on some other board, the 'hardware experts' murmured, the two GPUs alone cost regular 3k .....
and 12core Xeon? and 256GB SSD? and 32GB fast Ram? and .....
ok, minus 7.99$ for no disk-drive and minus 29.99$ for no hard-drive :woohoo:

Since then I've been on 2 laptops and now an iMac. I've been waiting for this overhaul and it will suit my needs nicely. I never swap out internals in my machines. I keep them for 2-3 years and then sell them for a good price and upgrade.
Thing to remember with this machine will be the new 4K Cinema Displays you'll probably want to buy for it. Those won't be cheap. I'm betting on a single display and a topped out machine costing 6-8K.

The Kona Card was $2,500. The tablet was probably a grand. And the monitor had to be $1,700 at the time. That leaves less than 5K for the machine itself. And you could absolutely configure a MacPro to be 5 grand in 2006.

very interesting question!
unfortunately, I have no idea of hardwares, but the low-end Pro has to offer substantial 'more' than a high-end iMac.
… I remember well, when Apples product portfolio was discussed with a 3x3 matrix …
meanwhile, the all-in-one 'home computers' are so powerful, it wouldn't make no sense to built a weaked proTube, just to stay under 1.5k$ ........
radical thinking: will you get it in any configuration at all?
or, does the housing allow at-home replacement of RAM and SSD, and that's it?
… maybe too radical.
two flavors: 6 core or 12 core. 16/32GB, 256/512SSD. done. keeps the assembly line small.

It seems like Apple will want this at a low price point, but it's going to be a low price point for professional users, not iMac users.
What I'm curious about is the RAM. If there are only 4 slots, how will anyone max out at the 128GB of RAM that they system can handle? I don't think I've ever seen a 32GB stick of RAM...

It might be cheaper because its getting made in the US
I'm curious about this if anyone knows. It's only going to be assembled in the U.S. manufacturing looks like it will continue to go on elsewhere.
back through the 60's and into the 70's, pre VAT days, the Lotus 7 was provided as a kit here in the UK. The purchaser could buy and assemble the car themselves, not only was the assembly price removed but also the TAX on shipping full cars into the UK.
Does anyone know if there's anything along these lines that could be in action in the U.S?
Another thing that comes to mind is the trouble Apple has had trying to get their money back into the U.S. tax free. Maybe something related here?
I know that in recent years some small companies in the UK that were forced to move aspects of manufacture to China in the 70's, 80's are finding it cheaper to bring it back here now that the Chinese economy is growing and their wages are rising.
So maybe it is as simple as that.

the video showing The Tube(s) in use - two working ones on stage - is online:
developer.apple.com/wwdc/videos/
PAINTING THE FUTURE .....
Hoffman mention "10GBs of picture data, with 60fps in a 3D environment"
this looks … fast. imho.
completely trivia, but …
Jonathan Hoffman makes a site-note, he was allowed to use the MacPro for weeks,
… but it was hidden in a huge box!
"…could be a fridge or whatever… I haven't seen it until yesterday! …"
… so much about 'secrecy'

Edit: Never mind I see now "Painting the Future".

I paint with BodyPaint 3D in C4D, and I don't work with anything close to the texture sizes he is demoing.
Watching the performance of Mari running on the new Mac Pro (all pre-release stuff) compared to BodyPaint 3D on my iMac made me think back to working with Cyber Studio on my old Atari STE.
The difference isn't really that extreme, but is massive enough to bring it to my mind.

And the comments from the guys at Blackmagic, The Foundry, and Pixar have been nothing but extremely positive. I'll take that perspective over the hordes of message-board posters.
This MacPro and a nice fat FCPX (and hopefully Motion and Logic) update this year are going to make me very happy.
