Just a small nitpick, but HEVC is h.265.

UPDATE: When I go to a different library, the extreme slowness disappears. ALSO: If I create a new project in the "slow" library and copy and paste a timeline from a "slow" project into this new project, FCPX runs at full speed with no hangups -- even tho that same timeline (the one I copied) hangs up miserably in the "slow" project)! What is going on??
Could be some incompatible updates in the FCP codebase, i.e., something isn't being transferred or interpreted properly from "older" versions of Library components.
That's wonderful news if copying the contents from a Project created/used in a previous version of FCP works fine when pasted in a new, empty Project. This may also apply to updated Libraries that exhibit slower performance or responsiveness. Thanks for reporting this.

Well I'm glad that it's not the SSD...but now I have to copy the contents from some 50 projects and media into "new" projects with similar names. Would still like to know the reason and solution. Anyone know the max # of projects allowed in a Library?
It just may be a change, in part due to iPad integration with FCP desktop.
If you had zipped a copy of 10.6.5 before installing 10.6.6, I'd say go back to it. Besides losing some audio plugins and FCP for iPadOS compatibility, there is nothing really compelling about 10.6.6. Exporting XML files for Projects, Events, and Libraries is always a good idea, as well (a "cuts only" export of a finished Project and an XML of the same are also good safety measures). Copying a Library in the Finder is good move, before a new version of FCP "touches" it.
Reason? Apple won't ever (most likely) give a reason, or even publish much or any info about changes made. Apple is a great case study in corporate arrogance, condescension, and how not to build rapport or goodwill with a customer base (especially for "pro" products).

Off topic, but why do people always recommend zipping older versions of Final Cut Pro? Just create a new folder called Old Final Cuts (or whatever) drag the app in there and relabel it as Final Cut Pro 10.6.5 (or whatever). That's what I did and have since reverted back to 10.6.5 because of Apple's dumbing down of the app thanks to the iPad version.

It's a safety measure. If that folder is in the Applications folder, any application it contains might be scanned or potentially load background processes, etc., at startup. If the folder is elsewhere, it doesn't matter. Many applications contain various drivers and background processes than can load at startup in their packages.
I have a folder, in which I put the zipped copies of older FCP versions. "Double prophylaxsis" ha, ha, ha...

Didn't save a copy of 10.6.5...how do I get one?
You might be able to ask someone to send, or make available, a copy of 10.6.5. I have no idea if versions downloaded are HW-specific, or not, or if this would work. It _should_ be legal in that your App Store "receipt" is what authorizes you. Never tried it myself...
