWDC. Who knows where it will be at by next year.

EDITED to add a larger version of the interface image I found.

My take is that this is in the pattern of FCPX/iMovie and LPX/Garageband in that Apple has moved to unified underlying code-base with simplified UI for the consumer offering. Does anyone yet know what the price for Photos.app will be? Suppose Apple, continuing its move toward free software, gives it away. In that case there is no need to have two separate distributions. All they need to do is allow users to select how "pro" their UI is.

Back to FCPX/iMovie and LPX/Garageband: At this point in time, in both cases, the underlying code is essentially the pro app. The consumer app just gets a simplified UI. If Apple follows this same pattern, Photos.app would be Aperture X with an option, likely turned on by default, for a simplified UI.

This may be much better news than many are assuming – or not ;)

Also, as for the idea that Apple is preparing to assist with a migration to Lightroom, tech crunch has now retracted that:

"Article updated to clarify that there is no official workflow for migrating to Lightroom."
(at the bottom of techcrunch.com/2014/06/27/apple-to-cease...-to-photos-for-os-x/ )

Since it's replacing iPhoto, I think we can assume Photos will be free.

Wow what bitter sweet news to wake up to today.
I'll really miss Aperture. I only hope that all my tags will move across to the Photos App.

Maybe my crazy prediction that Motion and Aperture would eventually merge may be correct after all?

A buddy inside Apple is letting me see some of the WWDC lecture videos concerning frameworks and CoreImage stuff that is going in to the Photos app. Wow, very impressive. I think I just gained a lot more hope. I'm sticking with Aperture until Photos comes out. I think folks will be blown away, if what I saw is a real hint at what is coming.

I guess I interpreted the WWDC presentation differently. I was under the impression there would be an "easy auto everything" mode and a more advanced "lots of tweaks" mode. This along with the potential for plugins.
