This is a phantastic thread, profound advice from the 'pros', nobody's patronizing ... fcp.co at its best!

1 TB is nice2have, but do you need 1TB on a "the sole function of a raid setup would be for editing not storage" … ?
This weekend's yield in my lil' habitat: ~80-90GBs. If you don't optimize, even a tiny 128Gigs SSD would fit. And you get such an ext.SSD/usb3 starting at <80€ ... ; and a ext.Samsung SSD 250GB for ~170€.
Actual offer at amazon.de : WD My Passport Pro 2 TB 'used' = 210€ - Amazon calls this 'warehouse deals', I'm a huge fan of that: all the remittees amazon gets, have to be called 'used' => lots of bargains ... got my Lumix for 660, instead of 780€ ... yes the box was open, but device in 'mint condition' ...
I know, those wishlists explodes, you instantly lose track …
tl;dr :
if the fast drive is meant only as a working horse, maybe a 250GB drive is 'big enough. Then: ~180€ (usb3) or 250€ (tb) .... both bus powered.
(sorry for prices in €, I'm too lazy to calculate; early morning here, 1st coffee's haven't reached grey matter yet)

so that got me a 2tb raid set up for $79
but im still keen on the evo but cant make 500 clams vanish prior to a family holiday  (without being caught)
as for size im not sure
bring back an unknown amount of gopro footage from the forementioned family holiday, i was hoping to do a 60 to 90 min long edit
not for youtube but for memories :woohoo:
i currently have a 5 min hockey video that i didnt optimise and it has about 200 gig of render files (that i will delete) but they are needed during editing
the footage is 1080 at 120 fps as some of those hockey moments make for good slo mo

i loaded up a library that was running poorly when on one toshiba casio 1tb
gave it a few minutes to populate the timeline and render a few things and it ran perfectly smooth
its fantastic :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
but having watched 2 hours of youtube evo ssd reviews today i think ill go that route later in the year, one overtime shift should cover it
hmm 2 x ssd evo 500gb raid0 or 1 x ssd evo 1tb or 2 x ssd evo 1tb raid0  ??????????
then the toshi's can be used for storage
i have also just realised i have a desktop with 2 500gig drives in it that no one uses anymore that i could pull apart
someone said i could set it up as a nas if i knew what i was doing (but i dont) so i havnt

decisions, decisions …
imho, for 'single source'-editing, a tb-connect SSD is 'best' = speed, reliability, no extra wires/boxes
Here, for my needs (MultiCam) I would prefer several drives.
Except my 4k material ... this weekend first time 'for real' in use = ~70min = 50gigs material just from 1 camera <gulp!>
low budget, sky high ambitions .... that's me!
just curious: you record everything only with a GoPro?? Isn't that a bit … weird (<< sorry, English is not my tongue, cannot find a better word) ? No long lens, no shallow focus, no 'normal' perspective, everything in 170°… ?

which i can get for $528....
Yes I have that one in my Windows machine -- it is extremely fast. If you only need 1TB, it is much faster than any affordable mechanical external drive.
You'd need a USB-to-SATA or Thunderbolt-to-SATA interface for the drive. Also it's a bare drive. It is not really intended to sit unprotected.
OWC has this $69 enclosure but it's Firewire/USB only: eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20...dHMg1kwSIaAtLo8P8HAQ
Here's a USB3-to-SATA docking station for $23: www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Lay-Flat...0A0WK0NZ9YBSAZ2VG2DX
Transcend has this entire 1TB USB3 drive for $440. It is somewhat slow for SSD (480/380 MB/sec), but that's still way faster than a mechanical drive. It's small and rugged: www.amazon.com/Transcend-External-Solid-...0K5PGGPBMJDCCCW39MBM

…Nothing weird about using them at all. …
Ben, I'm living in Old Europe, indeed, but that doesn't mean, I'm living behind the moon (as we phrase it) I know what GoPros are, and what you can accomplish with it ...
One of the rare 'abos' I have at YT is the GoPro chanel ... awesome pictures. No doubt.
I never mentioned, using a GoPro is weird.
What I tried to express is: It is a bit beyond my imagination, to record a whole family vacation with a GoPro only. I know they offer some settings, not only 170°, but for example 'free hand' with such a tiny thingie without stabilizer ... hmm?
… you can really not hide you're a teacher!!
Appreciate you lesson, been there before ...

I'm just stating a fact of life, many of us do this, it isn't unusual in any way.

If fact weird is pretty tame compared to some other words we use in normal freindly conversation.
the only thing im not liking about thunderbolt is thunderbolt = + $100 with no benefit.
usb3 and thunderbolt are basically the same speed the only difference is + $100 (fair comment ?)
you can buy usb3 enclousures that are a perfect fit for the evo 850 and they cost like $15
havnt found any thunderbolt enclosure for the evo850
the usb3 enclosure is plug and play, no welding required. (the one i looked at anyway)

BenB wrote: I'd like to see a USB 3.0 RAID come close to my P2 16TB RAID. No, USB and T'bolt are not the same, sorry, I can't go along with that statement.
ok not looking to start a format war
but i went into a major apple store a few days ago to purchase a lacie and was told that usb3 and thunderbolt were the same speed, he then suggested after i explained the issue i was having to purchase a usb3 7200 portable hard drive and as such this wonderful thread began. :woohoo:

It also surprises me how some people make it into the Apple Store after reading and hearing how Apple does there hiring.
