Just thought I'd post an update to my use of the AMD Radeon HD 7970 3072MB. Still very powerful but recently noticed random flickerong on both of my Dell E198FP monitors. Comes and goes, about every 20 minutes. Hoping this new card isn't a lemon and dying on me already. No help form the AMD forums or tech support. Other than that FCPX is happy and using it.

Hey everyone. Has anyone installed two graphics cards in their mid 2010 tower or similar model and has FCPX successfully utilized both of them regardless of brand and model? I"m curious. Thinking of installing my ATI 5770 with my AGP 5770 and see what happens. Gotta find a power splitter off of the DVD drive to power the ATI though.

The two have to be identical cards for OS X and FCPX to used them together like that. There is a whole thread here about folks doing this very thing. I can't find it at the moment, but perhaps someone will post a link to it.

Graphic Card Gurus. Need your help again! So, I've posted on the success of my AMD Radeon HD 7970. Unfortunately, after 90 days of course, it began to fail. Long story short the eBay company selling them as new was selling them as refurbished cards. Got burned! So I have been using my 2.8Gzh Quad Core Xeon Mid 2010 Tower as a test subject. I still have my old ATI Radeon 5770 and many have urged to not mix graphics cards but while my ATI has been sitting on the side, I've continued using the AMD RAdeon HD 7970, despite it causing reboots and flickering, and adding in a Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 512MB. If I run the monitor connections from the Nvidia while the AMD 7970 is present, FCPX & the Mac runs very smoothly. Not having any flickering, crashes or reboots. Rendering is still very fast. Now, prior to using the Nvidia Quadro 1700 I used a Quadro 1500. Very loud and caused a lot of spinning rainbow wheels. If I connect monitors to the 7970 the system will crash and reboot and of course flicker. If I connect the monitors to the Nvidia Quadro 1700, none of that happens. My question; Is FCPX using both the cards or really just using the 7970 and ignoring the Quadro? And since I have the ATI 5770 1GB does anyone think I can get away with conflicts and crashes with the 7970 since the Nvidia Quadro works? Also, if you are experimenting with various graphic cards for FCPX, I'd like to read your results. Please post. Finally, are there any disastrous downsides in terms of power? For the ATI 5770 I need a power splitter to run off the DVD-ROM. Please alert me to any threats to health or my machine when it comes to splitting the power. Reason is that the AMD 7970 takes up both graphics power connections in the Mac Pro. Thanks
