What does it matter if their primary job isn't video editing? They're still getting paid for the work they do, even if video is only one deliverable in a total project.
As a video editor, I need a host of other applications tangental to my job in audio, illustration, web, animation... they're all part and parcel of the job. If I had to buy everything I use fresh today, it would probably cost me about $1500-$2000. That's less than 1 week's worth of wages, out of a 52 week working year.
But by my reckoning if video is that small a part of their job, then either they could be using a cheaper tool (like iMove) or just don't bother upgrading until you can justifying the purchase.
I don't like Adobe's new subscription model, but there's no way I can say that it's not justifiable in relation to how much I make off that software.

The only matter is who gets to decide what you spend for what.

It should certainly be easier than even a few years ago, when upgrades were $500-$1000.
What could the upgrade price be? $99?
There's no chance of upgrade pricing now until this time next year, because if it was going to happen it would have been announced for the developers at WWDC.

To me Logic Pro X looks great for musicians but not really for me, so I feel this version signals that the next version of Final Cut Pro is going to be an "All-in-One" more audio features coming, more Motion features coming.
Will be interesting to see.

It's a very tricky grey area. In the higher end audio is almost exclusively someone else's job and will be going to a DAW.
That being the case, it's obviously not in Apple's interest to try to achieve DAW-level functionality into an NLE. But that threshold for where "how much is enough" isn't going to be the same for any sample of editors. There'll always be someone to say, "if it only had this or that..." I wouldn't have to go to another app, but try to integrate too much and it will bog the app down.
Very excited to see what's coming. New MacPro, new OS enhancements, and theoretically a BIG FCPX update.

Alex4D has written a great article on this subject. If even half of what he points out is coming down the pipe I'll be thrilled.

Great stuff!
And remember you can use iTunes Gift cards in the App Store.
They are always on sale at places like this: www.giftcardsonsale.com.au
So with a 20% saving Logic Pro X goes from $209.99 to $167.99 here in Aus. Not bad!

Logic 10.0.1 is out:
This update improves overall stability and performance issues, including:
• Fixes an issue that could cause content downloading to stall
• 24-bit audio files are no longer converted to 16-bit when exporting projects to AAF
• Improves stability when switching between audio editors while Flex Pitch is enabled
• Track Stacks that contain both software instrument and audio tracks will no longer be inadvertently flattened by loading a Patch
• Tuner is now available when selecting a Track Stack containing audio tracks
• Addresses graphic and selection behaviour issues in the Score Editor
This release is recommended for all Logic Pro X customers.
