I always recommend to my students to once a day: backup your data.
Once a week: verify 10-15% free space on all drive, and repair all drives with Disk Utility.
Once a month: repair the directories on all drives with Disk Warrior.

From what I know, FCPX won't write out to a FAT flavored drive.

I wish there were more teachers like you Ben. So many people I have worked with who are 'professionals' don't bother with such important tasks, yet they get the oil changed in their car more often.

I read that after 10.1 the libraries could be on an exFAT drive, but as I said earlier, I am against it. I had a doc I had to fix that came to me on an exFAT formatted drive around the 10.0.3 days, it opened, but it was a big mess.

You reminded me as to why I think internal hard drives should need extra steps to unlock the last 25% on most people's internal HD. So many people think "that's how much stuff I can pile in there!"

Ugh.

Update: Another day working off the library with it on a different drive, not a single clip disappeared. So, it most certainly is looking like the drive. I've a full backup of it planned for tonight and I've purchased Disk Warrior so I'll run all the repairs on it tomorrow and on my system drive as both are being flagged up in Disk Warrior as needing attention.

I've seen it.

after duplicating sequence, SOME connected clips weren't there., some empty, connected storylines and lonely dissolves sitting in them.

weird. no pattern. no logic to it.

I reported it and sent info.

I had this problem a lot about a year ago and still have it occasionally: happily working along on one part of a complicated timeline, then zoom out to go back to an earlier section and voilá, a whole bunch of clips are gone - usually a connected storyline has all the content gone leaving behind the telltale dissolves where the clips used to be.

I figured it was something I was doing wrong, so I started watching like a hawk and found out that it happens when I delete a clip where I'm working. Undo, undo, undo, until I get everything back, and then zoom out to see the whole timeline. Then redo, redo, redo until the clip I originally wanted to kill is highlighted, then Delete and watch the whole batch of clips disappear.

Workaround: when I want to delete a clip I zoom out, deselect everything, select the one clip I want to kill, then scrutinize the timeline to see if anything changes when I press delete. Usually nothing happens. But about one in 10 times, a bunch of clips disappear, and I have to go back and undo.

I still think I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is. Too many dissolves? not using "Lift from Storyline" enough? Somehow it seems that clips I don't want to get deleted are being selected when I don't want them to be selected.

Can you try to write this out as some steps to repeat to make this happen? I'm not totally following you.
