One way would be as follows:
In your project library, click the project and then select "Delete render files". From there, you can choose to delete ALL render files or UNUSED render files.
In your event library, click the event for your project and select "Delete render files". Again, choose ALL or UNUSED.
Then in your project library, select "Move Project" or "Duplicate project" and from there choose to move or duplicate the project and its associated USED clips only. This will disregard the entire clip and only affect the portions of the clip actually in your timeline.
If you choose to duplicate then you can delete the original project in its entirety.

@benco...sorry for the misinformation. That method will not accomplish what you need.
You should be able to used Quicktime 7 (and maybe QT10) to trim the clip lengths before you import them into FCPX.

Thank You very much guys. It was helpful. Thought it didn't solve the problem unless there
is some update to FCPX, at least now I understand that I can't do it.
Time to buy an external HD

Time for us all to fill out the feedback form again.
And has anyone noticed that page has been greatly simplified? Thank goodness.

If you select the original and simply hit the delete key, it is removed from the Browser view, but is still in your Event folder taking up drive space.
If you only want to "view" a small segment of a longer clip, keyword ranges and rating ranges save you all the work of a CC. And that CC is not physically saving drive space. Which I think the OP was trying to do.

Rendering? So you're creating these in a Timeline, not in the Browser, right? And if it doesn't need rendering?
I'm sorry, I'm just confused and trying to understand what you're doing.
Like I said, I am doing this, and even though I tell FCP X to send the original to the Trash, it doesn't, it is still in my Events folder, taking up the same amount of drive space.

If you remove the original media, your compound clips will only work if you had to render your media into the compound (say, if your compound clip doesn't match your clip specs, or you've rendered effects) before you deleted the original media. And worse, if you have to re-render your compound (either in an event or your project), you can't because that requires the original media.
So don't delete the original media unless you want to lose your work.

While FCP7 had this, my recollection is it was buggy and didn't work that well. Maybe some of the more experienced people could comment.
There is no question the feature itself would be nice. FCPX is so fast and the metadata management so good, it encourages importing huge amounts of material, vs the old practice of evaluating and importing a restricted set of selects.
On Premiere I previously would use all kinds of external trimming tools to reduce the amount imported, since the organizational tools inside the editor were so limited. With FCPX I just import everything and don't even look at it until it's inside the editor.
Even though storage is cheaper than ever, there is a good argument that FCPX needs a "used range" consolidation/extraction feature.

Mac App Store:
itunes.apple.com/app/clipexporter-2/id929171257
The purpose of the app is to export timeline clips as separate files for use in other apps such as AE. But you could run the export and then bring the resulting clips back into your event, then delete the original(s).
It would be nice if this was built into FCPX, but at least this app will automate an otherwise laborious process.
You might also be able to finagle something like this using roles, directly in FCPX:
support.apple.com/kb/PH17904?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US
Finally, you could use MpegStreamClip (or Compressor) to open your file, set in and out points, and export to whatever format you need. Perform this operation prior to importing into FCPX.
It seems like ClipExporter 2 will do the job with the least amount of hassle. Depending on how often you need to do this type of thing, and at what point in your workflow it needs to be done, the $109 price tag may be worth it.
Good luck!
Paul

That would make every sense for that to be true, I mean, who needs to import the clapper board of every clip and the talent fluffing lines in every take?
I suggested a long time ago, even took a screen grab, what we need is the old much loved media import window from FCP6/7, that allowed you to view and select a portion, not the entire clip.
At the end of the day, media is a problem, something I think has been overlooked in the haste to get something onto the shelves of the NLE designers, we have in essence taken a huge step backwards without realizing it, we are back in the days of reels, the camera archive icon is actually a warning about where we have ended up.
This question raises 2 important aspects, how do we deal with media at the point of editing, and then afterwards? When I was editing on tape, up to 2009, we used DVCPRO, which was digital, the thought I had at the time, would it be possible to somehow use this robust medium to somehow store digital data to tape, I realize that it is not going to be instant replay as with SD cards, but if you are archiving, the idea is that it for long term storage, and the client if they need to review or reuse, just has to pay for this extra time, part of life folks.
Let's hope FCPX dev have thought about this long and hard and are working on a solution, if they are not, gosh well that would be an oversight, my gut says they forgot!!

Would FCP be able to automatically associate the ClipExporter versions of the video with the project? i.e. after you delete the original clips and media leaving a bare project. Any tips/tricks in terms of how to do this? i.e. delete original large media from the project and replace with the ClipExporter short media?
