Wow Ronny; killer response. I'm going to have to let it all sink in for a bit....after I finish my current project (which thankfully is going well after the update!).

Thanks again; this was super well explained and detailed.

Okay, so I'm finally starting to implement Ronny's excellent plan and I've encountered a bizarre issue where all my compound clips are being duplicated.

After I did my initial media upgrade; the structure that FC created was to make a separate event called "Updated Projects" that had all of my projects in it, and one event for each of my previous version events (I think this is the typical result when upgrading). So now, to start implementing Ronny's plan the first thing I did was to move each project out of "Upgraded Projects" and into its proper corresponding event (So for example Game 1 Project now goes into Game 1 Event, Game 2 into Game 2, etc). The problem that arose when I did this, however, was that any compound clips that were in a given Game's event become duplicated. When I try to delete the duplicate it says that FC cannot delete compound clips that are in use, but the duplicate (denoted MonsterPartyIntroClip 1 in the attached graphic) is not actually in use anywhere. It is also worth noting that a duplicate is created for each project added (so for example Game 3 had two projects, and when I added them to Game 3 Event it created two duplicates of each compound clip).

Does anyone have an idea what is going on and/or how to force the removal of these erroneous duplicates? I know that they do not take up file size (since they are just really "wrappers"), but its adding a lot of unnecessary clutter and its frustrating to look at as well ;)

Thanks!

Hmm; I've still haven't figured out how to delete this duplicates or find out someway to have FC tell me where it thinks they are "in use"; any help would be much appreciated.

Also, I think I've realized another potential problem with the setup discussed above. Assume that I currently have every game separated into its own Library, so that I can only open the needed ones at a given time and reduce memory usage. One of these libraries would be my "Outtakes", which contains a Project timeline in which I've been placing outtakes from all my projects as I've been working over the past few years.. Because of this, the Outtakes Event will have compound clips and clips from all the projects I've been working on. Now, since I always want my Outtakes library open and ready to drop in new stuff, and since the Outtakes event references all this media (even if its only symlinks), won't this mean that I am effectively keeping all clips from all the games in memory at all times, thus nullifying the expected savings of having everything be in separate libraries?

If so am I just stuck with having everything in one growing library and hoping that in the future they add some sort of "hide" events feature? Also, is there no way to have the Outtake event only reference / separate out the small 10 second chunks of content from the other events without having to reference it all? (Note: this could also be addressed in another way if it is possible to "Export In Place" the outtakes - see this thread: www.fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/...io-s-bounce-in-place ).

Note that the "Outtakes" above was just one example, I have a couple of such "Meta" projects like this.

Thanks a lot!

Does anyone have an ideas based on my above comments?

If there are no workarounds for my situation, i suppose I could, after working on each game do the following:

1. Export (at highest possible quality) all little chunks of game footage use in my intro clip project (which I use to edit versions of my 30 second intro) and reimport them into the Intro clip project; thus breaking the need for intro clip to reference all the other media in many games

2. In my intro video project, I could export the full 30 second video at the highest quality I can, and then import this into my current Game Event, thus severing the inter-event ties.

3. Do a similar thing for the outtakes

I know there is a possibility of some loss, but I think since it is only one or two export/imports, if I use a high quality export setting it should be unnoticeable I think.

4. Once all events are free from all ties of other events media I could then effectively "hide" some of the events by going into the package and moving the events to some outside folder, and drop them back in to the package when necessary. The reason why I'd want to do this rather than making everything into its own separate library is that while I am working on a given game, it would be beneficial to have that Game Event live in the same Library as the Outtakes event, and the Intro video event, and perhaps maybe the previous game Event as I might use some footage of that.

Sorry for the long posts - but does this seem like a viable workaround if the above plans are not possible due to the issues I mentioned?

Thanks for taking the time to read this; I'm just really struggling trying to find a way to make 10.1 media management jive with the particular workflow my episode series requires, and a sanity check or two would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

Make a Library for each episode, and keep them all in the same folder in the Finder.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply. What exactly does having two libraries being in the same folder in finder (in my case they'd both be in the root of my external drive) gain you over having the two libraries in more distant locations? It was my understanding that, in order to avoid media copying between events they had to live in the same library (hence my plan in step "4" above); is there more to the story here?

Thanks!

Nope, just a suggestion. I'm hoping we get folders in the Library that we can collect Events in, eventually.

Okay; I'll try going with my "move events" solution. I tested it with a few of my events and it seems like it will work - FCP still lists the event name, but all the data will be gone until I move the folder back into the bundle.

Not 100% ideal, but this should keep me from loading unwanted assets while still keeping the benefits of one library.
