FCPX 10.1.0 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 27 Nov 2013 02:24 #34725

I still have a few USB 2 drives actually. They work great and XDCAM 35 too. And multicam works fine up to 4 streams using proxy transcodes. As you pointed out. How fast do they need to be exactly to play 25Mb streams? Getting the job done is often more important then having the best toys

It's true, it is possible which makes it an opinion. In fcp of old the drive speed didn't matter as much because it was only using the drive for the video streams. Now it's doing a ton of metadata and thumbnail shenanigans under the hood. It's my opinion that using a drive array that also does it's own thing at random times should be avoided.
I agree, stating opinions as fact is no good. I hope they fix the sluggish performance of large events in 10.1. I went back on topic! |

Alex - can you check and see how many times "December 3" or maybe "12/3/13" appears anywhere in the code of iMovie 10?
I couldn't resist. ![]() |

FCPX 10.1.0 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 27 Nov 2013 06:54 #34738
So, do we think that we'll be getting anything else other than FCPX, software wise?
I'd love to see an approach more akin to Smoke. Where Apple bring back a revised version of Color's toolsets, and integrate it into a custom UI right inside of FCPX. A dedicated color grading interface, it'd be ace! Also, Mica has me all kinds of excited right now!! I'd love to see a return of a node based workflow from Apple. Though this one doesn't seem quite as likely, but perhaps it could be a rewrite of Motion? And on that note - Motion. This is desperately in need of a BIG update. A true 3D environment would be great. 3D objects, a more advanced particle solution, and cameras that are actually based on real world cameras, ala Nuke and AE etc. |

just to sum-up realistic expectations so far:
• a 'Jony-fied' UI, cosmetics to design of app • round-tripping features • evolution of file-management, in special regards of collaborated work-flows • evolution of 'colors' • tons of tiny improvements aka '>500 new features' … • speed-bump, by 'under the hood' optimization with GPUs >>> I guess, FCPX.1 will feel like a 'new' app! Some silly reasoning: Motion does deserve a major update - it is the last 'pro' app without an X in its name! ![]() |

I'm very confident that we'll get Aperture X. It's long over due for an update and Lightroom has been eating its lunch.
I hope we'll get Motion X but I'm not so sure. Also as Logic Pro X has not turned out to be the audio solution we wanted for post I'm hoping there will be a new Soundtrack type App. (Probably won't happen but would be nice.) either that or the XML from FCP X will work much better with LP X. Compressor needs to be retired for good. I hope it's replaced by an app that takes over both the compression and presentation roles. Don't know why they would release an Motion since it as old as the current Final Cut Pro.
But they need to start updating Motion. Shoot, Pixelmator has been getting more major updates then Motion ever did since version 3! But I really like to see a nice update for Compressor! Better workflow, notification center and email, speed, speed and um speed. Maybe conniption to Apple's servers! ![]() |

"over both the compression and presentation role"
What do you mean by presentation role? |

I feel pretty confident that we'll see an update to Motion. I think it will be a healthy update but nothing groundbreaking. Certainly no major shifts in the UI. If they were going to do that, I think they would have done it will Motion5. Other than FCPX round-tripping, it's very tough to say where they'll have put their energy in this update. Aperture (like FCPX) was name-dropped during the MacPro presentation in October as receiving an update to go along with the MacPro. It's still using the old ProApps UI, and hasn't had a substantive update in years. So it really needs it's "LogicProX" update. I'm dubious about Mica as a high end compositing app. I think Apple has walked away from that super-specialized end of the business. Like with Color, I believe Apple just realized they couldn't compete with the top players. Motion may get some additional feature in this arena, but it won't be a competitor to something like Nuke or Smoke. Compressor is strange. It wasn't really updated when it was carried over to the MAS- no UI update, no noticeable performance improvements. I think it will either see a big update in December, or it will get absorbed into FCPX if Apple can make it work as a background process that doesn't impact editing. LogicProX. Right now Apple isn't pushing it as a DAW. Perhaps December updates to both FCPX and Logic will make them play nicer. We'll see. And let's not forget we might see an FCPX iPad app like Logic received. Some command-key stuff, but hopefully more oriented towards control-surface features like colour correction and audio mixing. |

And as if on cue to todays conversation-
alex4d.com/notes/item/the-case-for-a-new-apple-proapp Alex presents a pretty even handed case (both positive and negative) for several new pro app possibilities. Larry Jordan has been saying since his meeting with Apple at NAB 2012 that he though that there was another piece to the "Pro apps" puzzle that had yet to be revealed. If it were just an FCPX update alone, next month would be interesting- but if there's more it could be REALLY interesting. |

I still think about Apple's announcement this past 28MAR13 that they wanted the professional video editor market back. Then nothing happened until WWDC in June when they announced a new FCPX optimized for the new MacPro coming in the fall. Phil didn't even say if it would be a paid update or not though, in fairness, a "new version of Final Cut Pro" would imply a new purchase. Then nothing happened till around the 23OCT13 iPad event at Yerba when the MacPro and FCPX were pushed back to December. Motion, though periodically updated, and Compressor, languish. It's either gonna be an unlikely disappointment, especially in light of the interesting iMovie 2013, FCPX directory comparisons, or a jaw dropping update with a lot of new features. I'm betting on a game changer.

Just to be clear- Apple wasn't specific about a release date for the MacPro or FCPX at WWDC in June- they only said "later this year". So I don't think it's fair to say the release was "pushed back"- it was just refined. Technically speaking anything up to December 20th is still considered "Fall". |

Mark Spencer and Steve Martin on MacBreak Studio are realising Motion tutorials one after the other.
Almost looks like they have hurry up releasing these videos since a new Motion might be around the corner and things will be changed. ![]() |
