in my case I import all the gopro footage in first and then use FCP to do the editing from there. Perhaps I need to not "copy" it in then when I do the import?Tom Wolsky wrote: When you import from a camera card or archive you can import selected ranges in a clip.

Not with QT files, but with a camera card you can.

ClipExporter is a must-have application if you need to send clips from an FCP X timeline to other applications such as After Effects or Nuke. It creates new trimmed media with handles. But trying to use ClipExporter to consolidate your FCP X projects with trimmed media and handles will not work in most cases. Many have tried, but I have yet to see someone being successful at this.
- Re-importing the trimmed media from ClipExporter in FCP X will create new clips, it will not replace the existing clips.
- Trying to relink the original clips to the ClipExporter clips will fail most of the times.
The media manager in classic FCP could indeed create new trimmed clips with handles. But it was so horrible that we started calling it the "media mangler". I don't think anyone wants to go back to that. Media management in FCP X is far more evolved.
So up till now, the best way to work with only the media you need is to trim the media during the import. There are two ways you can import footage while trimming the imported media:
- When you import from a camera card and you select ranges in the import window, only the media relating to these ranges is imported, and NOT the entire clip.
- When you need to work with a standalone video file (not from a camera card) and you only want to import a portion of that file, you can use VirtualCamCard to create a sparse bundle that FCP X will see as a camera card. It works with the latest versions:

Thank you Ronny
VirtualCameraCard works great for me. Especialy that you don't need to copy the files into the sparse bundle.
Good solution

thanks Ronny - I tried this out and can see there seems to be no other way. For what I'm doing with a lot of video I ended up preferring to import everything into FCP to seek the bits of video I need, then quickly/easily add it to the timeline and keep going. At the end I'll just have to accept to export the original video out with ClipExporter2 so I'll have this, but noting I'll lose the project.ronny courtens wrote: So up till now, the best way to work with only the media you need is to trim the media during the import.
