I'm going to buy the Radeon 7950 mentioned above.
I found a few by that name that are very different. One has two fans, one has one. Some are different colors.
Just wanted to make sure I'm getting the one that's right for my Mac Pro.

Here are the ones I've been looking at:

www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Expre...0845PDGSG2A43ZA9YRHT

www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DisplayPort-PCI-...keywords=radeon+7950

www.amazon.com/HIS-Boost-Clock-Graphics-...keywords=radeon+7950

I think there was even a white one which I can't find at the moment.

I purchased the red card for a Mac Pro mid 2010 12 core. It worked but had some issues I believe related to OpenCL so I returned it. Others seem to have used it without problems. See this thread for the specifics including my week of testing the card.

My Mac Pro is a 2009, so maybe it'll be okay.
Thanks.

the 'white' one is the one made for Mac with proper drivers etc..
a bit more expensive but after reading way to much about how to flash the other 'pc' ones
I didn't think it was worth the hassle (unless you're a pc type).

Colors change periodically. I purchased the red Mac Edition one from OWC that required no drivers other than what Yosemite natively supplied. I just checked now and the exact same card and specs is indeed white on OWC site. But it wasn't a couple months ago. And - I agree I wouldn't bother with flashing a PC version. Too many potential issues.

Sorry, I was incorrect. I just pulled up a picture I took of the 7950 Mac Edition I bought and returned and it is White. I must be going color blind :(

NealF... remember to get a SSD too... that speed up the whole system a ton!

And I think I read that the latest Yosemite.. or was it the next OS update El Captain -
will work with ANY SSD... which is great news.

So, if I got this correct, the white one is more expensive but I won't have to do anything nerdy. And that one will probably work with my 2009 Mac Pro.
If that's the case, that's my choice.

SSD drives are next. I have my main system drive and another internal where I put the work files. If I can only do one at a time does it make much difference which to do first?

The white one says 'Mac Edition' on the box.
There's only 1 model from 1 company who makes it.
Here's one... though it was 450 when I bought it.
eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ntk...7418&Ntt=video+cards

Another issue is that ATI makes newer models then this now... and I believe Apple uses them in newer iMacs & maybe the new low end MacPro .. Sooooo, you probably need to investigate if there's a model that would work for your machine.. and they'd be cheaper too.. But if time and hassle is an issue for you then you can't go wrong with the 7950 .. sorry, but that's the story.

SSD..
You only need one 512 unit as the system disc really.
It speeds everything up a ton! (especially since the OS is caching all the time.)
