Lightroom type controls in FCPX?

Hey guys and gals, Ive been out of the fcp.co loop for a while - been busy. I was just wondering - if anyone knows of anything close to having PS and/or LR image/adjustment control within FCPX as a plugin. Does this even exist? Obviously without having to go from one platform to the other....

Thanks... all the best....

Best current color grading plugin is Color Finale Pro.
Best coming soon is Chromatic.

If this is just for photos, why not edit them in a photo app prior to bringing into FCPX?
I typically use either Photos or Pixelmator to edit my photos, then import into FCPX

Hope this helps, Greg

Clarification: My intention is to color correct VIDEO in FCPX without having to go back and forth to LR.

Don't know Lightroom, but I don't understand what you're doing here. If you're grading video in FCP, why are you going back to Lightroom? Or is the original media inside Lightroom somehow?

Well there are two different scenarios, one is a timelpase (originating in LR) , and the other is exporting to LR so that I can take advantage of some of the controls that, I just personally have a preference towards.....

...for example is there a plugin for FCPX that can do the equivalent of Clarity, vibrance, grain, dehaze, lens correction, etc...

I'm not overly familiar with Lightroom, but as far as I know in most image software most of those are just renamed and/or rigged basic controls.

Clarity = Unsharp Mask
Vibrance = Contrast + Saturation
Grain = dunno what that is, but there is a grain filter in FCPX, and several denoise plugins are available
Dehaze = levels and/or curves, multiple plugins are available

I believe that there are lens correction plugins for FCPX, but I don't know what they are or where to get them.

Hope this helps,
-Mark

rigged? yes, renamed? no.
for instance 'Vibrance', an effect Adobe came up with 10 years (?) ago, is more complex than just plain Saturation:
Saturation rises (or lowers) all pixels color-values equally - up to colour-clipping.
Vibrance uses (automatically) a mask - areas with less colour get a more 'amplification' than already-colourful pixels. And: skin tones are basically kept untouched.

So, to mimic 'Vibrance' as in Photoshop, Affinity, Pixelmator et al is no simple task …

Same with Dehaze - an astonishing effect, Haze gone! - same here: the filter automatically indicates areas of less contrasts, saturation and 'sharpness' (=foggy) and applies according to individual areas.

… but, indeed, there are lots of plugins, filter and LUTs out there doing 'marvel' to video.... there are the ones with -zillions of options, as ColorFinale (=you have to know which knobs to turn), or, the opposite, plugins with very little controls, just have a look at fxfactory, as Lemkesofts Epicolor or Hawaikis Autograder…

I once tried the Tiffen digital filters (~$500). Some were really, really sexy. If I remember correctly, one of them I liked the most was called O-zone. It was exactly what I had been looking for. I "color-grade" my raw stills with AdobeCameraRaw's HSL-sliders. It's a personal preference, it's fast and (for me) intuitive, much more than wheels or curves. As an FCP X plugin, the filters didn't have their own GUI, just a row of sliders in inspector. I should perhaps have tried to "open as a copy in Motion", but unfortunately I didn't think of that then.

So I fully understand your request.

I learned Apple Color, Color Finesse and Resolve (that was #9, with Alexis van Hurkman). I think Resolve is the answer, if the demands are very high. The $90 for this tutorial may turn out to be your best spent $90 ever.

If you just need to color correct your clips, imo the FCP X's Color effect is terribly underestimated. As I see it, it's a very efficient tool. Anything in between the colorboard and Resolve, be it Color Finale, Lumetri or the upcoming Chromatic (judging from the demo) is neither fish nor foul.

If you're working with camera raw image sequences , FCPX is a pain and needs to be improved by treating them as a single clip and allowing for raw controls. Instead of Lightroom, I'd recommend After Effects, which has the same Adobe Camera Raw controls as Photoshop or Lightroom but is better equipped to render out video.

If you're willing to get away from Adobe, then the best overall solution would be Resolve, which is a full strength grading tool. In Resolve 14 Beta, there's included a very nice "dehaze" filter plugin that works great Resolve's toolset is far beyond anything in FCP or Lightroom.

The built-in Color board is more powerful and useful than folks give it credit for, yes. But Color Finale Pro gives you the extra control you need for situations that require surgical fine tuning. I can also tell you first hand the Chromatic will be simply amazing. Very flexible, very well thought out, very powerful set of tools. I'd say it will be a game changer, if the price isn't too high.

I work in both video (NLE) apps and photo (Pixelmator, etc) apps. Different controls for each, yes. But never bothered me. Learn the tools you have at hand, move forward.

There are things we need in video that photographers don't need. Why put a broadcast safe effect in a photo app? Different target outputs, different grading tools. Moving images and still images are perceived differently. I can get similar results to vibrance with other tools (curves especially). Just my personal perspective on the issue.

Chromatic, the future of FCPX color grading standards... IMHO

Ahhh yes!!! Now we're getting in to the jist of it.

Just call me lazy for wanting a vibrance slider, and the like, in FCPX.

Well, according to the FCPX specific instructions, no, you're still using the built-in Color Board, and Logarist simply effects the visual output to your screen. Stacking and adjusting three separate plugins, I dunno, a lot of work, and still no curves, not much offered by a "simulated" output to a computer monitor. There's no added controls to simulate Lightroom controls. It's simply using LUTs to trick the monitor/HDTV output.

A lot of folks seem to like it. Since I use a broadcast monitor, it won't do me any good. Seems to help folks grading on some computer monitors and on HDTVs.

How far along Is Chromatic? Would have liked to have gotten into the beta but Neve heard back. Saw Roger's presentation at NAB and it looked really good.

Chromatic, and I am very limited on what I am allowed to say, is very developed, has some things to enhance/iron out, not much. It should be out sooner rather than later, baring anything blowing up in our faces. Coremelt is on the right track. Shouldn't be too much longer, we hope.
