It turns out there is no cost to create and publish a Roku private channel. This must be hosted elsewhere (e.g, Vimeo Pro) but your viewers could access it with a private code you'd provide. There is also a monetization option although I haven't investigated that.

So by using only Vimeo Pro and a Roku private channel, you could cover all computer and mobile playback devices plus the "Living room TV" scenario. www.roku.com/developer

I don't mean to hijack the thread from DVD assistance, but this is a logically related topic, esp considering prevailing trends.

It depends on what you do how viable physical media is. If you just do boring promotional stuff (and it seems like many here do) then yeah there's no need for DVDs or really any kind of physical media any more. Stuff like soccer games with the kids and plays can be distributed to friends and family members via DVD. Grandma isn't gonna figure out how to stream it, after all. But that's not really a "market" so I digress.

As for me and my peers, physical media is an EXTREMELY viable option. And an extremely profitable one. One of my friends has a Youtube show and he did an Indiegogo asking for funds to help him press the first season to DVD. BAM over $60,000 in a very fast manner. Next year he did the same thing for season 2 (keep in mind these are only 10 episodes per season) and BAM over $60,000 again no prob. This is in addition to the revenue he makes on the show which can be seen for free. People WANT physical media even for stuff they can watch for free. It's really amazing. My friend only has 60,000 subscribers. I have a lot more than that and people ask us all the time for physical media even though they can watch the show for free. I've been putting it off because I want to do a Blu-ray but the Apple / Mac OSX platform is just not capable of doing what I want. I can't make that kind of money using what's offered on OSX. I can do DVD but I'm thinking I want a combo set. Fortunately I've partnered with someone and we can get our first set out this year. It's a lot of authoring doing stuff that can't be done via streaming media, like a choose-your-own-adventure video where you select how the video progresses via a menu. Easy-as-pie to do on DVD and Blu-ray. Hard as hell on a thumb drive.

PS - Vimeo Pro is horrible. Do not recommend! Stick with Youtube. So much more versatile.
