As already stated, one limitation is the asymmetric nature of most ISPs, where upload speed is much slower than download.

Another issue is ISPs often have a monthly data cap, which all devices in your home share. E.g, Netflix, Hulu, and all other computer-related internet usage are tallied up against your monthly data cap.

A third issue is the upload/download nature of most transfers, whereby the storage provider must have space to store the large file and typically the recipient cannot start downloading until the upload is finished.

My group has used infinit.io/ which has the option of direct peer-to-peer transfer. This doesn't eliminate possible slow uploads due to ISP limitations nor possible monthly data cap but it can avoid the two-step upload/download process.

For large transfers it is often easier, more reliable and faster to FedEx a USB thumb drive or portable HDD to the recipient.
