Just received a partial solution from Ben Balser on the Creative Cow forum.
With the browser selected hit the Shift-Z keys which is quicker than opening the Clip Appearance window and moving the sliders etc.

That's odd. I made that very same comment maybe a week ago but apparently it never posted. (Often happens when formatting gets changed.) Yes, that does work as it's the only way I've ever dealt with that expand-to-infinity madness FCP forces on everyone.

Shift-Z doesn't scroll back up or resize the clips. It only shortens their view length.
For me, anyway.
Sigh.
Why this very darned obvious glitch, which makes FCPX feel totally unreliable, is not being fixed, is totally beyond me. It has been *years*. Freaking. *years*.

Just checked - seems to be working for me. Tried a few different libraries, and each retains its own settings between launches / open-close-open operations.
I had to change them initially, as I normally only use icon view when I'm actively skimming lots of media. My default is list view.

Honestly, if it was I hadn't noticed. List view has been my default forever, and that's been solid.

I'm assuming it hasn't been fixed, and probably never will be.
List view doesn't change, but I don't like that setting. I'll only bother upgrading when I am forced to at this stage - release notes say nothing about fixing this endless problem.

It's still there in 10.6.8 and will probably never be altered.
