A course you are right nobody at Apple support knows what they are talking about.
Only thing I can say back in the day Final Cut Pro HD (v4) I have received some good support technical support that is from preventing my G5 crashing... maybe it was different time.
I admit I haven't used Apple support since then but I have meat two nice gentleman at the Amsterdam Supermeet and they knew there stuff in Final Cut Pro X.
But again depends who you have... I had experience where I has show the trainer how to navigate around in OSX and Apple Motion.
While we are the topic BenB what you think could you make to this years Supermeet in Amsterdam?

Well, that's a hell of a plane ticket I'd have to get.

I know this is an old and probably dead thread but I thought I'd share my similar experience. Today I was trying to import a number of files. I'm upwards of 400 right now. Half are AVCHD MTS files that I am importing from camera archives on the hard drive and converting to proxy files. FCPX was not happy and decided to crash a few times often hanging during start up, but I was still able to see that there was nothing showing up on the external FW drive. I went to the external FW drive and tried to access some of the video files. The drive was very unresponsive. I tried to run disc utilities but the drive would not un-mount I tried ejecting, no go. I went through a number of the steps outlined earlier and then I shut down everything turned off the external drives and rebooted. Ran disc utilities checked and repaired permissions verified the boot drive etc.. Then started FCPX, and it started fine without external drives attached. Then booted up the external FW (a new 3TB from Other World Computing and about half full), I verified the disc, no problems found. I then started FCPX and everything now seems to be working and it looks like everything is accounted for that was imported prior to the problems.
Hope this helps. I was running FCPX 10.0.3 and 10.6.8 OS

Phil can't say what the problem in your case could be, just that I have recieved many funky errors and issues copying large and many files to FireWire drive under OSX maybe Final Cut Pro X freaked out the drive or if the drive had some physical problem.
Just make sure the drives hardware is okay before relying your footage to it.

Is there anything other than running disc utilities that can go deeper into possible physical problems?

To be honest, Disk Utility and running Repair Permissions and Repair Disk do basically nothing. Those routines are run as part of so many other operations.
Disk Warrior, run it, repair the drives directly, as it will double check the integrity of all data on the drive, in order to build a new Directory for the drive from scratch. If the drive is going to die, it won't rebuild the directory successfully.

Hi from a new member.
I have been fighting the same apparent issue today and found this thread with a bit of Googling. FCP doesn't show any of the projects or events but they are there on the disk.
I am not sure if the OP's problem is the same as mine but for me it was a DropBox related situation. I use DropBox to share my files between my desktop and laptop. I had created and worked on a few projects on my desktop then decided to put the Movies folder in DropBox ready for a road trip. The accepted way of adding folders to DropBox is to move the folder from its original location to the DropBox folder then make a symbolic link from the moved folder in DropBox to the original folder location.
This generally works without problem. Unfortunately with FCP it doesn't work. FCP will not follow a symbolic link it has to have the real folder. Interestingly Event Manager X still says all is fine and can shuffle the folders around without issue.
The solution if you need to use DropBox is to make the Symlink the other way around, i.e. leave the Movies folder where it is and create a Symlink in the DropBox folder to the original Movies folder.
As I say I don't know if this has any bearing on the OP's problem but it is certainly worth knowing.

First, FCP will not follow a network link, which DropBox is.
Second, if the file is on DropBox, and the SIM is on your local drive, you won't get real time playback over any Internet connection. That's just going to be a major issue there.
If I'm understanding what you did correctly.
DropBox can ONLY be used to move the "CurrentVersion.fcpproject" file around, not to store Event and Project folders. I don't know any NLE that will do this.

Actually it is working absolutely fine. DropBox isn't a network link all the files are on the local hard drive and synchronized to the cloud.
I have simply DropBoxed the entire Movies folder so all projects and events are on each machine. I can now open FCP on any of the computers and they are all identical. I can add events, edit projects and it all works just fine. There is the obvious limitation of how long it takes to synchronies over the connection available but with LAN sync I seem to be able to just swap machines at will. I should add that this does not impact the performance of any feature when using FCP on the computer, it's only how long it takes until the different computers have an identical set of files. My desktop is in the UK at the moment and my laptop in Japan and I can make edits from both systems without a problem (using desktop sharing on the system at home just to try it out)

This is so late but I figured it out and wanted to help if anyone still has the issue.
This happens to me when my external drive comes unplugged during work.
I just started trying random crap and fixed it finally. Aw, guesswork.
In your project and events library (click open package contents to see folders) there's a file called currentversion.flexolibrary. Just delete it.
When you open final cut again, it will recreate that file.
Phew. Just a couple days of my life down the drain.
