Maybe if it was a behavior you could turn off and on? Although, I am always skeptical when it comes to adding more buttons or menu options. One of my favorite things about FCPX is the lack of clutter.
I see what you mean about tracks, but I think it seems like a good compromise between tracks and the magnetic timeline for audio handling.

Just like you I'm not a huge fan of adding more buttons just because everyone wants to have more options that probably only 5% of the total user base ever need. We have had this with FCP7 and now with Premiere, don't want this to happen with FCP X. IMO having audio Roles being displayed as separate lanes for easier visual representation is not such a bad idea, but it's not really a necessity. If implemented correctly, Roles can and should become a very powerful tool.

Yeah, maybe they don't have to gravitate towards each other, but Colour coding is a must! I do like the idea of them being weighted, where certain roles will sink below, and others will float near the top.
And I do like the idea of having audio "nested" but not permanently so, somewhere between a compound clip and a secondary storyline. Sort of like a track stack, but not quite. It's almost like a little "passing lane", where you can apply audio effects to the whole, but not have a comp appear in your browser, also, some how they are still "connected clips".
Are these just more powerful secondary story lines? Would this be similar to a parallel Node? or a Layer Node?
I'm just free balling, so these are all kind of half thoughts.

At one point they changed the behavior but it was global, audio worked great, but video was then opposite of what you'd want. In a perfect world, new connected audio would appear next to the primary, pushing other clips down, and connected video clips would stack as they do now...
EDIT: Actually, from a UI perspective, the easiest thing would be to be able drag the Role panes in the index (like inspector effects ordering) to determine their relative position. This would only affect connected clips. As usual, the difficulty arises with multichannel clips. If you have an audio clips containing both Dialogue and Effects, where does it go? Maybe everything that isn't a single Role goes directly adjacent to the Primary. But what happens if you put audio above the primary? Or video below? It ain't easy to figure out how the logic would work. So, uh.. color coding? But what about the aforementioned multi-role audio clips? do they appear with rainbow stripes?
It ain't a simple proposition no matter what...

I really like the idea of just changing the order of the roles in the timeline index.
I'd also like it if for video, when placed below the primary story line, could be disabled, in the same way you can disable audio components.

If I'm missing something, and there's a workaround, at this point I'm not aware of it.

Otherwise, FCPX makes its own determination as to which monitor it wants to use for a "2nd" monitor. You can't drag the browser window to another display, when the menu item is set for "Browser display on 2nd monitor". A real pita if you're running more than 2 monitors.
How is your Mission Control setup? Have you tried unticking "Displays have separate Spaces"?
