FCPX 10.2 enables QuickTime 7 Pro?

On an OSX 10.10.3 with the new FCPX 10.2 I just noticed that Quicktime 7 now seems to have Quicktime 7 Pro features. This machine has been untouched by FCP Studio legacy.

I don't see anything different with QT 7 on my Mac Pro. It also has never had FCP 7 on it. The QT7 pro features are listed but default is grayed out (not sure why I have it on here, actually).

They were previously grayed out. They aren't now. There's nothing I can think of that would have changed that short of 10.10.3 and FCPX 10.2.

I now have Show Movie Properties whereas that was a grayed out Pro option before.

Confirming I go to QuickTime>Registration, even though nothing is filled in I now see PRO over the Q and it says on the bottom of the windows it says Apple Pro Apps User.

Definitely changed for me.

Perhaps grandfathered previous installs only.
This is a MacPro Tube purchased early 2014.

Not for me. Quicktime 7 has been installed for ever on this machine. But it didn't change to pro with the upgrade.

Truly odd. There's nothing on this computer that would have activated it. It just suddenly became Pro after updating to FCPX 10.2.

A real head scratcher.

Nothing in the latest updates touches QT Player at all. I can state that for sure.

Truly science fiction for me.
Quicktime Pro enabled through no conscious action by me (or Apple apparently) on a system that never had Legacy on it. This system was a clean system from the get go last year. When I last used QT7 a few days ago it was still standard. Today I checked a clip in it after updating to 10.2 and noticed the grayed out pro features were enabled. Baffling. I have no reason to complain about this magical change of course. Perhaps some sort of easter egg?

I think possibly one of the Yosemite updates was responsible for this. Definitely not FCPX 10.2 because I noticed this a while back on our systems, possibly even before 10.10.3 OS.

Yet I'm pretty sure it was not "Pro" in OS 10.10.2.

I can't help but think there's some "easter egg" that results in QT 7 Pro being activated. Some combination of Yosemite, FCPX and some unknown action or series of keystrokes.

Today the Pro activation went away.

It has to be a Easter Egg of some sort that's time limited. Cant' think of any rational reason for it to suddenly activate and then deactivate some time later.

Why does it activate for some, but not everyone with the same updates?

It is still active for me today, and now that I think of it, I believe it has always been the pro version on my system ever since installing it. I have always been able to use the pro only functions, movie annotations, and such since installing it over 3 years ago. Now I do also have DVD SP active and working on my system, so maybe there is a correlation, but it always says Apple Pro Apps user when checking the registration.

Do you have Compressor??

Becuase I think what must be one of the biggest kept secrets is the Compressor is effectively the new QuickTime Pro. It enables all the features that was available for tthe old QuickTime Pro, but via its interface.

I have t checked QuickTime myself, but perhaps this MAY my solve your mystery.

I don't think Compressor has anything directly to do with QT 7 Pro activation.
If you have any FCP Legacy programs, I suspect that it activates.

In my case my computer was untouched by legacy.
Also in my case it activated and has become deactivated within a span of a couple of days.
This is why I'm inclined to believe there's an Easter Egg routine that I must have bumped into.
The only potential correlates is that it happened around the same time as the update to 10.10.3 and 10.2 although that could be entirely coincidental.

As an encoder there's no great need for QT 7 Pro which otherwise would cost about $30 (Free with legacy Pro Apps) given Compressor does a lot more for $50. QT 7 Pro does have useful features as a Player and File Inspector though.

Compressor is not the "new QT Pro". The two have always existed side by side, and Compressor is not a playback application like QT 7 Player was/is. We will have to see if the "new" QT X Player will inherit the transcoding features or not.

Also, if you "installed" QT 7, you installed the Pro version. The non-pro version came with Macs prior to QT X. And if you got a newer Mac with QT X player on it, you could only "install" the QT 7 Pro version from Apple. There is no non-pro version installer. So I have to conclude you did indeed download and install the pro version from the start.

Ben, based on my experience, I'll have to disagree. QT 7 is non pro on two of my systems that have never touched legacy but have FCPX installed. It is Pro only on my two Legacy system.
