Audio monitoring BUG
I'm doing VO recording and such, and have no playback issues.

Thanks for that clue. I have some info:
Anyone having the audio problem, try this simple test.
1) With the clip selected in the browser, look at Audio in inspector. The default should be at stereo and there is a L & R audio meter This normally plays just fine when in playing from the browser, at least on my system.
2) Now switch to dual mono. As BenB mentioned and we have seen, you will see one single mono column in the audio meter. When I play that clip from the browser, I don't have sound.
3) Now set the pan mode to stereo left right. The meters now have two columns AND the audio now plays! (Again on my system)
4) Next set the Pan mode to "None". The sound will still play, I still have a L/R audio meter, even though I am in dual mono.
So maybe something is wigged out, but at least I can monkey around and get things to how I'm accustomed.
Let me know what you guys find.
Jonathan

I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me.
This is the response I got from Apple,
Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
3. Select the Configure Speakers option
4. Select the Multichannel tab
5. Change the setting to Stereo
Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.
Check, works for me. Thanks.

Just wanted to add that this was happening for me on my system- mono audio clips not playing in the browser with the timeline playing audio fine. It was also losing audio in compound clips when I opened them in the timeline. Wonky routing for mono...
The fixed worked for me too. Thank you!
My system is a 2011 Mac Mini with a USB audio interface running apple's generic USB audio drivers. No problems before 10.2. Definitely seems to be a bug in the routing of FCP X. Thanks again for the work around...

There is some logic to it really. AJA and BlackMagic IO devices have multiple outputs (if only through SDI and HDMI), so the NLE could address those outputs in case of multichannel audio. Like 8 channel XDCAM source clips.
The weird thing is the Audio Midi setup setting that messes up. No idea how that can happen. Source clips with stereo channels are being put through the Stereo tab, so no problems there.
