Hi artofoe,

Quick question, are the clips on your timeline compound clips by any chance? I have had problems placing titles over compound clips recently. When I place them inside the compound clip they work fine.

Weird I know.

One thing you can try is exporting an XML of the timeline, and then importing it into a new library. Strangely enough that can sometimes help.

I'd have to agree with Tom. Instead of selecting all the clips and then dragging them with the position tool, just insert a black slug of 5 seconds between the clips you want to separate. It works flawless.

I chime in a bit late.

While I saw several serios problems with the versions of FCP X till 10.0.9 most of the things are fixed with 10.1.x.

I'm as supporter and developer in this subtitle business and have to answer questions for 1000+ subtitle timelines almost every week.
Following some rules makes it normally flawless to work with that amount of subtitles.
As mentioned earlier in this thread it may take some time to make some global changes show up in timeline.

While a agree with TPayton in most points I totally disagree that using Basic Title would make things better. Basic Title is not suited for using subtitles. Its character based while subtitles should be paragraph based.
With Basic Title there also issues when using some special characters or non Roman languages - same with some other character based tiles.

As I'm author of X-Title Importer I know a lot about subtitle handling not only for FCP X.

Feel free to send me a XML as well. But make sure to zip it.

Andreas - I stand corrected regarding basic title.

Actually, I don't use basic title either for captions. I use your "TextUp" titles that you made as part your excellent X-title for my captions. I should have just said it!

Btw. I just tried this on a macpro 2013 and didn't have any problems.

Just did your test on my R MBP 15 late 2013 16Gb Ram. all works fine in about 2 min.

about 500 subs. i did documentary film on FCPX but subs on Avid.
then exported and converted to SRT and imported in FCPX by FXFactory Subs.

why I used Avid? because many fixes in subtitle text (it was translate from Russian to English). Avid has more powerful plugin SubCap in Generators than FXFactory Subs.

Again my 2 cents.

I don't see any advantages for subtitles in Avid with SubCaps. I had/have some huge companies using Avid for editing and FCP legacy for subtitles cause its more flexible.
There are several award winning movies subtitled in FCP even though the edit was done in Avid.

I had been one of the "big haters" of FCPX on first release cause the missing XML and the bad subtitle support and some more things.
Now with 10.1 I see the power coming back – though the workflow requires 3rd party apps.

I don't critize 'compative' products but have to note that the sugarFX subtitle is easy and makes it easy to import subtitles for a finished movie. But it makes it hard to modify timing or settings for a group of subtitles and also styles per line for subtitles automatically. Also projects "in work" are hard to handle same as grammar and spell corrections from outside.

You can do that in Avid somehow, but not with the elegance it can be done within current FCPX. So no styles per title line via import. Spell and grammar correction from outside will "flatten" your individual subtitles to one style.

Have you ever tried to export high quality rendered subtitles (1 frame long) to an EDL or an authoring app compatible file format from Avid. You can do somehow but you loose your subtile settings.

I could talk here for hours.
But the issues the OP mentioned seem to be a kind of workflow issue or setup issue.

As said, I know what I'm talking about and I'm definetively not an Apple fan boy. But I see a lot of workflow opportunities with FCP X.

-Andreas

P.S. Last big project was 7500 subtitles distributed over several languages. Everthing worked fine - though sometimes pretty slow.

i agree with you and you already answered why do not use SugarFX/ it is easy and hard at the same time for some important things (groups settings, timing).
3rd party apps are too slow develop.

FCP X is pro for editing but there is no some important things like MXF OP1a import/export, XDCAM export. 3rd path apps for these things are a wast of time.

for now if i make film on Avid - i export from Avid to XDCAM disk (1080i 52 min of film writes to disk about 40 min)
if i make film on FCP X - i export file (52 min exports to 1080i ProRes on same computer about 1 hour then link AMA in Avid and export to XDCAM 40 min)
it is not professional for direct broadcast.

7500 subs!!! wow!!! i had only 500.

This is a stupid conversation. It doesn't work for your requirements, don't use it. It serves many other users needs for a huge variety of purposes including broadcast delivery.

Maybe it's the memory. When I did this, all of the 16GB memory were used.
When I press p, and move about 1hour clips, the memory used by FCPX boosts up from about 1GB to 10GB....so, I think maybe apple should improve memory management for FCPX.

I have 32gb on the iMac. The macpro had 12gb. I suspected the same thing and the macpro was only using 1gb for fcp. My iMac isn't even using a gig. (I was using the XML file you sent me on both of these).

Why don't you download Andreas's xtitle, install it and then use his textup titles that he designed for captions. Then run your test again, see if they results are any different.

artofoe wrote: just do a test, final 7 can, avid can, but fcpx10.1.1 can not:

layer 1: 10s video (1080 50i)
layer 2: 3s text*3 ,just white text

then, copy it to 1.5 hour
then, select all layers from about 20mins to the end
press p
move 5 seconds.
the FCPX die.

I do this on mac pro 2013 6 core 2*D500

so, I can say FCPX can not do subtitle which is essential in post production. :(

but FCP7 and Avid can.

This is really crazy! You know how many times I have seen Avid crash doing the same steps?
I guess that make it also not professional.
By the way a professional is not only someone that makes money but also know what to do with what he is given. Not sure how I should see it in your demonstration.

I'm at the Apple store waiting for a repair, so I tried the test on a MacMini 4GB of ram. A bit of beach balling, but no crashes or hang ups.

for now if i make film on Avid - i export from Avid to XDCAM disk (1080i 52 min of film writes to disk about 40 min)

My dear friend,

I agree with Tom this is a stupid conversation.

I have been in broadcast for over 37 years and I never have had to export to an XDCAM disk as a master delivery format, nor would I ever want to do so. Disks are used for capturing footage on older XDCAM cameras.

Exporting OP-1 MXF files is simple and straightforward in FCP X. But modern broadcasters prefer AS-11 deliveries these days, and for this you need a third-party plugin. If you cannot afford a professional MXF plugin you shouldn't be doing broadcast editing that requires MXF export.

And as to your subtitle issue: I don't see the problems you are having, and from what I have been reading nor does anyone else. So that makes me suspect the problem may be with you and not with FCP X ;)

Kind regards,

Ronny

Hello,

I am new on this forum. I make a lot of subtitling and I found the easy and best way is to use a software like "belle-nuit subtitler" or "annotation", where you do the spotting and after that you export the subtitles as PNG and the list as XML, with that subtitling it is just a question of alpha layer, you can move your ST in FCPX or change it and reexport it one by one or in group for correction. The payload is very light for fcpx and the quality of title is great. Since 6 years now, using it with FCP7 and then FCPX (via 7toX), no problem at all with multilingual ST.

I think the workflow is much more efficient that doing subtitling inside FCPX (or Avid, or FCP7…).

Have a try, Jacques

Hi, everyone, I've just tried this project on these computers, all get the same result:
1. Mac Pro old: 12cores 3.06Ghz; 24GB RAM; nvidia K5000; 42TB promise Raid.
2. iMac: i5 3.2Ghz; 8GB RAM; nvidia 775m; 1TB SSD.
3. Mac Pro 2013: 6cores 3.5G; 16GB RAM; 2*D500; 256GB SSD.

I don't mean the FCPX crashed, it just has very slow response when I use "p"
to move about 1 hour clips with about 1000 text clip on them. About 5 mins later,
the FCPX moved these clips, and I can't make the movement precisely.

By the way, I've tested 4K 50p prores422 on these computers,
all use better quality settting for playback:

1. Mac Pro old: 1 layer 4K 50p realtime, but when rendered(I made a dissovle about 10 seconds), failed to playback realtime.
on better quaility, the CPU usage climbs up to about 1000% playing the render part,
while about 2xx% playing normal part.

2. iMac : 1 layer 4K 50p realtime, rendered part no problem, normally 180% cpu usage, while rendered part 240%.
3. Mac pro 2013: 2 layers 4K 50p realtime, rendered part no problem.

I don't know why the old Mac pro cannot play the rendered part on the high quality setting, maybe I should ask apple it's the frequency of CPU or the poor performance of the K5000 card. Maybe we should sold out these cards, and buy some PNY680?
